I don’t know if someone has mentioned it already but the reason why toothless can sometimes fly on his own is because Hiccup adjust the tail to stay still so it allows him to glide basically, but Hiccup is not there to change the settings pf the tail so it’s hard for toothless to maneuver on his own, and when Hiccup was taken from Toothless back unexpectedly he didn’t set the mechanism of the tail and it just started to flop. That’s why toothless fell. (Engineering student here, We actually studied this scene in my applied mechanics class 😅)

One of the hardest moments to watch or emotional ones is when hiccup pushes toothless away after he fired on stoic, knowing that it wasn't this fault, but he was still hurt by it and he was just acting out his pure emotions.

This franchise really hooked me with the fact that they weren't afraid to show consequences to a younger audience. Hiccup losing his leg from a dangerous battle instead of surviving unscathed. The reality of death and howbit can just happen without the dying breath speeches of most films growing displayed. The emotion of Stoic finding the love of his life is alive and the quick instinct to protect his son at all cost still make my eyes well up. Such a great film

The thing I love most about Astrid is that once Hiccup finally won her over, she gave him full, unwavering support and loyalty. She would challenge him, but only to help him make sure he was making the best possible choices. Every man wants a wpman like that, with that kind of support.

I just always loved how even though this series is animated, fantastical, and very much coming of age/self-discovery themed, it still deals with real loss and consequences. In the first film Hiccup loses a leg and then the Ice Alpha and Stoic dying. The story and stakes feel very real and grounded. It allows for very complex emotional moments like Hiccup pushing away Toothless in anger because he's so grief stricken. It also allows for the victories to feel just that much sweeter and satisfying! The animation and premise are truly top tier, but it's the mature storytelling that really elevate these *animated* films to a whole other level. To where people can say they're some of their favorite films period! not just animated. I feel like I could literally write an essay on how good they are!

Something to consider regarding the position of village chief is that Stoick didn't necessarily want to be chief when he was young either. Remember the conversation he had with Gobber near the beginning of the first movie... "Even as a boy I knew what I was, what I had to become. Hiccup is not that boy." Stoick knew that as the son of the chief he would become chief himself one day. As a young boy Stoick accepted the fact that he *had to* shoulder that burden and responsibility despite possibly wanting something different for himself. That's a big part of the reason as to why Stoick is disappointed in Hiccup at the start of the first movie. Hiccup had established a pattern of irresponsible behavior where he'd go out to fight Dragons despite being woefully underqualified to do so, thereby endangering himself and others, and causing damage to the village. We understand that he did this because he wanted to belong and to make Stoick proud, but the reasons he himself gave for doing it was that he thought dragon-fighting was cool and because he wanted to get a girlfriend, both of which came off as selfish and careless. By the end of the first movie he proved to Stoick that he really was looking out for the good of the entire village, and Stoick has come to see the true potential Hiccup has as a leader and protector. The problem is that Hiccup doesn't see those things in himself. He doesn't think he can even begin to measure up to his dad, simply because of how great and legendary a man Stoick is, and he's scared of the responsibility. Only after Stoick's sacrifice does Hiccup truly realize that becoming chief isn't about whether he wants the job or not, it's about love and self-sacrifice. As far as the father-son relationship goes the first movie is about Stoick understanding Hiccup, and the second movie is about Hiccup understanding Stoick.

Stoic is one of my favorite animated dads, he's this very masculine and stoic (ha) man, but has a tender side when he's around his wife. He isn't even angry when he sees her because of the implications that she chose not to come back he's just too happy to see her to care. As the great optimus prime Peter Cullen's Brother one said, a true hero is stong enough to be gentle

I think the difference between a lot of sequels and this one (or the LOTR one that you mentioned, after all) is that this was always meant to be a trilogy. They didn't just give it to the audience because they'd loved the first one, like you mentioned, after all, but they had it planned already ;) Btw. my husband and I had a HTTYD themed wedding :) We had wedding invitations which my cousin had designed with two dragons with the tagline "...because without each other, we can't fly", little gingerbread dragons at each seat at the reception with the names of the guests so they'd know the seating order (they could also keep the little dragons as tiny gifts). And my husband walked down thea isle to the melody of Forbidden Friendship (the one from the first film where Hiccup and Toothless are first getting to know each other) and I walked down the aisle to the melody of "Romantic Flight" (when Hiccup takes Astrid on her first dragon ride).

