Very helpful videos.

Excellent video, just one pointer from a guy who works for one of the major tile setting mortar (ie thinset) manufacturers. Always put the water into your mixing bucket first, then slowly add the powder. You can add more water to adjust consistency if you need to. Most manufacturers will give you the maximum amount of water to add on the bag instructions. Same with grout or any cement based materials. They mix better.

I went thru a 4 yr apprenticeship to be a journeyman tile setter. 1970s. Back then we used string to space horizontal, eye and measuring vertical. All tile surface was adhered with pure cement, on sand, cement and lime plaster on walls and ceilings, that we floated ourselves to true up all surfaces. Used black rubber pails to mix in. All tile was soaked in square laundry tub that also doubled as a wet lube for tile saw.

Hubby and I did a tub surround and tile floor in our master bath 25 years ago. Although the cuts weren't perfect, those tiles still are perfect. No cracking, lifting, etc. I did regrout and seal everything about 4 years ago in preparation to sell. If done correctly, a tile job could last a lifetime. That house also had an original 1941 black and white tiled bathroom, that I regrouted and is in pristine shape to this day.

Very informative. I've been going through each of the videos in this series and it sounds like it really can be done over a few weekends. The only struggle I have is with the permitting process in my area. Any change in plumbing needs to be done by a master plumber. My scenario also needs an outlet to be moved.... After that, it feels like it'd be easier to just hire the whole project out.

It’s best to use a half inch by half inch notched trowel on tile the size specifically because of the way it suctions the tile to the wall better. Also clean the thinset off the face of the tile and off the edges of the tile with a margin trowel in sponge as you go itll make grouting so much easier and just the entire process in general.

I have always enjoyed doing tile and coming up with unique looks. The time is rewarding for sure for me and the home owner. Using mosaic tiles is a great way to do accent borders in many ways. I had one job I used one that had some glass 1 inch square pieces that I actually used on the by 12 tiles and I clipped the corners periodically when I did a job floor to ceiling. Then I continued the decorative mosaic border around the mirror that was recessed in the tile as well. It was a very rewarding job at the end and very well loved by the customer and friend of mine. I love using both styles of wet saws depending on the jobs. Putting the board across at the beginning and the same as your border section is always a plus. Fantastic job Josh, and wonderful choice of colors.

When I tiled my kitchen/dining room floor, my wife wanted black & white checkers. I did 12x12. Both tiles were the same brand, same specs, same everything, but the whites were consistently just a *little* bigger than the black. This ate at me forever. I got over it, but the, 'not every tile is perfect; it's ok' is really good advice. I know where the imperfections are, but literally nobody else does.

I remolded not only my 1st foreclosure house, but I also worked for 5 years for a remodeling company here in S. FL. Some great tips here, and it's a great video. Many DIYs don't realize you need that level piece of wood to make sure there are not obvious slanted lines and also support to the tile on walls till the thin set starts to take hold. Unless it's a new build, many showers have bowed and non-plumbed walls. You walk in a shower and eyes are always drawn to eye level and above. Rarely to a compensation cut at the bottom. Also back buttering is essential. Again, great video!

One of the best step by step tutorials that I have seen! Detailed without being boring. I will be doing a full shower like this next week. 12 x 12 staggered with an accent strip. No bullnose- Schluter strips instead.

@@wendyduncan9084 Spectacular! I had to get this bathroom remodeled for my customer by May 5 for their daughters wedding and I finished it up on April 30. Everyone happy and everyone LOVED IT! The Schluter strips are such a fantastic look over bullnose + my customers tile was not made with bullnose available.

Great work! Tiling is a bit of an art and it takes someone with patience and who takes pride in their finished work. You have both. If you are watching this video you could hire 10 tile setters and maybe one would be as good as he is.

It’s been a while since you posted this, but if you’re still curious about anyone who is doing a diy tile shower….well I’m doin it, bro. I’m doin it! First time though so it’s slow going and confidence ran out after I was told “demo” is not a legit interior design and I have to replace everything and can’t keep the toilet in the dining room. It’ll be a bit before I get to the tiling though. I’m just finishing up new insulation and electrical. Your videos are a huge help! I appreciate you!

I’m naturally a homebody so watching this is more therapeutic to me than getting drunk at a bar LOL. Love the quality and value of your videos bro. I’m hard-wired to details too. 👍🏽💯

I am not a "TILE LAYER" but I've done a few jobs. I never use a leveling system I've never even laid out lines on the wall like you did. I admire your work and I've learned from it and I agree some times tile can be warped Like a 2x4 from Menards. It's a dirty job its messy but I have never had any complaints. Especially when I'm working on my own house Hmmmmmmm.

I like your presentation, you’ve done a good job on that end. I started out watching KZread, self taught myself everything. I’m now building curbless showers and doing my own KZread videos. Won a few awards and have around 4500 followers on Instagram. Keep grinding brother. I think you’ll want to toss that 1/4” and get yourself a 1/2” notch trowel for LFT. The best thing I started doing was keeping my hands clean by wearing gloves, keeping my tiles and grout lines clean with a sponge and keeping my tools clean. We all know the work it takes to clean off dried thinset. Good work 💪🏻🔥

Of all the tiling videos I've seen this is the most extensive - Thanks! I read through all the comments to get a question answered and it must be annoying for a dozen people asking the same question about 11-1/4 vs. 11-3/4! I wondered also, but was clear by just reading comments. I also have watched your videos about installing, taping and waterproofing the cement board. But my question is about where the tiles meet the ceiling and concerns about water penetration. In your taping video I didn't see what you did there. Use Fibatape in corner between wall to ceiling? Thinset on the fibatape on shower wall and sheetrock spackling on the same Fibatape on ceiling? I am not sure the best way to do this to have to let no water get behind but to still be able to finish/paint ceiling. Again, thank you for the video and in advance for this answer!

  • @andrewstuner53
    @andrewstuner537 ай бұрын

when back buttering you should use the flat side of the trowel to make leveling simpler and save on thinset. Im sure there are other practical reasons but these are why I justify it.

Hello Josh, first thank you for making such instructional videos for the DIY folks out here! I would like to see how you do the tile shelves from 12 x 12 tiles, is there enough material from a single tile for the face plate, to get a finished shelf from a single 12 x 12 tile? If you already did a video on that I apologize ahead of time because I've missed or overlooked it. Thank you so very much.

Josh, really like your detailed videos including this one on installing tiles. I will be doing this in approx two weeks +/- as part of a total rehab to our 42 year old bathroom. Question , about how far did you extended the tile past the location (about 38:00+ in the video) of the shower door? Thanks
