That was a fantastic video. I had to pause it and rewind it a bit because you made me laugh so hard near the end. Those red arrows you added to the video are great to see specifically what you are talking about. I appreciate the extra effort you take to your make videos understandable.

Josh is the best!!! I gotta dig thru his videos to see how one connects a shower pan drain to plumbing that is set in concrete. Gonna be very different, I presume, then how he set and connected this shower pan drain with an open floor below.

Love the fact that the purple primer is a must as well. Whether it's code or not, is assures the fittings are cleaned when doing a lot of plumbing. I've used the trap in some situations that have a drain plug on the bottom in case something small would be dropped in the drain. Also depending on a the age of a project, I've added a clean out if code allows for a company to snake a drain out without going through the finished area of a shower or kitchen sink. Most companies who do this always appreciated this for not possibly causing scratches to tile or stainless steel sinks. Thank you for this video Josh. 👍🏻 I have had a pipe cutter made by Rigid for years that can cut up to 3" plastic and not real bulky.

Welcome back David! Oh yes purple primer is definitely important to use for many reasons. The inspector always checked to make sure he sees it on the joints. That’s a great idea to add a clean out close to the trap. The only other pipe cutter I have use is the ratchet style. I usually use those for the waterlines. The miter saw has always been a simple effective method for us. Thanks for stopping by and watching the video!

@@joshuawilson1989 Ours do not allow purple above the floor. You must use clear primer above grade and purple below.

great video, i bought the swivel connection to the P trap and put everything together and a have a very small leak from that connection. ive tightened it more without compromising it and now do i try and add some thread tape and try that ?? it seems seeded correctly when i connect everything. FRUSTRATED

I have the same issue. I am guessing you have to have the drain pipe installed first and the pipe measured so when you put the base pan in it is flush. Then when ready to install the base you would prime and glue the drain without being able to twist it for a better seal. Not much room for error, but it can be done.

Josh, you connected the drain from underneath vice from inside the bathroom on top of the drain. Did you do this because you had the crawl space available and its easier?

So for some reason the house that I bought the shower had a sump pump backflow valve attached to the plumbing and that broke do I replace it or just put in PVC to take its place

Just did this job on a shower installation. I used rain or shine glue .

Is it necessary to have a vent on a shower drain? Also can I tie that same drain to the kitchen sink drain? New construction. Great video BTW. Thanks P.S. This is in an off grid cabin with no toilet.

Does it matter how long the drain is before the trap? Could it be 8in?

Only question would be why not use a ratcheting pvc cutter? I have one that will do 2 1/2" and it works slick with little effort just curious really.

What if your on a slab

with that long drop from drain to P trap, have you noticed an increase in noise due to water from the drain splashing in the p trap water?

Well how do I do it when I don’t have access underneath it. Not an option.

How do you unclog that drain?

7:16 also make traps when access on bottoms of trap to unscrew and remove things that have fallen Down the sink, ya all know; earrings and rings are notoriously jumping into the sink, shower, drains and even toilets…..along w/ phones 😂

I don't think I'd ever install a trap that cant be unscrewed. I've had to remove sink and bathroom traps several times over the last 10 years in our house, and I can't imagine how much harder it would have been without them. Thankfully the builder installed them when they built the house (pre-built).

My drain line is so low to the ground that my shower p trap will be above it then require another bend back down to the drain line, is that okay? I don't really have a choice and I live out in the countryside where there's no code enforcement.

The ending though....frustration....I normally cuss during a job...but that's me.

I don’t mean to nitpick but I believe you have to prime and glue the PVC much faster. It seem that you took your time priming and only hurried once the glue was applied. I was always taught that you have to prime and glue real fast in fact you only have seconds in between priming gluing and twisting on. This is only DWV so it won’t be under pressure but otherwise you should do that more quickly. But otherwise I enjoy your videos.

You cut the pipe below the joist and added on to it with a coupling. Why didn’t you just use the right length pipe to begin with?

UPC code, mim 2" drain for a shower and your mim distance for a trap arm to a vent is 5 feet, but most inspectors will allow 6 to 7 feet. I would ask your local building dept. what they would like to see.

But that floor joist!!! ARRRGG!

How can you put a trap under a slab after you set it in a shower?

Ideally there should already be a trap in the plumbing under your slab somewhere. Doing a building right now where the sink and shower connect under the slab, then down the line before the septic there is a trap under the slab near the outside of the building. If you can’t smell septic/sewer coming from the drain, that is probably the case.

Great video but where is your cleanout? My wifes hair constantly clogs my tub and i would hate to have to cut it off to find the clog and snake it!

Because the pipe coming up was already installed and glued. He had to join those 2 pipes. If you used the trap with threads he could have just used one long piece from the drain to the j with no coupling needed.

Hacking up the whole floor joist, not ideal. Just shave a portion at the top of the joist with a hole saw just enough for a 45 degree street elbow, add a short piece of pipe to gain space away from the joist, add regular 45 degree elbow down to where you want the trap and carry on.
