I am native American-English speaker. I worked for company in US (in Silicon Valley California) that hired many non-native speakers (non-US citizens, but usually college educated). Most could speak English fluently. When I was just starting work at this company, I asked one (he was from India) how he spoke English so well, and he told me the same thing as Marina , he forced himself to start thinking in English. Two other guys I worked with were non-native speakers, but had learned English when they were children. One learned after he moved to the US as a teenager, and his English was very smooth. He told me he practiced by singing in English (he was a musician). The other learned English in Malaysia as a child/teenager and was taught by Catholic nuns in school. His pronunciations were like someone well educated in England. He rarely used American slang. I used to joke with him that he spoke the King's English. Very formal. Now I need to learn Español, because I live close to the US-Mexico border. And many many US citizens down here speak both. And I want to travel in Mexico and be able to communicate. so Le Vaya Bien. :-)

i started with my phone to english, everyone was saying 'why did you do that? do you understand anything? believe me, you will not turn your phone to polish again!' and you know what? i don't even want it. i don't want my phone to be in my native language, because i'm used to it. the second thing i did, um... oh i know, in december i started to write my diary in english, and i can't stop writing in it, cause i want to leave my memories there. i like, when i just open my diary and i start to reading it. it makes me feel like 🥺 when i read what happened in my school, probably if i didn't make it, i wouldn't remember what happened that day at all, and it helped me a lot in learning english. i'm from poland, but when i want to write something, i want to write it in english. other people from my class are like 'wow, where you learned it? you're so good in english!' but i think it's just from my desires. if you want, you can😉

Hi, Marina. Let me share my experience. I gave up translating English into my mother tongue in order to comprehend English a couple of years ago. Before then, I had 100% depended on translating to understand English for years and had remained a lower intermediate speaker of English. I had difficulties for a few months when I first started it. However, nearly half a year later since I began, I recognized that I started thinking only in English. BTW, I’m Japanese and I went through this process only in my country. Truth be told, I have never studied abroad in any native English countries. What helped me to be an advanced speaker of English is KZread videos and your channel is one of them. Let me tell you, thank you very much. Your videos are awesome. Please keep doing amazing videos. Love you.😄👍

What I did every day in English besides my work is reading. I've been buying and reading only English books with hope, that it could help me improve my English. Well, to get used to it while speaking also as I read books out loud lol. Another one is the one that is not what I used to do but commenting your video is one. Thank you for the tips!

Omg, I love your videos because I always learn something new. I've never travelled so I've not had much contact with native speakers but I do practise every day and I never read without an audio book. By the way I totally agree with the fact that we're taught erroneously, the teachers always tell us to translate in our head even when kids don't learn that way so thanks for your videos! 🤗 🤗 ❤️. Sending love from Mexico!

Every day I'm singing like following a song in english and I'm not ambarassed where ever I'm but just my accent only is better that the translation in my head it's still holding on me. I'm really spending my time for english as reading, listening and following the lyrics of the songs.

The solution is to speak with those people who won't judge your grammar. People don't know your native language . so they would only focus on what are you trying to say instead of your grammatical mistakes . And second thing there would be no option for you to switch the language between conversation . You just have to complete your sentence in that scenario , no matter how bad your grammar was . One more thing is online class with professional teachers . They would just talk to you and will improve your skills at the same time . and more thing , please stop feeling embarrassed , did you ever feel embarrassed when you were a kid . NO ! and you often see kids can learn many languages easily , coz they are natural learners and they don't care about acceptance from others . Become a kid again . there is nothing to loose . It is about going up , falling and standing up again , and learn walking .. Good luck 👍👍👍
