    I have 7 puppies and many depend on me to train them to search for explosives .. We have war here in Syria .. It often happens that car bombs explode on the roads and in times of crowding .. There are no other dog trainers here .. and you are the only one Who explained everything honestly and free of charge without paid courses .. Thank you .. You dont know what this means to us .. Thank you again

    That was so cute when she laid infront of it again! She definitely deserved that reward! Thank you for actually showing you teaching in real time rather then after your dog already knows how to do it. It shows that it takes time and mistakes happen also what to do when it does. I really appreciate your videos!

    Hey Nate, your channel is by far the best dog training channel I've found (and I've found a lot of them). The structure of your videos and how well you explain things are really what set you above the rest. I've watched all your videos now while taking notes, and plan on rewatching as I work through training my new puppy in 3 weeks. Do you recommend any other channels/sources of info to compliment yours? Currently working through Michael Ellis' huge channel but he doesn't really have any structure or order to his videos.

    Thanks, Chafik K! I really appreciate that. I think Michael Ellis is a great source as well. He has some really solid course at Leerburg online university. I also really like Forrest Micke's heelers toolbox. Most of the trainers with Leerburg have the same training style as mine. You will hear a lot of repeated info, but you'll also learn a lot as well. Thanks again for supporting my channel, I really appreciate it! 😁🙏🐶🐕

    Just watched a few of your videos back to back - brilliant. This one made me laugh. My boy is a pain in the butt with this. The trainer has to take him out of the room every time. He watches where the box is moved - or where the cloth is placed. As much as I try to confuse by pretending to put it in each - he knows every time :(

    I’m really enjoying your series on scent detection. In the past I did searchers periodically trying to find somebody teaching a course just like this one. I will be using it to teach Phoenix to find my misplaced phone and glasses and a couple of other frequently mislaid items. Would you recommend I do the training out in the open like you’re demonstrating in this video? Or do you think it would be more ideal to practice/train in our actual living environment?

    When can we expect the next scent detection video? My pup has been practicing a lot and is very excited to see the next progression. Also do you have any tips for keeping a dog on the treadmill. I used the climb command to get her on it and then free shaping and she was walking within minutes. She jumps on the treadmill every time we go near it. With winter coming I would like to ride the stationary bike next to her, without needing to shovel treats in her the entire time. Other videos I've watched involved forcing a scared dog on until they got exhausted and stopped fighting. I really enjoy your proactive learning style so that it becomes the dogs choice to perform an action. So I would like her to choose to remain on the treadmill in the absence of food if thats possible. I was just experimenting with the free shaping and was surprised how fast she learned what I wanted. Thanks and keep grinding your videos are great!

  • @NateSchoemer

    @NateSchoemer

    Thanks! I plan on making a video on treadmill training. I treat it as a climb command, first getting the dog comfortable with it. Then I make sure the dog has been trained on leash pressure. When that's completed, I'll start showing the dog the treadmill with it on a low setting (the dog doesn't need to be on the treadmill for this step). Then I'll have the dog on the treadmill with it on a very low setting and I'll slowing increase the speed as the dog becomes comfortable with the current speed. I use the leash to show the dog how to maintain the proper speed. Lastly, I reinforce it the same way I would any other stay command. I hope that helps and thanks for supporting the channel. :)

    I would love a medical alert scent training series. I know how to get and handle my samples. I am just confused about changing scents, low blood sugar, high blood sugar, low blood pressure, and tachycardia events. Also, I want the nose press alert. Not the pawing as I have extreme neurological pain. I was told that the nose press is a harder indicator to train and transfer from the items. I would love your input on this. Also, would it be better to train the scent on my body first, then a scent wheel, and then generlize it to different items like the center block, cans, and boxes. Or should it always be generalized on my person, then added in different locations and skip the containers. Sorry, I am really confused about this. I have heard too many ways to do this. Now I need to know the correct way. Please help.

    This might sound like a really silly question with an obvious answer.. But do you need to have nailed obedience before you should start doing something like search? And do you think a 1.5 year old with no formal training before is capable of learning search? We rescued a Mal and have had her for 6 weeks and have been binge watching a lot of your videos and implementing what we're learning. She's great but sometimes will take longer to obey a command. By the way, thanks for all these amazing videos. All your other videos have helped SO much!

  • @NateSchoemer

    @NateSchoemer

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! I'm happy the videos have been helpful. No, you don't need obedience before starting scent work. However, you do want the dog conditioned to the markers. And yes, you can train a dog that is 1.5 years to do scent work training. Cheers! :)

    Hello Nate - love your posts. I have 2 quick questions: 1) We live in Houston - it gets really hot here. I take my Malinois out to play with her ball about an hour before dark. She gets in 4 or 5 50 yard sprints and she's toast - she goes and lays down in the grass. How much time should I work with her given the heat? 2) When I got my Malinois, she was 3 years old. She's pushing 5 years old now. I just started using your techniques and she's making progress! But, at that age, is it too late to attempt to train her on the basics? Like - come when called. Lay down on command - not pull me down the street when on a leash? Thank you so much if you get a chance to reply.

  • @NateSchoemer

    @NateSchoemer

    Thanks, Marshal! For the first question; If you're doing scent detection, you have to stop once the dog starts to get tired. It's more difficult for them to pick up the scent when they are breathing hard through their mouth. For the second question; yes, you can still teach the basics to an older dog. Start with the basic obedience series. Start with episode one and work your way through. Here is a link to the playlist for your convenience: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZdsyrptnKatmbw.html I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. 😁🙏🐶🐕

    You can also try using toys. A common technique that we like to use to correct a lack of food drive is food deprivation. For this you will want to use mealtime as a training time. Bring the dog out and offer food to train, if the dog is not interested, no big deal, put the food away and try again at dinner. Again, if the dog is not interested, put the food away and try again the next day. Continue to do this until your dog is willing to work for the food. Be sure not to give the dog any food between training. The dog has to know that he will only get food that he works for. I’ve used this technique on dozens of dogs and it’s worked every time.

    @@NateSchoemer I don't know much about obedience etc, i just walk a mates supposedly 'loopy' and 'reactive' dog and know if im calm and she's by my side and not in front, she's fine with me... walks on totally loose leash! Im teaching her to go between my legs like u showed and shes so quick to learn its amazing and she seems to enjoy it. But as soon as her owners take her back she pulls like crazy, barks her head off and attacks other dogs etc... im trying to gently tell them they cause her behaviour but it's a sensitive thing... I try not to feel too much empathy for the dog because she's not mine and I wonder if it's really unfair on her... but then at least she gets walks with me and she gets to be calm and to do agility type stuff. What's your view if u don't mind me asking (PS I used to free run a friends GSD guide dog. ..she also pulled like mad with my friend, but not me after a couple of walks and a short discussion .. just stopping when she pulled seemed very quickly to teach her that's not ok.
