Signs and Symptoms of Dyslexia (Part 2) - Dyslexia Connect

More info on dyslexia signs and symptoms at www.dyslexiaconnect.com .
In this video, Peter continues his discussion of the signs and symptoms of dyslexia. Not every dyslexic students has the same dyslexia symptoms. One dyslexic student may display ten or fifteen common dyslexia symptoms, while another student may only display a few.
Since there are so many common signs of dyslexia, it should not be assumed that an individual is not dyslexic, simply because they do not display one specific symptom of dyslexia.
By learning the symptoms and signs of dyslexia, you can identify it when you see it.

I'm watching this video 5 years later. I hope you still read and write back. After watching your videos and learning more about dyslexia from my studies I realise that I am dyslexic too(no official diagnosis but I check most of the symptoms). I'm a teacher and I'm currently studying inclusive education and learning German. I've always had difficulties reading and this sometimes affects my confidence.

Thank you so much for this videos and others you have. I will be working with children and adolescents with learning disorders. I have ADHD, anxiety, and depression myself and it’s difficult at times to sit through videos, many are boring. But your videos are short, sweet, and to the point.

I got really good listening skills from passing through school from learning on the lesson. I got A/B+ in chemistry biology history... (physics was the only one I actually read). It also strengthened my intuition and improvisation. By 11th grade all my teachers thought I had read the homework while I had learned everything just from listening to them.

Thanks Peter, my reading comprehension is reasonable but only if I read the text aloud and sometimes highlight key phrases.

About the only thing I didn’t do was draw my letters backward....(though, in my estimation, I just mastered that quicker, since back then we wrote cursive, so It was easier to recognize when a letter doesn’t look right), that’s why no one knew I had dyslexia....because they thought that only the ones that.draw them backwards, were dyslexic. To this day....I still write ‘a’ in place of ‘I’. 3,6 and 9 might as well be the same number. If I have to read one of them out, I could say any one of them. If I’m not 100% concentrating when reading out numbers, at work...then 100% of the time I get corrected. I want to run and reading numbers is incredibly draining for me, even if It’s only .5% of each unit of work, that I do. When you were talking about the signs of dyslexia, I was so upset, because it brought me back to all my hardships of learning to read. I was labeled dumb, because I was guessing...same thing I replace words with it’s synonyms. And changed the endings of words. I probably would read a paragraph 20 times and still have no idea what it said. What surprised me was in my late 20’s, early 30’s I started reading out loud to my babies that turned toddlers that turned young children, there was no pressure to read, there were just story books, that I read out loud to them. No one was judging me. I started enjoying reading and even learned phonics for the first time in my life. Every word prior to that time was seemingly memorized by how it looked and not how it sounded. No wonder learning to read was so difficult, no wonder I couldn’t retain information, literally, every time I read, it was so taxing because I was trying to remember every word. I’m just about 50 now...I no longer worry so much about these errors and daily have to explain to first timers....I’m dyslectic. (In other words, I really telling them, don’t you dare think of me as dumb, because I’m not). Im beyond thinking of dyslexia as anything more than a gift. From someone painfully lacking in self-esteem due to my perceived disability, to now someone who is now so grateful for how I’m able to see/perceive things around me. Thanks for doing the work that you do. 😃

I sometimes read words or letters that aren't there or leave some out, like the other day I read sake instead of shake. Or I swap number in my head, I was telling my friend I was so happy because I got 37% on my test, what I meant was 73%. Or the other day I was in a test and I could not for the life of me read the word cannectedness, I could half read connect but I just couldn't put the whole word together. I've always hated books, I'm fine reading to myself most times if I'm not in a stressful situation, but when I try to read out loud I just can't get my braid and body to work together. In class if we need to read a book I would read my part in my head before it was my turn just to try and be more familiar with it so I don't make mistakes.

Hey there! Thank you for your video. I’ve recently stumbled upon your videos as I am trying to find answers about myself. For me, I’ve always hated reading. Words just take so much effort to process. I am constantly missing words, skipping lines, I have awful reading comprehension but my spelling and punctuation are great, mainly through effort on my side. Sometimes I add letters that aren’t there, other than that, I’ve always been a great student. Just awful any assignments that require a lot of reading. I am also suspected to have adhd by my doctor. What are your thoughts on this and is this something that I should pursue?

Hey, I fit in to most of these symptoms also my dad is dyslexic. I have trouble reading and pronouncing words, I often stutter and mostly avoid activities that involve reading. Sometimes I skip words when reading and mostly breez over sentences when reading. I don’t know if i’m dyslexic but I recently decided to look into it. I get really good grades and is a great student but language-arts has never been my strong suit.

I have hard time reading a book because when I read the book nothing goes through my head. I occasionally switch or add word and my spelling is kinda bad. I don't know if I should tell anyone because I'm afraid it's not dyslexia.
