Coloring is a wonderful activity to promote attention, fine motor, visual motor, and bilateral coordination skills! This video goes over four simple strategies to help your child learn to color inside the lines. Note - if coloring inside the lines is too difficult or tedious for your youngster, then let them have fun scribbling instead (we don't want coloring to become a chore!) Enjoy!

    What age range would be the most receptive to start teaching this skill? You say preschool/toddler, but that is pretty broad. At what age should your child be able to do this?

  • @TheOTGuide

    @TheOTGuide

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Kaila! Great question. Children should aim to get practice with this skill as early as possible, I'd say between 3-4, and will continue to hone this skill in school! Many kids get proficient coloring inside the lines by Kinder, however it's definitely a very broad range since every child develops at their own unique pace. I work with first graders and second graders who continue to struggle with this skill. The more practice, the better! (Except try not to harp on it, we don't want our kids to associate coloring with work!) Thank you for your question!

    I have a 6 year old who doesnt like to colour in the lines - she kind of does scribble colouring - she wants to do it really fast almost like its a chore and doesnt cut out neatly as well - I dont know what to do to help - its almost as if she cant be bothered with colouring carefully. She also is having trouble with cutting. She is being negatively scored by this - how do I get her to want to be more precise with her colouring and cutting?

  • @TheOTGuide

    @TheOTGuide

    7 ай бұрын

    Hi and my apologies for the delay! Thanks for reaching out! It's not uncommon for 6-year-olds to show varying preferences and skills in coloring and cutting. Scribble coloring and less precise cutting are part of the learning process, and it's not something to be worried about in itself. To encourage more precision, try turning these activities into fun games. Use coloring books with larger outlines, stickers, or stencils for an enjoyable experience. For cutting, start with simple shapes and use safety scissors designed for kids. Positive reinforcement is key-praise her efforts and celebrate small achievements. If concerns persist, consulting with an occupational therapist could provide personalized strategies. Remember, every child develops at their own pace. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I hope this helps!!
