How To Tie The Ultimate Surf Fishing Rig (Modified Dropper Rig)

Ойын-сауық

It’s beach fishing time!!
In this video, I’m going to show you how to tie my favorite rig for surf fishing.
I’ve fished from the beach for many years, have tried a bunch of different rigs, and this one is my favorite by far.
It does take a little bit of extra time up front, but it’s worth it, especially if there are toothy fish like sharks or Spanish mackerel around, or if there are a lot of rocks or other objects to get snagged on.
Before I learned how to tie this rig, if I got broken off, I would have to retie the whole thing, but with this design, if you get broken off, all you have to do is retie one small part of it.
This saves you loads of time on the water, which helps you catch more fish.
Have any questions about this rig?
Let me know in the comments below!

  • @NoOne56488
    @NoOne56488 Жыл бұрын

The length of line coming off the main line can tangle around the main line, so fish will bite at the bait and not hook them self on it using circle hooks. Once i attached circle hooks to the dropper loops i started to catch way more fish as the hooks don't wrap around the mainline.

Showing what the rig looks like before you start is BRILLIANT! I know where I am heading. So many people show you tying knots and cutting tags and most fisherman can do that, but we never see the final rig in entirety. Knowing what the rig looks like from the start is fantastic!

I've been building my own beach rigs for years and this is an excellent instructional video. Newbies, USE THIS!!! The rigs you buy at the store will cause you to NOT catch fish. They are too bulky, have too much metal and beads ... they scare fish away. If you are new to making your own rigs and tying knots, instead of tying an FG knot to your line, use the smallest swivel you can get away with. My personal preference is a 20 or 30lb SPRO swivel. However, If you have a little experience with knots, the FG Knot is the way to go.

This is almost exactly what I use for redfish rig out on the jetty. I call it the skeleton rig. I use fg knot to a 10-20ft 50lb core, with 30lb extension and surgeons knot for all the loops. The long core helps against abrasion on the rocks.

Here in Naples, FL our fishing club has been using Fishbites for a few years. Many reasons including that in the summer our live shrimp are very small and hard to use. Many of us use Fishbites as a tipping on our jigs. Fishbites fished alone can be effective if the current is not too strong. Many of our larger fish are caught using this product. Lloyd Doerflinger

Hi Luke! I really appreciated this video, but for a slightly different reason. This "modular" system allows me to rig my surf reels with the "core" line, and attach all of the offshoots, loop to loop right at the beach! They are so much more compact than 3 feet of rigging to unwind and untangle! 2 of my rods are 12 feet and there's no way I can go to the beach fully pre rigged. Thanks Buddy!

I've seen some blogs that say to use a leader that is as long as the pole plus 2 or 3 wraps around the reel that is 10 pounds for every ounce thrown. So if I were throwing 4 oz weights use 40 lb braid. Since 80 lb braid is the same size as 30lb mono, that is the recommended size. What are your thoughts on using the 80lb braid as the main line and the 30 mono as each line off?

  • @shoganai6152

This rig needs a name... I can see the thought and experience you've put into it, and thank you for sharing it. I have a friend who described his similar setup and referred to it as a "drop shot" rig, and "Modified Dropper" just doesn't seem to do justice. Maybe "Bottom Dropper Plan B"? Because you've set it up to come out OK even if unexpected things happen to it.

@saltstrong: Great video. Will definitely watch several times and use this rig for my next trip. My question: You're using 20 and 30 leader lines. What line strength do you use for the main line? If the leader gets snagged and the main line is say, 15 lbs, then it will break before any of the leaders do and I will lose everything. Comments? Thanks.

I would tie the rig itself to a swivel just for ease of use when tying on to the main line. Just makes it easier tying on and taking off without eventually running your rig down to the hooks itself.
