How to Test for Dyslexia - Dyslexia Connect

How do you test for dyslexia? Peter discusses this interesting question in this video. Find more information on how to test for dyslexia at www.dyslexiaconnect.com . Subscribe to our channel for more episodes of our dyslexia blog.
People often ask whether there is a quick and easy dyslexia test. Unfortunately, there is not. Since dyslexia is complex and comes in various degrees, there is no simple do-it-yourself test for dyslexia. You can, however, have your child tested for dyslexia by a qualified individual.
There are two types of dyslexia tests or evaluations:
1. An informal dyslexia evaluation.
2. A formal dyslexia evaluation.
What is the difference between the two?
An informal dyslexia test or evaluation is often performed by a dyslexia tutor. This sort of evaluation or test is inexpensive and does not take much time; it may only require the length of a normal tutoring session. At the end of the session, the dyslexia tutor will be able to tell you whether your child has obvious signs of dyslexia, and what those signs are. An informal evaluation is great if you simply want to know if your child is dyslexic, or want to figure out the proper help that they need.
We offer an informal dyslexia test or evaluation with our free trial at www.DyslexiaConnect.com .
A formal dyslexia test or evaluation is performed by a doctor or psychiatrist. They are more expensive than informal evaluations and often require several hours of testing. A formal dyslexia test and evaluation is useful if you need a dyslexia diagnosis for a school, to set up an IEP, or to get accommodations on testing.
To set up a free trial that includes an informal dyslexia evaluation, visit us at www.dyslexiaconnect.com .

I think I have dyslexia sometimes I have issues reading out loud and sometimes think a lot about spelling a word. When I read a story I completely forgot what I read and have to re-read it. I also sometimes add words in a sentence that aren't their and when I'm writing or typing I some times skips words and people don't understand me.

Am I dyslexic? I cannot read out loud and I miss out lines and sentences. I have a problem with spelling, and I often replace a b with a p or vice versa. I have to read sentences again and again to it to sink in, and I am shockingly bad at algebraic maths

I think i am possibly dyslexic but my parents say that they dont think i am. I am 14 and for the last 2-3 years i have struggled a lot to read and say i read a page of a book or a sentense i will have to read it lots of times for me to understand it. Also when i read words seam to swap places so the word order is different. I also have to think a lot when spelling words aloud, i have to write them down.

I don’t know if I have dyslexia because I’m 16 and I don’t know if that’s too late to get a diagnosis. I’m good at spelling sometimes. I’m just really bad at memorizing text. I have to reread 2-4 times when I read a textbook for school. It happens a lot when reading a textbook. Maybe because it’s boring? It happens a few times for math too. When I read a sentence, sometimes I can’t remember and I have to go back and sometimes go back and read it slowly to really get it. I do this because I forget the words and/or they switch in my head and then don’t make sense. When I have to read to the class, I don’t remember anything I read out loud and then I reread it once I don’t have to read it out loud anymore. I also day dream a lot when I’m reading. Like I space out and then I come back. I can read a chapter book better than I can read a textbook though.

Wow, I'm just learning I might be dyslexic.....I've always struggled to read chapter books ALL my life and have just recently begun to read them. I would constantly re-read old graphic novels because I wasn't able to finish a chapter book without getting frustrated because I couldn't focus on the words. I've also realized with test's which I'm doing currently I struggle to focus on the tiny text they type the reading passages in...so for the first time today I saw dyslexia font... it's AMAZING!! I'm finally able to read without having to go over and over and over and re-read what I have already read...this truly is a lifesaver and now I finally can go get a proper diagnosis from a specialist!

I feel as thiugh i have dyslexia, fir some things here are the reason: 1. When i am tyoing, i always mix up “O” with “I” 2. I always jumble letters, like writing bigger words shch as “soemthing” and “moght” are words i soell wrong a lot- 3. It is difficult to read outloud for me 4. This paraghraphh took a long time, and there are a lot of mistakes. Sorry if it was hard to understand :) 5. When i go to write “happened” or long words, i will often use different letters, or skip lots of letters, like i could skip the first two letters and just do a “P” and then have ti gi back.

