How to Tile a Shower Wall...Vertical 12x24 Porcelain -- by Home Repair Tutor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today's video shares tips on how to tile a shower wall, specifically the main shower wall in a Schluter KERDI shower. We'll deep dive into layout, industry guidelines, and what tools we use.
For more home improvement tips visit www.homerepairtutor.com/👍🏼
Supplies used in this video:
48" x 72" Shluter shower kit -- amzn.to/2WHrnlb
Kerdi Trowel -- amzn.to/2t6VaGb
6" putty knife --amzn.to/2GpXD6w
Unmodified Thin-Set -- amzn.to/2BnJPWR
Sundstrom Silica Dust Respirator -- amzn.to/2MkIB30
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1 is to determine the layout of the shower. Ensure there are no slivers of tile at the ceiling, floor, or walls.
Step 2 is to get all your supplies in the bathroom and protect the floor.
Step 3 is to align a laser level on the starting point and tile one column at a time.

What beautiful work! I always wondered how vertical tiles would stick to a wall and not fall off. You butter back of tile (vertically) and use spacer clips to hold in place which also presses down the edge. There is also a wire mesh backing to the substrate surface, probably to create a better grip for thinset. Very interesting. Useful DIY tips and also useful if you use a contractor to check quality of work. Subscribed.

If understand you correctly: 1) you started by installing the midpoint of the tile overlapping the center of back wall -- to ensure the vertical tiles are symmetrical to the center of the back wall??? May end up trimming tiles on both (not one) sides. Obviously that won't be a problem if installing horizontal tiles. 2) the floor has to be perfectly leveled or the tiles at the top may not line perfectly?? Or better to start from top? Pls clarify both. Thanks.

Other videos show running the thinset in the direction of the narrow side of the tile yet you chose to run it the opposite. Also, other videos show shifting the tiles 1/4-1/2" to collapse the thinset channels and you don't seem to do that. Is this just a style difference, or did the recommended procedure change in the 3 yrs since you filmed this?

Did you mix the thinset on the lower end of the water recommendation for these tiles? I found that when i mixed the all set for the edge band and membrane stuff (i used mostly kerdi board) and mixed it to the wetter side (7.5-8.5 quarts per 50 pound bag) it stayed that consistency for about an hour then noticeably started to dry after that. I haven't mixed an entire 50 pound bag yet because there was no way i could apply it and trowel it out fast enough to do all the water proofing in my shower. I do know you want the thinset drier for the tile, but I am worried when I mix it it will become too dry before i am able to use it all. The consistency at about an hour and a half was kind of like slightly wet sand I thought. Still held a notch on the trowel pretty well, and I am assuming that is what I want for putting these 12x24 tiles down. I bought rubi cyclone spacers to do mine and my shower is exactly the same size as this one in this video, and I am even running the same size tiles and same direction, just minus the shower bench and I have a window on my back wall that I am going to trim with the schluter pieces like a niche, and then a niche on the opposite of plumbing wall.

You have to account for the difference in thickness so the faces of the tile sit flush with each other after setting or it will look very unprofessional. There are ways to build up with thinset or a combination of products to bring the thinner tile up. It is time consuming.

Would you be able to direct me to that video?

@@nickad We got quartz shower walls installed. Those slabs are 1 piece 5ftx6ft and 2 pieces 5ftx3ft -- huge panels. The installer used 100% silicone, but as blobs that are 9 inches apart. The same method should work for tiles as well. However, with tiles, each one being smaller and you need many of them to cover a shower wall, you will need to think about the spacings. What would you do for the spacing and how water proof would that be? Thats probably why people dont silicone tiles? May be you can bead the silicone as if its back buttering with thinset, you may still end up with uneven tile depths from the wall. Good luck with your pursuit.

It’s to help get better thin-set mortar coverage on the tile and wall. Trowel size depends on the size, shape, and thickness of tile. 12x24 are large format, so we recommend back buttering or back troweling and directional troweling both the wall and tile to get 95 to 100% mortar coverage between the tile and wall. This along with a good mortar, like Ardex X77, will ensure a good bond

Thank you, trowel size depends on the tile shape, size, and weight, e.g. 3" x 6" subway tile need 1/4" x 1/4" square notch trowel. So back buttering is mostly to get the 95% thin-set mortar coverage more than anything.

Home Repair Tutor Thanks! Doing my own bathroom, shower build just completed and I’m about to use very similar tile, using the white All-Set just in case. I’m a an overly cautious over-preparer LOL And because of this particular series of yours, I’m going vertical with my large tile. I really like the look! So thank you!

@@NativeNYerChicHK awesome, if you have any questions just send me an email, it's a bit easier to communicate that way than in the comments. We highly recommend using a laser level and back troweling the tiles to help in setting over thin-set buildup in the corners. Directional trowel in the direction of the short side, we didn't do that in our video but recommend it. That way air will escape easier through the trowel ridges. Also make sure to trowel thin-set on the back of the tile such that it matches the direction on the wall. And you might want to look into T-Lock if your tiles are 12x24, it helps keep all the tiles flush with each other. Here's my email jeff@homerepairtutor.com

Home Repair Tutor Thanks so much! Got my leveling system and my dual line laser level at the ready! Thanks for the tip about the directional troweling towards the short side, but that makes absolute sense since any trapped air will have a shorter route to escape! If I have question I will definitely shoot you guys an email.

When installing vertical tile, it's ALWAYS start from a level line above the shower floor since it can be (and almost always is) un-level. This is a big mistake in my opinion to just start tiling from the floor because your grout lines will magnify your mistake as you go up the wall. This mistake is mentioned at minute 8:30...."I should have..."

  • @tewcool2539

    @tewcool2539

    4 жыл бұрын

@@tracis.5673 Traci, to install vertical tile, you need to screw a 2x4 or a sturdy piece of finished wood to the wall perfectly level. The piece of wood will hold your vertical tile in place while it dries and guarantee square grout lines. It should be less than one tile above the floor line. When your tile dries, you remove the board, fix and seal any holes left by screwing the board to the wall. Then you will put in the last row of vertical tile across the floor line which you will need to cut each piece to match the floor line. ** Side notes ** If you are doing a shower floor, always do your walls (and ceiling if desired) first except for that last row so you don't mess up newly installed tile/grout. Next do the floor. Last of all tile the last row of vertical tile so the water drains on top of the floor tile. I hope this helps.

@@rdmj64 HI Roy, you just cut each tile to match the space below the 2x4, and please note that each piece is usually a different size AND maybe uneven across the floor line. Measure the distance at both ends of the tile and cut that angle. The floor tile will cover any small gaps.

The 1/3 pattern has to do with the natural bow in a long tile. If you run a 50% bond chances are very good the crown in the middle of the tile will cause lippage (the edges of adjoining tile to be uneven). Most tile makers have a maximum offset listed for their product. You can run them with no bond (no offset) in a modern pattern since all the crowns (humps) will be lined up. Some tile are much worse than others.
