How To /The most awesome chisel rack ever

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a cool design I thought of for an awesome chisel rack.
A few months back my friend Steve Carmichael sent me his old chisels and they were sitting on my workbench in the way so today I made this vid showing how I built my awesome chisel rack
I hope you like it

Nice rack. Inherited tools are the majority of what I have from flea markets and garage sales. Picked up some good chisels and hand planes over the years including some Stanleys that were built in the 1800s and early 1900s. Since no one seems to be teaching shop these days, no one learns to use them and we can get them pretty cheap. A little restoration and they are good to go. Love seeing older wood repurposed for projects like this as well. Good job.

Nicely done! Using the plexiglass to leave the width visible is a great idea. While I was watching you make the repetitive cuts to get width, I was thinking that the next fancy tool somebody needs to build is a dedicated adjustable dado machine, one that can mechanically set the width based on a size you input. Now, there's a Christmas present!

Love the design so much I made one myself. Worked fantastic. I unfortunately didn’t have thick plexiglass, only about 4mm thick. I soon found out to oversized the holes in the Plexiglass, to allow for wood expansion/contraction and not to use a cordless on the screws as either will crack the plastic. But I’ve had the rack for a year or so and it works well. Love being able to see at a glance which chisel to use.

I don't think I've ever seen chisels stored horizontally on a wall, but it looks like it works well and I love the use of acrylic. I suppose if they ever get a little lose in their holder, you could add a small magnet to the slot. Are you back full throttle for content creation now?

Hi that is so clever mate, I noticed when you were cutting out for you chisels your blade was burning the wood. This could be a build up of resins on the saw blade, you could clean it with methylated spirits. No naked flames when doing this. Cheers

I just took a piece of wood and drilled holes in it for the different sized chisels that I have. I have the same chisels you have but I have noticed that mine get dull cause nothing is protecting the tips and it is on my bench. I am going to give your method a shot cause it looks like it works.

It looks great. Makes me think some of them may be apt to fall out. Maybe its just my shop set up that shakes too much from hand sawing or other similar activities. The plexiglass front is a nice touch for good visibility of what tool is where.