I have not been tested on any extent as to whether or not I am dyslexic. A common tell tale sign is that I may take 1 1/2 times as long to read a single sentence or paragraph, because I frequently find myself reading sentences and paragraphs from the middle to the end. Then I need to read it all from the beginning. ADHD is my main Achilles heel, so dyslexia is the least of my worries. However, I have not been formally tested yet. So I don’t really know the actual severity.

I came here after hearing my fave youtuber, @Tubbo was dyslexic And was like, "Dyslexia? Sounds dangerous"- And instead of looking for THIS video I searched "Tubbo being dyslexic" aaaaand it just broke my heart- And when this was recommended for me I called my elementary friend to watch this with me. I wasn't dyslexic and was just naturally nervous, but I think my friend was. She would take time to spell "Diagnosis", "prohibited", "caution" etc.... and after she reads a book she din't understand anything so she would re-read it and sometimes misread a word in a simple sentence.

I'm easily forgetful after reading something, even a simple leaflet which then I will force myself read it again and again from the beginning. When I write something on a paper, even if a word written looks a bit uneasy to me, I will rub it off and write the same word again. When I did some mistakes, even it was a small mistake, I will become easily depressed and I will extremely search for any way so that I won't repeat the mistake again.

I really enjoy reading novels in off time. When reading to myself, in my head, I read just fine and pretty much comprehend what I’m reading. But I notice reading out loud to my kids, i can’t read as smooth as I do when reading to myself. I did have reading troubles when I was in early grade school and was kinda a jackass when it came to school work. Went to doctors and all that at the time and I was put on addarall, which I did not like at all and after maybe 5 years of being drugged with it, I made my own choice to stop the medication by high school. I maybe had problems with spelling in the beginning but I feel I’m an above average speller. Not sure why I’m writing this but if it helps anyone out, I guess that’s a plus. I just discovered your channel and I am enjoying the info. Btw I’m 32yrs old at the time of typing this.

When I read something I have a habit of reading the same sentence like I've not completely understood it or gave my brain enough time to grasp the information within the sentence, I find myself going back and reading the same sentence two or three times to just to let it sink in, If I get ambitious and try read too fast I forget previous pages and have to go back. It's not all the time though, sometimes I can read just fine in front of people and out loud, the words just flow but with every book I delve it to it can feel more of chore than anything, my concentration is foggy, recalling information after finishing a book is like trying to carve water from a stone and its not just reading, diagrams can be quite challenging for me given the complexity of the subject. I've never been tested for dyslexia but I've always wondered why I have some difficulty reading, oh and I'm not confident in my handwriting or spelling intricate words. I tend to get frustrated when I'm writing and I end up ripping the pages out and starting again until I'm satisfied, this can really be discouraging and time consuming, weird I know but I'm just trying to be honest, reading for me can be a daunting task at times, even when you just want to just pick up a book and feel connected with the author, unfortunately I've never got feel that way about reading.

I constantly make typing errors. When I read using my mind, It becomes soooo slow that I'd need to read words out loud. I'm inconsistent with my pronouns. Reading a book or a piece of literature especially one I'm not that interested in exhausts me. Sometimes whe I'm reading something, I just find myself reading on without even understanding what a sentence meant so I'd have to read it again, multiple times sometimes. When my mom asks me to buy something from a store, I'd always forget what it was unless I wrote them down. I also have problems remembering names of people, things, movies, videos as well as events. I thought I just had a really short attention span but when I somehow came across a reply on one of my comments implying I might have Dyslexia, that's when I started to think abd dive deeper into it.

I think I may have developed symptoms of dyslexia soon after starting to learn to read Thai. Some letters in Thai resemble some Latin letters but have different pronounciation, so that may have triggered a neurological impediment in me.. Do you think there may be a correlation with learning a foreign script to dyslexia?

+Jacob Paniagua Hi, Jacob. Thanks for your comment. If you already have a 504 plan in place, you may only want a formal evaluation for the purpose of obtaining specific accommodations for dyslexia in the plan. These accommodations could include more time for tests, the option to use audiobooks when reading is required, etc. The formal evaluation could help with getting the 504 modified for dyslexia, if you need that.

