How to Teach Close Reading in your Classroom

Learning how to teach close reading can definitely be a little bit daunting. I remember when I first started researching how to teach close reading, I didn't have a clue what it was, how to teach close reading, or even when to do a close reading lesson. I was very confused.
But, what I did know is that learning how to teach close reading was going to be an integral part of my small group guided reading instruction to help my students become critical, contextual readers.
The best part was that when I integrated teaching close reading during my small group reading instruction, my students made tremendous gains in their reading growth.
So, take some time and really dive in deep to this training on how to teach close reading because I believe it will be an extremely beneficial instructional methodology to implement during your small group guided reading time.

Hello Anna: Thank you for this helpful guide to implementing close and guided reading. I wonder how you schedule your EASE and writing instruction around this program schedule. I teach in a French immersion school so I have 5 ninety minute English literacy periods per week and struggle to fit everything in. Might you have a post or document that I may use as a guide for integrating and scheduling all of the components together? Thank you for your ongoing instruction, Tara

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this! Quick question: Are the students reading aloud (like they would in guided reading) or do you read the text to them and allow them to annotate while you're reading?

Hi, I didn't catch where you mentioned how you do your first read. Do you read it aloud to the students while they highlight and annotate or do they read independently and do this on the first read?
