My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

6:10 that went from an invitation to play by Auggie (play bow with wagging tail) to uncool reaction by the bulldog SO FAST. Auggie picked up on it, I didn't. I only saw the reaction and realized after the fact that there was something going on. Amazing how quick these dogs recognize small cues.

A fight can start between dogs because of a little sideways look, a little sneaky lip curl, wagging the tail in the wrong direction, stiffening one leg ... their communication can be very subtle, more than ours.

Such a great video. I've had great success with horses and dogs with that big HEY. I call it my horse voice, but it works great with dogs who are about to fight also.

It's our country holler across the 20-acre pasture to bring your horse in especially when I want to stop the old cranky mare from kicking the pony... it's a Serious holler...

A tip to the camera guy: We can hear what he says when you focus the camera on the dogs, but we can't see the dogs behaviour when you focus on him. Try to keep focus on dogs so we can link what he says to the dogs behaviour. Thanks for the content!

Having had bulldogs for 14 years now, they do get rough with play and that has to be corrected behavior. Also they tend to grapple for lack of a better term than most other dogs I've seen. Just found your channel and really like what you show. Consistent, ongoing correction and praise for good behavior.

@@dmj2020 Yep! Boxer parent here too. They play so rough together which I guess is okay from what Joel is saying on these videos but they then struggle taming down the behavior on their own with other dogs and breeds. I’m working hard on trying to properly socialize my five month old boxer pup to be able to know what play is appropriate with what dogs. It’s not an easy task 🤣

This is so true! I was walking my GSD 1-year-old in an off-road area, meaning off leash, and we suddenly came across an owner and his dog, also off leash. Because my boy is rather timid, and therefore sometimes aggressive, I immediately put the lead on and allowed them to meet. I also took a lot of cues from the owner. He was chill, had great control of his dog, and the meeting commenced without incident. The understanding/confidence of the owner is key.

many people aren't even aware of the body language of another human being so for people to recognize good/bad dog behavior is sadly pretty poor. some of us are more keen to cues but this is a skill that can be developed! I love this! I really appreciate you as a trainer recognizing what you can do better as you're teaching!

The more I watch your videos the more I like how you think. Your timing "mark" is spot on and the dogs know it. You are communicating to them exactly how they know how to learn and your results are astounding. I have been around the block a time or two and it is obvious to me you know what you are doing. You have a talent and a love for it and above all, with your videos, editing and explaining you deliver an education. I always come away having learned another golden nugget. Well done~

I love how you point out the differences between correct and incorrect dog behavior, and explain what they mean. We had our current dogs effectively dumped on us (family member needed to get rid of them, and we took them as a favor). Neither I nor my husband had much dog experience. In retrospect, we shouldn't have taken the dogs, but I didn't know better. We just let them exist in our large backyard for several years, using them to scare away wildlife and alert us of trespassers. Over the past couple months I've been trying to figure out how to "train" them, and I quickly figured out that there were some basic things I didn't know: 1) How to interpret dog body language. 2) What behaviors I *want* out of the dogs. 3) How I need to act around the dogs. Your videos are answering those questions and more. Thank you!

So many of Beckman's videos give me "ah-ha" moments with my rescue dog and this one definitely opened my eyes to some of his behavior. I had no idea that scratching the grass after peeing had a meaning behind it!

my female doberman is 9 months and extremely friendly, been taking her to dog parks nearly daily since 4 months of age & shes always the one to find a couple dogs to play with but when that other random dog that gets jealous or comes to confront her, i never really knew what to do but know with the assertive hey! i learned a ton, thank you sir.

the big German sherpherd he said was just a half grown whining puppy.

My Old English Bulldog have learned to play soft or more rough, depending on the dog he plays with. This needed a lot of training, correcting on time and praise on time. With time he learned to know when he can play rough or soft. But i never loose sight of him when he plays.

My greyhound is getting there. Initially highly dog reactive from miles away, awful on the lead. Now able to intro to multiple breeds using balanced training. His prey drive and dominance is very intense. I was wondering if you could do a video on reactivity when dogs are running. It seems he sees red when other dogs break into anything more than a trot when he’s off lead. Great progress so far from where we started!