Hey, I have always had problems with numbers and infact I hate anything which has to with numbers and I also have a problem in understanding, memorizing and I have been a average kid all my life. For example, I read a paragraph 2 to 3 times to fully understand and memorize. I also have a problem in delivering what's in my mind. In my head it sounds great but I butcher it when it comes to delivery. But surprisingly I was good at spellings and reading sentences or paragraphs out loud, infact I loved it when teachers used to give me dictation tests and reading things out loud. So I'm really confused because I do have few of these symptoms but not all of them. Will getting diagnosed help?

i've been having some issues from a year or two now, im not trying to self diagnosed because i really don't know whats going on with me. Im 17 and some of this issues are - mixing words (both when they look alike or sometiemes even dont, they simply appear in the same sentence and I mix them), I think a lot on how some words are spelled, in fact when I take tests Im good in listening, but have a considerable amount of missespelling in writings. When Im reading for some reason I combine words, so if I have cat and hat my brain reads 'that' for example. and to this list add the fact that I have had maths problems my entire life, I mix up numbers or signs, its been a headache and has cost me lots of failed exams, but the thing is that I understand it, I know how it's done, but for some reason I mixed stuff and end up with a very different answer. im worried because no close relative thinks its a big deal and in not so long time Im taking a very important exam (the access to university), so I dont wanna screw it up with any of this. Idk, i hope someone can give me their opinion on this, id ve very grateful

But I've also noticed that I sometimes Jumble words when I speak or day things out of order. Sometimes when people talk to me everything they say goes straight over my head and when they’re finished talking, I have no idea what they were just talking about. It’s really annoying because it happens when my friends and family talk to me and in a lecture etc. Also when I read books/ articles etc... I have to reread each phrase more than 4 times to just try and understand what it means. It makes like really difficult sometimes! It’s weird because I was in all academic classes at school! Now I’m 21 and I’m seriously wondering if I have dyslexia?? What do I do?? It’s extremely frustrating not being able to read properly especially because I want to study to become a Paramedic. Also the other day I was in the car with my family and it took me a solid half an hour to send a text message that was about half as long as this message! It took me so long because I had to keep reading through it and every time my family would talk I’d have to start again because I got distracted so easily and I find it really hard to concentrate. Do I have dyslexia?

Blacksquareable Hi! Thanks for your comment. That's a great question. I am not dyslexic, but I have been a dyslexia tutor for a number of years. To get a diagnosis in the U.S., a person usually needs to find the right resources. For a formal evaluation, there are typically doctors and psychiatrists who will perform this. The International Dyslexia Association keeps a list of professionals who perform formal evaluations. In the UK, you might find the British Dyslexia Association helpful in this matter. For an informal evaluation, usually a dyslexia tutor is a great resource. We provide informal evaluations online for free at Dyslexia Connect, for those who are interested in knowing if their children (or they) show signs of dyslexia. That's a very interesting comment about ADHD and dyslexia. I plan on covering this in a future video. Thanks for the suggestion! Thanks again for your comment. +Michael Taylor That's a great question. No, there is no cure for dyslexia, due to it being a neurological disorder that affects the processing of written language. However, there are very effective tutoring options and strategies that can help dyslexic individuals learn to read, spell, and comprehend what they are reading. Also, there is no limit to what an individual with dyslexia can achieve! There are many dyslexic individuals who are extremely successful.

I think I may have it as I have a terrible attention span, extremely hard time focusing ,bad handwriting, can't spell words well at all one example is machine even though I spell it a decent bit and always have to Google it I still don't know how to spell it and rely on auto correct. I'm really REALLY unorganized and have to reread the same page like 4 times to get a basic understanding and I often skip words and alot of the time I have to take a few seconds to process something someone says that sounds like alot however I still can read comics pretty easy and compared to my peers I'm pretty smart but because I'm in cyber school I have to manage my time but I take really long in English and history which makes me work less in science and math which drags down my grades so I only get C's part of this is my anxiety probably (I was diagnosed with severe anxiety) however as a kid I still had most of these troubles. I'm just wondering if they seem like symptoms of it or if I may just have bad reading skills and if I end up getting a diagnosis should I just ask my doctor

