Techniques to Teach your Toddler How to get Dressed!

Getting dressed is an important developmental milestone for children, but it can be quite daunting! Learning to get dressed will not only help your child build independence, but it will also help them develop fine motor skills, language skills, problem-solving, and gross motor skills. This video goes over the best techniques to teach your child how to take off and put on their shirt and pants. Key takeaways include the following: 1) Teach undressing first 2) Use loose-fitting clothing 3) Use shorts before pants 3) Start with lots of physical prompts + support and gradually fade 4) Praise effort + success. Enjoy!

  • @TheOTGuide

    Hey Melissa!! Thank you so much for watching my video and your great question. Most people get help from an OT through a doctor's referral because their child isn't meeting their developmental milestones. Alternatively, school staff might notice a problem and start the IEP process with the school psychologist and special education team there. While I don't know your son, in general, a preschooler struggling to don/doff their coat doesn't set off any alarm bells to me, especially if that's the only concern! Next time you have a doctor's appointment, you can mention your concerns and see what the doctor has to say :) Thank you again for watching my video and let me know if you have any other questions!! -Dana

    I'm so glad this video has been helpful! :) Long sleeve shirts are definitely trickier than short sleeve, but fortunately the motor movements are exactly the same. I recommend having your daughter first practice with an over-sized long sleeve shirt to make it easier, and provide hand-over-hand assistance for a while to guide her movements. • @TheOTGuide

    @TheOTGuide

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Salsha! Thank you so much for your question. This is a very common issue! I recommend experimenting with different materials depending on your child's preferences (some prefer all cotton, others prefer more nylon-like materials, but ultimately you want something super soft). My next suggestion would be to trial different types of bras. Bralettes are similar to training bras but they are a bit longer and more loose-fitting, and I've found they can be significantly more comfortable. Here's one I found that could be worth trying: www.spanx.com/lounge-hooray-bralette?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=CjwKCAjwz6_8BRBkEiwA3p02VQqNo4-PLurY7E064tQ0rcAQyK50HNg3Dysew11KfekMx9lBAuqBGRoCr_oQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

    Hey Ashley! First off, I am so sorry my response is so delayed! It sounds like your youngster has quite the funny and playful spirit. Having your child learn to get dressed independently is wayyyyy harder if they aren't innately interested in the activity, so props to you for being so patient. Off the bat, I'd say just stick w/praising and encouraging any type of effort on your toddler's end or even reward him with actual tangibles if he helps you (even if his effort is VERY minimal)! That way, he associates helping mom put his shirt on with positive rewards, like a sticker, tickles, or a treat! Simultaneously, I'd pull back some of your support (very, very subtly so it doesn't cause a meltdown). For example, instead of you pulling up his pants, put his hands in the correct position and encourage him to do it, possibly even cheer him on! If he still doesn't help you out any more, I'd take a little break and not worry about it if possible. He may not be ready to learn this skill and there's no use in it stressing either of you out - he has plenty of years to learn how to get dressed :)

    At what age do you think little ones can start learning this? My 19 month old really wants to dress herself, and can do some of these bits but not all of them, and it feels like she's not actually capable of dressing herself but I could be underestimating her.

  • @TheOTGuide

    @TheOTGuide

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's so exciting she wants to get dressed by herself! Definitely take advantage of her enthusiasm and give her lots of daily practice and encouragement. At 19 months, I definitely wouldn't expect her to be independent (Kindergarten is when most children are expected to dress themselves independently) but she could get efficient at some of those prerequisite steps (like taking off her shirt, pants, socks, etc.) Ultimately, I'd say follow her lead - if she wants to try putting on a pair of shorts by herself, set her up for success by starting her off seated with her feet in the holes, and then see if she pulls them up independently. Even a failed attempt is great because she is problem-solving :)

    Hi there! Thank you so much for your question. Front/back/left/right are complex concepts for little ones (many kids don't master their left and rights til they're 7 or 8!) That being said, instead of using those directional words, I recommend doing hand over hand to help your child put on and take off their clothing (meaning you put their hands on top of their hands and guide them into the correct position, instead of telling them the position). thanks for this video -very helpful. One thing I am having trouble with is resistance. My toddler is 22 months and doesn't like learning the skill of dressing and undressing. Should I just wait? Anyone else have this problem? I also find even when he attempts to pull up his pants, he can't get it over his bum by himself and gives up.

  • @TheOTGuide

    @TheOTGuide

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Carrie! Thank you for your question. Resistance is a really tough one!! At 22 months, your kiddo is on the younger side (typically kids start to learn how to undress themselves anywhere between 22-30 months) so it may just be that it's a really hard skill and he gets overwhelmed by it (hence the resistance.) For now, I'd just have him focus on removing clothing - teaching him to yank off his socks and maybe pull down his shorts/pants. If you notice frustration, see if you can help him just enough by putting his hands in the right place and guiding his movements. Make sure to reward with lots of praise and encouragement and maybe even a preferred toy! You got this mama!

  • @TheOTGuide

    @TheOTGuide

    Also, when teaching to pull up his pants, instead of putting his hands on either side to pull up, you can have him put one hand in front and one behind to help clear his tush! Does that make sense? But I think I'd focus on undressing for now :)

    @TheOTGuide

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey there!! My apologies for the delay. This behavior is very, VERY common and is often just outgrown with time once kids become more socially aware. In the meantime, my tips would be to somehow incentivize putting on clothes. For example, maybe every time he tolerates his clothing you reward him with something - tickles, a cool sticker, play time, snuggles, etc. Alternatively, maybe he could play a role in picking out his outfits! Does he love any cartoons or characters? You could get him clothing that features his favorite things. I like to provide my students with two choices - i.e. "do you want these socks? Or these ones?" and then have them pick. This empowers them and makes them feel like they are in charge! I hope this was helpful, please let me know if you have any more questions! (I will respond quicker next time, I promise!) Thanks for watching my video. -Dana
