great video! love that you go up and start at the second tile, especially for mortar bed pans. That way you can tile the floor to the wall then place the last row of wall tile over the floor tile.

Josh, very informative video. Amazing job you did in explaining and covering everything I wanted to know: 1. Love the method you used on getting center point on the first wall. Genius! 2. good explanation on why those support boards are needed. makes perfect sense!

Very good videos, no messing around just to the point with only the info you need with meaningful tips etc.

It is always so much simpler using a ledger board and do the bottom row last. The time it takes to lay it out is so important. Yes, we always do our best to get the shower pan or tub in level, but the product can sometimes have a slight difference. Fighting the first row with shims etc is just harder than doing the first row last. Love the detail to finding the center and space allowance. Important to also make sure your tile is the same lot number even from a tile store, not only a box store. Usually ordering the tile, it will be the same lot. Great job Josh. 👍🏻

Sounds like you think alike. The ledger board it’s just so much easier than trying to mess with getting the first row perfect off the pan. That’s a good tip about the lot number on the boxes. I remember having two different lot numbers on a box in the shades were much different. I appreciate you sharing your expertise David! And as always thanks for watching!

Finding the centers is fine. I actually like to layout tiles with spacers on a floor so I can see precisely what size cuts I will have. I don't want little 1" cuts at the ceiling or anything. I also install a lot of recessed shampoo niches and want to make sure I place those in a good place to avoid small cuts there as well.

Definitely one of the best explained shower layouts I've seen! Simple and to the point without excluding important info. I'd like to know how you waterproofed the shower, doesn't look like anything I've seen. I've used Wedi for all my project and it seems a bit overpriced. And I've heard people have problems with it compared to something like schluter. Also would like to see how you tile niches. Always the hardest part of the project.

Quick question if you don’t mind and I think I know the answer but let’s say I got the point where I’m ready for the steps in this video and then found that my shower pan is slightly off level. Not enough to affect water flow to the drain but enough for the 12.375 line to be over on one end and under on the other. Would the best course of action to be use the largest spot to draw the ledger line and then trim the bottom row of tiles to fit at the end?

Hey, love your videos and the tips you provide. I am going to be installing 3" wide subway tile in my shower and I have a shower niche that sits in the middle of the wall. The niche is unfortunately 13.5" high which is not perfectly divisible by 3" wide tiles and 1/8" wide grout lines. To make it pleasing to the eye, I plan to center the tiles around the niche. This will result in the first row of tiles above the shower floor having to be cut down to 2.5" wide. This kind of sucks because there will be a cut end that meets the shower floor. The tile and the grout are both white, so it will hopefully not be too noticeable. It would have been nice to have a full tile on the first row, but I don't see how I can do that without having an eye sore when looking at the tile around the niche. Am I going about this right or do you suggest a different method?

Is it best to use a polymodified thin set?

Have watched a couple of your videos and they are excellent. Like how you explain the important details thoroughly but don't waste time on useless chatter. Thank you for not blasting endless music at the beginning. I don't bother watching video's that do that. You should do a video on how to do video's....you are very good at it. Also, you are obviously someone who knows their craft. Thank you for sharing....it is much appreciated.

Did you use durock for this tile job like you did for the tub surround? If not, why?

wall tiles over floor tiles (floor tiles from wall to wall first) or wall tiles first to ground and than floor tiles to wall tiles?

Where did you get your tile from and what's the name? Would like to use thus for my shower.

Is this also applied to Sheetrock walls?

You screwed right through/penetrated the waterproof membrane with those decking screws. So I hope when you took those boards off you re-sealed those holes through the membrane. Water only needs the tiniest hole to wreak havoc.

BTW, the tile should be in vertical way.

Any ideas how to even tile when the accent tile(13x36) is 1/16th thicker than the rest of the main tiles(4x16)?

Plumb lines are nice, but what if the walls and corners are not plumb?

What happened to the 33% offset needed for these larger tiles ? My understanding, AND it states on the tile packaging that you should NOT do a 50% tile layout .

@@TheExcellentLaborer thank you. i have a 70 year old tub i put back in place. it has a small thin lip. i keep getting mixed info. set the cement board on the lip and some say carry it over the lip down onto the tub. i want to go a little bit down over the lip, but maybe leave a 1/4 inch gap. i'm using smaller subway like tile so i want more bite on the tile. i actually waterproofed both side of the cement board and the edges about a foot up off the tub. before planning on screwing them on. should help stop wicking? idk. brick mason for 30 years, remodeling my house.

Would have liked to see an overview of all the stops before jumping into this much detail. Its really hard to follow when you don't see the point of each step.

Using a story board is actually to keep all your tile going up the wall straight and in line not sagging. If you start of the pan and try to use spacers it will be heck. Plus using the story board you can always flip your tile and mark to cut them to the exact fit of the bottom of floor because nothing is ever perfect level.

Is 1/4” x 1/4” trowel ok for 12x24” tile? I am reading it should be 1/2”

Don’t you need to find your high spot on the ceiling and adjust your first row to avoid thin cuts at the top?

Just use a laser level.. so much more accurate than a level !!

Good video EXCEPT: All tile professionals and thinset companies will tell you without hesitation to READ THE LABEL and mix it according to the formula they have developed. The "peanut butter consistency" probably works---but some thinsets are very complicated and have a lot of chemistry going on in them and the companies laticrete, mapei etc spent millions of dollars working out the formulas. That being said, they require exact amount of water and powder- with precise mixing instructions---like mix for x minutes, let it sit for x minutes, mix again for x minutes, then use it. Just adding some water to a peanut butter consistency is s setup for failure. I know----it happened to me. One day my 24x24 floor tiles had settled a tiny bit and were no longer level one to another---all because I wasn't using the proper ratios. Once I chipped them out and found out why---I never deviated from the mixing instructions again and never had another issue. I am 100% positive all tile professionals and thinset companies will agree with me on this and disagree with you. Its not who is right or wrong----you make great videos and I watch them all and am almost finished with my house thanks to you- but this is an important issue. THanks Josh.

Useful info, but anyone struggling with all the maths, just measure in metrics, all in 10 and 10th's of measurements, you can do all calculations by heart.

Every tile starting from the second row will be a full tile... Only the first row will be cutt required height

U didn't talk about the top row. Avoid a sliver. Maybe u did off line but critical for DYR folks to know u calculate top ror and I'd its less than 1/2 a tile, then add a 12. 1/8. To the sliver and divide by 2 for both top and bottom row......also chat about how u handled bottom outside corner of pan to tile around

Why not show how to do the cement boards? Magically there’s cement boards with the holes cut out

Informative indeed, and less wordy than Starr Tile's explaiantion. Only thing that kills me is the singular use of plurals, like "three foot". Three feet, and dont say its a colloquialism. Help us keep America smart so china doesn't win. Few other items: even with porcelain tile, I usually use large-format white thinset that is acceptable for use in wet applications. The main thing is make sure to find a thinset that has low-sag properties so the there is less chance for the tile to move, especailly on a vertical surface.

couldn't you have used a laser lever and not had to repair the screw holes?

Why do you get your walls waterproof and then put screws holes in them ? hmmm 🤔

I don’t think putting a screw trough u waterproofing is very smart especially when u just spent time and money (for waterproof tape redgaurd or Kerdi) to cover screw hole but what do I know

I have viewed watch your videos and I am for confused now then when I started Way to much math
