How to test a Fuel Level Sending Unit with Digital Ohm Meter

This Video explains how to test Fuel Tank Sending Units using the Ohm setting on a Digital Multimeter.
During the Video is mentioned that the readings will vary in between different makes and models, even the way the resistance changes, meaning that in some models the resistance decreases as the fuel level increases, not the case on the fuel tank sending unit that was used for the Video.
In conclusion: This Video can be used as a reference regardless of make or model once you have obtained the resistance specs for your particular application.

good vid! I have an 02 ford explorer giving me a fuel computer data error which apparently points to a bad float in the sending unit, so I'll try this tomorrow to check for inconsistencies in the resistence

update! It sorta worked - the fuel sender had been sitting in its own filth for 8 years without use, so I pulled out a wire brush to scape the yuck off all the metal parts, then modified the fuel level sensor with tiny cable ties after cleaning it (the metal piece had too much opportunity to come loose, so I tied it to its bracket). Still couldnt get a proper reading, but it was way more conductive than before, so dropped it back in to test and my fuel gauge is back, with the fuel computer error gone! Thank you!

@Terminology! make sure you take a mental note of the floats location when you lift it out of the tank - theres not a lot of room in there and if its caught on anything it'll either error out, or the floats lever might be flexed off its guide which will also give that error. I pulled it apart, cleaned it all to new then resoldered the wires (after breaking one accidentally). Saved about $650 here

Hi, if the ceramic resistor board is faulty, is there any chance of repairing it? Or only replacement is the way?

Good teaching! But how do I know if the gauge is accurate? I mean, maybe the resistance is smooth from full to empty, but how do I know what the resistance number ought to be for example 1/2 full?

Thanks very simple - now all I need to do is adapt the after market fuel pump to the electrical fittings lol one thing I dislike about after market parts..

you can get a reed switch 240 ohms empyty 33 ohms full nothing moves but float magnet the come diff lengths in 1/2 increments so measure depth of tank deduct 1/2 in when ordering mount standerd 5 hole

My 2017 Lexus nx 200t only reads from full when I fill it...and once I get to just a hair under half tank thats it...it stays there till I fill it up past that mark again. Not acting weird or funky it just won't go any lower even if run it damn near empty...whats your best guest? I'm thinking a bad float its sticking should I just change the sending unit out or look elsewhere for the problem? Thanks

Poor idea to put a variable resistor or 2 down in the fuel with who knows what is in the gasoline to contaminate the contacts. DUH Anyone who works on these ever wonder why the contacts turn brown or orange over time??