I think my 8 year old son has dyslexia i’m not sure though. He is having trouble in school they even set up a meeting for me to go to, to discuss the problems. He often is really alert but once I have him read he is just not interested and starts yawning a lot. He was tested for ADD but he doesn’t have it. If he reads a sentence he will often skip a word or two and add other words that aren’t there at the end. He mixes up d and b, p and 9. The other day he was doing his homework he read the word “number” and on the next page the word “number was there again and he just couldn’t read it. He got so frustrated and cried he said he was stupid and it broke my heart into a million little pieces😭💔

Am I? Texting is a nightmare. I can not send a single text over 5 words long without skipping a word or battling with the spell correct. Im super slow at typing. When I try to sound out words I really have no idea sometimes. I also find my writing numbers and words that I'm copying, I copy out of order for example 3456 still would say 3456 when I'm done but I write the 3 then 5 then 6 and squeeze the 4. I also default the saying right when asked right or left. Then I think "ok I'm left-handed(well use both write, eat left, sports and guitar right hand) this is the hand I write with and its this side "no sorry i ment left" anyways I struggle with all the symptoms of Dyslexia but Im very coordinated is that enough enough to disqualify. I also freeze up and write words and letters completely wrong if someone is watching me write. It is so embarrassing. It took about an hour to write and proofread this comment and it still probably has typos,I won't see them it weird but this is my world. Ive attempted to write 100s of comments and it just so difficult to express what I'm trying to say I dont send them most of the time.

I believe I have dyslexia but never really bothered to learn it from an expert. Hand writing is a nightmare for me because it takes so much effort and concentration. Because of this my hand writing is terrible, some people find it unreadable. I write some letters capital in middle of words, constantly confuse b, p and d, forgot which side "g" faces, even forgot to write whole words and have difficulties writing whats on my mind. But when it comes to reading everything seems to be normal. I occasionally misread, skip a line or a word but everybody does that right? can't say the same thing for the math though. Im laughably bad at math. As you can guess school and university was agonizing for me. Because of my dyslexia and my country's education system. Most people in my country don't even know what dyslexia is and they just started to acknowladged it. But still I somehow manage to finish university. (although with terrible grades lol) I didn't even know what dyslexia is three years ago (this alone shows how equiped my country is against dyslexia) and now that I know everything. It all makes sense now. Back then I thought I was just bad or didn't try hard enough. But one thing I noticed about my dyslexia is that its not universal. Because Im more dyslexic against my native language Turkish. But less for English. Am I the only person experience this?

Also all through my life there’s things that school teaches u and u should know of heart like the months and alphabet or even when someone tells me what the big word mean I forget and I can never carry it in my brain like the next day or week I’ll forgot like example I watch a show and they say a word I don’t understand and my dad tells me what it means I won’t remember like I won’t pick it up. Also in school is it just me because I’m in applied in everything. high school and when I don’t do my hmw I will do bad but when I do my hmw everyday because that’s what I did I will understand and I did good but after a year or over the summer I will forget everything that I learn and I won’t even pick some things up also in math I’m very good when I do my hmw a lot but I still don’t know my times table. And agian over a year I don’t pick it up and my dad keeps telling me u won’t need that in life but u need to know tax times table words how to write read talk but I always forgot everything which makes me so sad because I know I I’m dyslexic I have to re teach things but I’m so old now which also makes me sad. And I’m wondering if I read books a lot and read the whole dictionary or read with a dictionary every night will I over come my dyslexic or u will forever have it and also get an English tutor plz answer.

Hello, I am a 13 year old child from Germany. I have recently looked into what dyslexia is and I have most of the symptoms. I have huge problems with grammar, reading out loud, remember something i JUST read, problems remembering something i just re-read, i have problems following and doing simple tasks that we were given in school, i have problems understanding tasks that were explained to me muiltiple times, i sometimes end up sitting there doing nothing because I understood nothing at all. I have problems with math and often have to use calculators or my fingers in order to get the task done. I have huge concentration problems and can't focus at all most of the time, I also stutter a lot when reading out loud and I tend to accidentally skip lines/words/pauses in my head and out loud. I'm not sure what to do, i have tried to talk to my mom about it but she simply shrugged it off with saying "You don't have it" without any proof nor did she explain why she thinks so. My friend suggested that I talk to a teacher that I trust so I can at least can an answer but I'm scared that I'm just stupid and not dyslexic, i would have wasted so much time, effort and everything. I don't want to know the answer but I also do..