As you said, Stoic is one of the best characters because you know exactly where he's coming from/ his dislike for the dragons before we learn his personal agenda for not liking the dragons. - To becoming a dragon rider himself and then when he finally reunites with his lost wife, he has nothing but love for her no hatred, no bargaining, no questions of why she had not return - to just acceptance & embrace.

I don't know if this is worth it for you guys, I'm sure you have a full schedule, but if you enjoy the HTTYD's movies - I Highly recommend checking out the show; Race to the edge. It is such an amazing show even if it is made for kids. I laughed my butt off multiple times, Lots of lessons to learn and entertaining story with many dragons. Edit: Someone made a very good point that this show as great as it is, It is targeted for children and might not be worthy of A series on the channel and that's fine. I still recommend watching it maybe on their own time.

  • @jackgilchrist

The series is good and fun, but definitely a lot sillier, and like you said, geared more toward children. Tuffnut and Ruffnut can be hilarious, but their act does get a little tired after a while. I find Snotlout extremely annoying. I never really liked him in the series (and his dragon didn't seem to like him much either, lol). Snotlout, Ruff and Tuff and Fishlegs don't seem to have a whole lot of character growth through the series, either, from what I remember (it's been a few years since I watched it). But I suppose that's ok for characters in a children's show. It doesn't really need to be that complex. It also seems to me that later in the series they started running out of good story arcs, and I kind of lost interest. That's a common issue with popular series, they tend to run longer than they probably should. If a person is an animation fan and loved the movies (and who doesn't?), the series is definitely worth checking out. But the movies are better by miles in my opinion, at least for adults and older kids. In fact the movies might be a little much for young children, and probably should be watched with parents, whereas you could turn on the series for the kids and leave them to it. That's my take, anyway, others may have a different one.

@jackgilchrist You made lots of valid points and I totally see where you're coming from, I honestly don't have many disagreements - All I can really say is all these annoying characters might have not come across as annoying to me, Sure there are moments that have me roll my eyes, but I generally like all of their moments of friendship, support & caring, I also have laughed more times from this kid show than I have at comedy made for adults - like you said, there might not need to be much development because It is for kids. I also think its made to be like the old classic days of villain of the week or case of the week, that its them just usually going off in their little Mini adventures with the only progression possibly happening is Hiccup & Astrid (which BTW It's one of the best examples of a healthy relationship I've seen in all forms of media. & I absolutely love them.)

Eret, Son Of Eret is my favorite character, out of the whole franchise. Why? Because of four moments: two in HTTYD2 and two in Hidden World. The two in HTTYD2 were when he thanks Stormfly for saving him, and the other is when he shoots an arrow with the others, respecting a chief that was never his. In Hidden World, although, unfortunately, we didn’t see as much of this guy as I would have liked (ex. have a spin-off series about Eret, or at least have a series between the second and third movies, with a few (at the very least) Eret-centric episodes), but my favorite moments of Eret’s are 1) when he tells Hiccup and Astrid (or, as the fandom calls them, Hiccstrid) about Grimmel, and 2) when he’s among Valka and Gobber when he comes in to assist the rest of the main cast fight the bad guys. And Eret is also my favorite character because he has saved me from myself time and time again.

You should watch the series Dragons: Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge, they dive deeper into what happened on that 5 year gap between the first film and this. They expand on Hiccup and Astrid's relationship, Hiccup and his dad, as well as flesh out the rest of the gang, and how Berk adapted to living with dragons. You should also watch the Gift of the Night Fury holiday special because the events of that are referenced in the next film.

