Dyslexia and ADHD - Dyslexia Connect

Many students with dyslexia also have ADHD. How can we help these students make progress, and discern which symptoms come from each issue? For more information on this topic, as well as details about our online dyslexia tutoring program, please visit us at www.dyslexiaconnect.com .
Dyslexia and ADHD are often discussed together. The reason for this is that many students with dyslexia also have ADHD. Additionally, due to the natures of dyslexia and ADHD, the overlap in the symptoms of these two issues may lead to confusion.
One primary symptom of ADHD is difficulty concentrating. When it comes to reading, spelling and homework, a child with ADHD may avoid these things, simply because they have a hard time sitting down and focusing. They may be distracted by anything that is going on around them, and they may also engage in avoidance techniques, to try to bypass doing schoolwork. A child with dyslexia may do this, but for different reasons. For a child with dyslexia who has not received the proper instruction, reading and spelling may be so exhausting, overwhelming and difficult, that they attempt to completely avoid these activities. They may try to distract the adult who they are working with, so that they are not required to read. If a parent succeeds in sitting them down to do reading, the child may seem constantly distracted and be shifting around in their chair. In some cases, a child with dyslexia may even show physical aversion to reading and spelling, actually turning away from the book, spelling or homework that is placed in front of them.
For this reason, the symptoms of dyslexia and ADHD are sometimes confused. So, how do we tell them apart? The first step is to learn the symptoms of both dyslexia and ADHD in detail. For dyslexia, try checking out our series of videos on the symptoms of dyslexia. Once you know the symptoms, it will become much easier to recognize them and tell them apart. Another good strategy is to have your child read out loud to you. If a child only has ADHD, you may find that their reading is decent, once you are able to help them sit down and focus on the task at hand. However, if a child has dyslexia, you are going to notice the common signs of dyslexia as they read, such as skipping words, adding words that are not in the sentence, reading words incorrectly, and general trouble with reading accuracy.
If a child has both dyslexia and ADHD, it may be a bit more challenging to properly classify the symptoms. One good way to do this is to get the child the help that they need for their reading, by enrolling them in dyslexia tutoring. The dyslexia tutoring will help their reading and spelling improve, and in turn, it will become easier to recognize which symptoms are specifically related to ADHD, and not dyslexia. In addition, a good dyslexia tutor is skilled at interpreting the symptoms of both dyslexia and ADHD, because they likely have experience working with students who have both. So, you can ask a dyslexia tutor for help in determining which symptoms are related to each issue.

I really love this video and it explains a lot about my condition, I have been diagnosed as dyslexic and I would say my primary problem is that I cannot process information as fast as other people On the other hand I have not been officially diagnosed as ADHD but I believe strongly that I do have this condition but need to look further into it To anyone who suffers from these conditions well know that you can achieve anything a person who does not have these conditions as I have graduated as an engineer and have worked for over two years in this field

I was diagnosed with ADHD a couple years back now I think I might have dyslexia too. I always thought up until now that dyslexia only meant seeing letters backwards.

I have dyslexia, possibly adhd still waiting to b tested on that. My problem isn't so much the reading and writing, it's the memory im sometimes im unable to understand info or retain info I forget. Sometimes I JUST DON GET IT. To top that off iv also got days dyscalculus (maths) but I do have a unique way of thinking than anybody else I find a different solutions another way to solve problems eg. I found a solution in maths, my tutor is a mathematician with photo graphic memory. Knows all different ways to a question, I came up with an answer to a problem, she said to the class this is how a dyslexic thinks, & that she hadnt thought of that, in the way I did. & At the same time, she also help me 2recognise what ability I had, dyslexias have unique abilities, its not all that bad having dyslexia and dyscalculus. she gave me confidence saying that. Thank u for vid god bless u all x

Thank you for the video I’m 28 and have now been diagnosed with ADHD . However I have always known I have dyslexia ( reading age of a nine-year-old ) in addition to this, I have always known I have Irland syndrome as well . I was so lucky to be with a teaching assistant as a one-to-one all the way through school. I don’t understand how the adhd was missed as the teaching assistants were always putting me back to task in lessons ( I did not read or write anything during the school day except in my special classes )

I think in every country in the world should have assisted technology for adult people with dyslexia help read and write mandatory. In school, All kind of libraries, courthouses, State House, government buildings, trade schools, organizations that help you find jobs, Banks, credit union colleges. I believe we got far in with helping dyslexia people but not enough for the adults that's dealing with it everyday.

My teen has both and I always thought ADHD teens were naughty! Turns out, I was wrong. As I said on another one of your videos my daughter loves reading, actually obsessed with it, she is so creative and feels like she enters that world when she reads, also great at maladaptive daydreaming. Make her learn something she has no interest in or watch a movie she doesn't want to see then heeellll no! Not going to happen. She has destroyed her bed from doing this jumping thing she does when she's reading while sitting up in bed...annoys me so much! How can I stop her doing that?

  • @DyslexiaConnect

Thanks for your comment. Regarding the jumping on the bed, you could try providing her with a fidget (a bean bag, squeeze ball, etc.) to use while she is reading. Teachers sometimes use these with their students who have trouble sitting still.