Seems like Auggie is a pup who wants to play and not want to get dominated.

yeah he’s pretty confident. he simply lacks follow through, but that’s fine, healthy even.

Whenever I play my you tube or my radio too loud, Lilly looks at me like mommy you’re waking me up and I can’t sleep or rest well.

Yeah they're some of the best but only if they're bred and raised well. Badly bred and raised shepherds can be some of the worst dogs.

@@johnandmorehb3422 That's not a true working line GSD but a show line GSD for dog shows. You're talking about those dog show GSDs with a bad angled back, and hip and elbow dysplasia due to overbreeding them for confirmation as show and pet dogs that aren't bred for working anymore. Most people can't even handle a dominant true Eastern European working line GSD with a straight back and high prey drive bred for real work.

I LOVE AUGIE!!! I just got in a dog resort/daycare and I'm learning so much! Thought I wanted a bull dog. They r not ez!

What did you mean at 5:33 when you said “oh that’s good”? I see that a lot and also 13:30 behaviors at dog parks. I don’t know if my dog is scared or not ( kind of running away like Auggie was at times). I’m terrible at reading dog body language but want to learn.

Good dog stuff, really like what you are doing. I question if he could be trusted forever. Bulldogs are really stubborn. He might be a good candidate for muzzel until or if he actually changes his 'instinctive type of behavior'. Owners may not be able to give him those type of corrections.

Bulldog is so persistent. He is determined to mount Auggie. And Auggie so knows it and doesn't want it to happen. Hopefully Baxter gives it up and just plays. Dog behavior is fascinating stuff!

You need to follow through and correct the dog for blowing you off. He taught the dog his hey has some meaning to it. Your hey has no meaning to the dog. It either doesn't respect you or doesn't know what you expect of it because you haven't bothered to teach the meaning.

@@notifysend1015 this is my problem as well. My dog doesn't listen when amped up or excited, so I am stepping up to using firmer corrections to get his attention. This is my fault for not figuring this out sooner and implementing it.

Thank you so much for the very informative video! I understand everything you say very well. My question: How can I train this in reality? I do not have other dogs that I can just add to my 1,5 years old neutered male. He loves playing BUT when he is off leash (and if I allow it) he will run up to other dogs at full speed and make them uncomfortable. How do I behave in a situation like this e. g. on the beach? He is too far away too quickly and also o focused on the run up to the other dog that I think I cannot get to him. Side info: Recall and everything else, also off leash walking in busy streets, works perfectly fine 99% of the time. Thank you!

He has a video on progressing to off-leash walking which could be helpful! He recommends a ‘fakeout’ leash removal, which you could use. Your dog will think he’s off leash and might go to charge up to another dog but you’ll still be in control and be able to give a correction. Obviously I’m no trainer but just a thought that came to my head 😊

Omg just like my bulldog I need someone like you. Petco graduated him, because he had to be in a class by himself.

I'm curious. If you correct the run up/hump can they be deterred from playing and interacting all together? I have a large dog who plays but shows some dominance. I want to correct it but at the same time don't want to put it in his head he can't play at all.

Does the punishment for the other dog create a negative association for the German Sheppard?

Where do I email you or how do I get a question about my 5 month old lab answered or an opinion on what's going on from you rather ? I have my theory then a couple fb commenters who say they a dog trainers have theirs and I tried to give their theory a shot but what they said was happening my gut says is wrong . Lol because I have looked it up and it is in my dogs situation that they only got a tiny bit of the story . It's driving me crazy now not knowing what is fact . I'd like to get your theory .

AH yes, Using "HEY" as a correction word... now every time the owners meet a friend the dog will think hes doing something wrong because hes going to recognize the word.

This is exactly my newly adopted 2 year old untrained Aussie girl. She had 2 fights with my old dog outside in my presence already. Now, I am paying very close attention to all her movements and signals. I still have to take them out together 2 to 3 times a day. But I am in full control preparing for the worst.

So as an owner of the non dominant dog, should i be concerned that the dominant dog making my dog afraid to play with others or teaching her to be aggressive?