This is propably my favourite movie off all time, i love this franchise so much, best part of my childhood, but i would highly recommend watching the series, dragons: riders of berk, defenders of berk and Race to the edge, you will find out what happened in the five years between the first and second movies, many thing will be explained about how they actually started, you will see many new amazing characters, very well made villains, many cute moments between Hiccup and Astrid, and some characters will be shown from a much better angle than in the movies, the bond they have in the series that we don't see in the movies is amazing (they all love and care for each other), the story is beautiful, plus you may understand why he tried to talk do Drago. The series is divided into 2 parts, the first one consists of 2 seasons of dragons riders and defenders of berk and the events happen after the first movie, the second part consists of 6 seasons and the events happen a year/2 years before HTTYD 2 The series is truly worth watching and I say this as a fan who discovered this franchise over 11 years ago and immediately fell in love with it, you should definitely check it out

The short version of what I’m trying to say: TL;DR: The first tv show in this franchise (Riders/Defenders Of Berk to Race To The Edge) as well as all the short films are really good and I would really like it if you would react to them or at least watch it on your own time if you’re not gonna react to it on camera. I would really like to see more creators reacting to this show. The long version: This franchise has 3 movies and 3 different tv series’s as well as 2 Christmas themed short films, two non-Christmas short films and one short film that basically looks like a tv show episode. And while the two newer tv series’s are trash I would (depending on how much you enjoyed the movie/s) „highly“ recommend you to check all of the 5 seasons of the original tv series (Dragons: Riders Of Berk Season 1, Dragons: Defenders Of Berk Season 2 and Dragons: Race To The Edge Season 3 to 5 (RTTE has it’s own season count of season 1 to 6 since it’s much bigger than riders and defenders.)) as well as the short films preferably (for us) on KZread and/or Patreön but if you don’t want to at least alone off cam because even though there isn’t that many people who watched the tv show after the movie/s it’s really good! Though my guess to why so many people never watched it is probably because they think it’s for children and for children only even though it’s for about the same audience as the movies. In my personal opinion I would rank Dragons: Race To The Edge at about the same height as the first movie if not even higher and then Defenders, then Riders, then the first Christmas short film, than the sequel and then the other short films and then the threequel. Though opinions may differ. Also RTTE really picks up after season 1 of RTTE. And Dragons: Rescue Riders is a kids show and Dragons: The Nine Realms is so bad that you can’t even tell who the intended audience is because unless you’re a braindead 4 year old you’ll probably stop watching after the first episode because of how poorly written, designed and animated everything is. I think almost everyone ranks Rescue Riders and 9 Realms at the bottom of their tier list. Though I personally would really REALLY like seeing more people reacting to at least D:RTTE if nothing else since there is so many reactions to the movies but so little reactions to the tv series. Of course each individual episode isn’t as high quality as the movies because obviously they needed to pump out more episodes in a shorter amount of time compared to the movies where they had more time to produce an over an hour long movie. But the story, plot, narrative, characters and music are all still really good in the tv series. Also Fishlegs, Sir Snotsalot and The Nuts are all relevant main characters in the series. You also learn how the All the vikings learn to integrate dragons into their society and how for example Hiccup gets is flight suit or his flame sword. The only thing that tanked more heavily is the quality of the visuals but it gets much better in RTTE and it’s never so bad you can’t watch it. The visuals are still good for a tv show (from what I’ve heard, I haven’t really watched any other 3d animated tv series in my life so I wouldn’t know), especially in Race To The Edge. It’s just much much worse compared to the movies. The tv show has over 100 episodes that are all over 20 minutes long. Also the show has really good villains and they get better every time they introduce a new one. And the villains from the show are much much better than the ones in the movies. In summary, The movies have beautiful animations and scenery while the tv shows have much better character writing and world building. I probably will or already have reused this comment under other newer HTTYD reactions in hopes of getting someone to start a reaction series for the Dragons tv series wich is why I put so much effort into writing it. Also I don’t know how to make this comment shorter while still being able to make my point. I would enjoy you (or anyone) reacting to the tv series but if ya don’t then that’s your choice. I can’t blame you. I can only give it my best shot to convince you or anyone who’s reading this to give it a shot but if ya don’t then ya don’t it ain‘t the biggest deal in the whole world.

One thing Disney failed to learn is, when you do a live-action remake of an animated movie, copy and paste is the entire point. The whole idea is to bring the original version to life. Even only changing minor details can harm the final product. Beauty and the Beast was Disney's most successful live-action remake, and it was the most faithful to the original movie. Even then, it still had complaints from fans about changes to minor details. Every Disney remake since then has gotten progressively further from the source, and done progressively worse at the box office, to the point Disney execs might as well just burn the money to warm their homes in winter. And yes, I know this movie is DreamWorks, I'm just using Disney as the most salient example of how NOT to train your dragon.
