How to tie your shoes | Terry Moore

Ғылым және технология

www.ted.com Terry Moore found out he'd been tying his shoes the wrong way his whole life. In the spirit of TED, he takes the stage to share a better way. (Historical note: This was the very first 3-minute audience talk given from the TED stage, in 2005.)
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/translate.

I never thought to question why my shoes and boots always come untied until recently. 3min of video corrected roughly 27 years of incorrect shoe tieing. I cooked lunch in the kitchen of a developmentally disabled facility. If it was a popular dish, 85 meals that day. When a social worker brought a new candidate to work in the kitchen, the first thing I did was look at this person’s shoes. If they had velcro instead of laces, I knew, from experience, that their functioning ability was very low. Too low to be much of a help.

    It also works if on the first step when you cross the strings, just cross them the other way, then tie as normal. Figured this out on my own.

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen2 жыл бұрын

    Note that if you do the bottom crossing the other way around, you can keep doing the loop part as you did earlier. Changing the way you do the bottom part is much easier than re-learning the loop part. Good tip about the bow orientation. That's a good method to diagnose the problem if you're not sure if you did it correctly or not.

    You can actually reverse either of the two knots made when you tie shoes. If you are set on wrapping clockwise or counter clockwise to make the bow then check to see if you're starting the first knot left over right or right over left.

    The difference between the two knots is, if you pull the loops out after tying, the "weak" knot is a granny knot and the "strong" knot is a square knot. There's actually an even better knot called the "turquoise turtle" knot (named after the boutique store it was developed at) (Google the name of the knot to find instructions). I've been using that knot exclusively since 1998, on all types of shoestrings and have had my shoes or boots come untied twice (yes, two times) since.

  • @mkh123
    @mkh1239 жыл бұрын

    It may be easier to just reverse the "base knot" and do the actual knot as normal. You still get the same strong version of the knot.

  • @lopezb

    @lopezb

    Good tip! The REASON the second way works better is easy to understand: because the first way is essentially a "Granny Knot" while the second is a square knot. The Granny Knot is the false square knot and is the bane of all beginning Boy Scouts. I discovered this for myself only recently after decades. But the reason I discovered it is because my 9-year-old son's laces always come untied and I wanted to help him. There remains the question as to why we all tie it the wrong way (a Granny knot). Reason: I am right-handed so the first overhand knot is right over left, and it's easier to follow it by right over left again, giving the Granny. You have to consciously think "roght over left; left over right " to get the square knot described in the video. Now there's a well-known fix known as the double knot: just tie an overhand knot (either direction will work- but best would be another square knot, so R/L, L/R, R/L)) on top of the usual knot. To undo it, you have to first undo the overhand knot, then pull the lace. But this has the disadvantage that if you forget you tied a double knot and simply pull on the lace, it will tighten and be much harder to untie. There's a BETTER OPTION my Dad taught me which he I think taught himself when he was in his 80s. We call it "Grandpa's knot". You tie it just like the standard knot, but you loop it around one extra time. So, it's like R/L overhand, then either way but twice (best would be L/R). Sort of like a "fisherman's knot" which is a many -times-repeated overhand. The ADVANTAGE is it amost never comes undone (almost as stable as the double knot) but it unties with a simple pull of the lace. BUT my son has trouble tying this so we stick with whatever and re-tie it for him in emergency!

    Just put the bow in the right hand instead of the left hand, and you won't have to do the awkward motion of wrapping the lace around the counterintuitive way, and you can accomplish the same "strong knot". 6 in one hand half a dozen in the other. Thank you Mr Moore for bringing the "strong knot" to my attention. This explains the people that can never seem to keep their laces from coming undone, and now I know what to look out for, if I'm showing them how to keep this from happening. Thanks!

    This is basically a reef knot - the most fundamental knot used at sea, vs a granny knot, which is practically a bow tie. My father has been racing yachts his whole life, so he taught me the correct way to tie shoelaces when I was 3, explaining why this was far better than how my granny had initially taught me. ❤️

    Great video. Used the tying your shoes concept metaphorically in my new syndicated column Techlife - "Life Online - 3 Must Follow Tips"

    This also works if you oppose the direction of the base knot and keep the traditional direction of the bow knot on top. If you oppose both the direction of the base knot as well as the bow knot on top (like mr. Terry Moore demonstrated), the problem will remain. I find however that opposing the bow knot on top, as mr. Moore showed, is the easiest of both options.

    You can do this with the double loop method as well, as long as the first and the second knot aren't made the same way round.

    Instead of reversing the direction of the wrap-around step of the loop-making stage of the bow as Terry says, you can switch which lace goes over and which goes under in the first stage of the bow. When I cross the laces (the very first step), I put the right lace below (closer to the toe) the left lace, so I have to reverse the direction of the wrap-around step to get a strong knot. When I put the right lace ABOVE the left, I can make the loop in my usual manner and still get the strong knot.

    When I was about ten years old, someone (sorry I can’t remember who to credit) taught me to do the knot you showed, but do the loop twice - once around as shown, then pull the whole lace through and loop a second time, only pushing the bow through on the second pass. My shoes untie themselves so infrequently (literally less than once a year), that I am astonished when it happens. The only caution is that when you pull to untie, don’t let the loose end pull THROUGH the loop - it will form a knot that you’ll then need to untangle.

    Now, carry that one step further, I learned my grandmother's method which will not ever come untied accidentally but still untie easily when you want it to. Just bring the loop that you tuck through and put it through a second time, then tighten it. That got my children all through childhood with nary a mishap. Yet when you want to untie it just pull the two ends with out the struggle of the double knot where you again tie the loops.