A few people commenting on what they perceive to be a negative focus I.e. marking the dog’s unwelcome behaviour as opposed to hyping up the good. I had my friendly but polite Springer Collie cross at the park the other day, and she was nipped on the nose with zero warning by a French Bulldog - I’d much rather that this misbehaviour had been marked in this way, in the moment, rather than the owner’s passive acceptance and sheepish acknowledgement of their dog being a ‘grumpy little shit’, (or the fairly abstract idea of rewarding positives).

Videos are good, wish the camera was focused on the dogs more, like I know who is talking… “Did you see that?” No, we didn’t…

The intro to Baxter sounded like his character is that of the infamous "Bubba" in prison. My thoughts are that these types of training techniques could/should be incorporated into the criminal reform programs...lol

"They want to live in this world." What a brilliant observation. I am lucky enough to live on a large piece of land that is entirely fenced and isolated. But my "meatball" could not interact normally with anyone outside our habitat. We can't go to the dog park. We can't go to a pet store. She only exists here. However, I am not sure that she will ever be able to be outside this world. I don't want to expose anyone else's dog to her.

Is dog grass scratching always a sign of dominance? My large pittie always scratches after he poops and sometimes when he pees, but I have never thought of him as dominate. I really don't take him around other dogs so I don't know about him being dominate with them.

To some degree it is, he’s trying to spread his scent more. But it’s not at a a bad thing.

My dog wants me to pet her while she’s sleeping and also she loves to keep her paw on my arm and she likes to keep her leg on my arm. She has some mommy issues and some new dog overstimulation issues but overall she’s doing great!❤

Would you use the same method with a one year old Belgian Malinois that try to hump members of the family and barks aggressively and even folding the ears back with rapid high tail wag when being pushed away and down whilst getting a loud -hey! -stop! ? Distracting the dog is almost impossible at that point and he keeps going for 2 hours at least until he is totaly exhausted.

My son's name is Augie (August). Such a cool name. 😊

My female Boston is very alpha and shows the same behaviors. I agree with your methods and you have to keep vigilant and be more alpha😊

No alpha is using his/hers position to be horrible to another being. This is not an alpha attitude, this is plain rude dog.

My dog likes marking and scratching the grass after he pees and the one dog I tried introducing him to he humped. But with people he's very docile. I'm still learning him and about how to be a dog owner- I've only had him a little over a month and he's 5. Should I stop his marking and only let him pee in designated areas?

That's nothing. He is not so dominant to the point of pinning dogs down or attacking dogs of the same sex. I had a male Weimaraner which was like that. There is another way of managing those type of dogs.

My daughters 4 year old Aussie shepherd has started humping random black dogs much bigger than him. He has never really bothered with other dogs in the dog parks. He starts by lowering his head slightly and very calmly walks towards the dog then, very casually he goes along the dogs side and subtly pushes sideways - after a couple of times of him doing this I know the the signals so can stop it before it happens - But I have not been able to stop the behaviour. He is not normally aggressive and this does not seem particularly aggressive- he always picks pretty chill dogs and owners and has no problem when I pull him off or stopping it before it starts. When pick up his leash to walk him away he walks nicely my side. I have had him dragging a line with the loop cut off since this started. I also have 4 others dogs and our walks were always very calm and peaceful but now I have to be constantly scanning for large black dogs.

To have trainers in different states?

I wish your camera person would keep the camera on the dogs while you narrate the body language. It is hard to see the body language when the camers is swinging around to get the shot but late.

My bulldog has started refusing to walk the way I say to go, he also humps anyone that comes near us apart from children, he is so stubborn, do you have any videos for that?

How did he play with Prince?

The GSD yelped for no reason at all as the Bulldog chased in the play and the Bulldog was yelled at for seemingly nothing.

"Seemingly nothing." I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he may have seen posturing in Baxter that made the GSD nervous. It's possible that he was erring on the side of caution because he yelped, but either way the result is that Baxter's interactions with other dogs is subject to the man and that it's not okay to dip whatever he wants. Joel is the professional dog trainer that gets results .
