I adopted my 3 girls 7 months ago, after much patience on all sides we have an understanding. If they go to one part of their cage I can lay my hand in front and they'll climb up...mostly! We do this every day to reaffirm our bond and there's always veggies involved 😊 love this video, the platform is inspired!

That is so cute! That is true about respecting they personality. My oldest guinea pig we adopted got used to us very quickly and we believe she was more used people before. She doesn't run when we show up and most times comes to use when we are near the cage. She will let us pet while she inside the cage if she is eating and she loves lap time (although she does not care for being picked up). The baby is waaaaay more skittish. She runs every time we come near the cage (although she is getting out more when she sees me during breakfast time) and she comes out to take food out of my hands. I found a trick that works well with my girls to pick them up without chasing: I take the hideys away and come from the side with both hands keeping a bit of a distance. With one of the fingers I start caressing them and by the time I get them they are calmer. The older one still squirms but the baby doesn't. It was very challenging getting the baby before since she is so fast! Thanks for your videos!! They help me a lot!

Love your lessons. We have a herd of five girls and have learned several things from you. This just confirmed my idea to move their home up from the floor. I hadn't thought of the easy access door to let them feed like that. Right now their tamest moment is when we sit with our leg alongside their home and ask them to put their front paws on our leg to get greens. They will also put their front paws on our hands/wrists to feed. Only one of them (the youngest) hops up completely to our lap, and "tolerates" being held briefly. We've refocused our training to mimic this video with some of the handling you showed.

I also find holding the piggie every time you feed them veggies gets them excited about your hands and or being picked up after a while. I also will give them thier veggies and then place my hand flat on the bedding next to them while they eat, not touching them just next to them so they get use to the size of my hand and it's presence. But there are also piggies with personalities who resist you and your have no matter how much you try. That thier personality just fights ever getting comfortable with you. I have one piggie whom I have had for a couple years and most of the time she will run.

With my younger piggie, who's an Aby, I have tried all these techniques and more, she simply will not let me pet her while in the cage or pick her up. She knows her name, she comes to get a treat and will take it from my hand or nibble it if I hold really tight. On rare occasions I've been able to extend a finger for quick nose scratch while I hold her treat but she'll quickly let go and run away. The only way I can get her out of the cage for cuddles is to corner her in a bed (or picket on a guinea dad liner). There are times that I've had to use my bamboo back scratcher to guide her to where I want her to go. The thing is tho, once I've caught her and I have her, she's just as snuggly as my other girl. She even gives kisses. She's just going to be a crazy Aby who makes my life difficult.

Scotty, this is so nice. I do though have a concern about the top of the ramp that has a metal piece protruding at the top. Looks like an easy fix, can you wrap and connect the the two metal pieces with electrical tape? Seems like an injury can occur with the way it currently is. Fyi I used a plastic rain gutter with an inside lip for my ramp, I then used a nail/screw to make holes at the top, then cable tied to the cage. I used a skinny somewhat burlapish mat from the 99c store, but and it slipped right into the inside lip of the rain gutter.

I found a guinea pig on my offer up site and he was only 15$ with the cage and food and hay and water bowl. I seen this post for a week I did my research and found out that they have to have a friend they have to have a way bigger cage kaytee is not good hay. They eat veggies. They live for a long time guinea pig treats are trash. They are prey animals. All in a week I found out this much stuff I messaged the person and said I'm interested after I went and adopted another boy piggie bought two mid west cages and the oxbow treats and good Timothy hay not alpha. I did all my research and when I met up with this guy he was not feeding him everyday veggies bad cage everything was bad you should seen when that piggie came home I did not have to have them separated for long about a week had no idea what I was doing they love each other but are happy healthy and I have you to thank I watched all your videos thank-you and saskia

with mine I just carefully took him out of the cage trying not to scare him, then if he didn’t want to come out and hid in his hide I grabbed him out of his hide and basically forced him to spend at least 30 minutes with me. he came running up to me after only about 5-6 days after I got him. sadly he went to a rescue because he was aggressive to our other males and we didn’t have enough space for him. he loved being out of his cage, though. also I wouldn’t recommend this with genuinely submissive guineas because it could really scare them and you could delay the taking process. if you have a dominant one it can be great to do it this way imo

For some reason Percy my piggy is still not wanting to use the ramp! Ugh, this is so annoying for me! I have a 2x2 space up there not even being used.. I'll have to modify where the ramp meets the upper level.. I love Nate and Snoop's cage!! I took Percy to the vet and am deciding not to neuter him because of the risks of infection.. So I've decided to expand my cage and get another boy instead.. Hopefully this works! Any tips on bonding a 10 month old piggies to another? Would a baby boy be best?

Thank you for your amazing videos! I recently adopted two young guinea pigs and they are very shy and so I have a question. How to spot clean and in general clean their cage when they are still quite unsure about my presence (they are slowly getting used to me) without stressing them too much? My heart breaks when I see them scared. Of course they mostly poop in their hiding places so they are most messy. Should I leave them alone for the first week or so or keep on cleaning around them so they get used to it? Would love some advice about that

This method of training seems to be working better for me and my two little boy piggies, I tried Saskia's advice about holding them until they would stop squirming but it actually backfired on me so I had to start over. At least Luigi comes to me for food and now and he actually rests his little paws on my hand when he's chewing, but his friend still sneaks around even with food, I'm not a fan of being peed on but I found that there's some diapers for them online, 😁by the way Scotty your view is awesome you have such a beautiful huge house it looks like.

It's not about frequency, it's about volume if you give them too much volume of fresh veggies they will get soft poops. A good amount would be one big piece of lettuce and a chunk of cucumber or green pepper and you can spread it out during the day. You can give them more but if you see soft poops back off. Make sure that they're eating delicious hey 80% of the diet is hay

Scotty, "Well they're not dogs." And I course I think to myself, "But technically Snoop is a D-O-double-G!" Lol I have 4 Midwests on a rack. My kids can reach the bottom three cages, and they constantly bring treats and feed the pigs in those cages with the doors down and my kids don't try to pick them up unless I am there to help. As a result all of those bottom cages have pigs that are extremely tame and trusting because of this. They will come right up to us and let us pet them without running away. Only my husband and myself can reach the top cage. And while those pigs do get lots of treats and attention from us, they are both extremely wild and skittish. It's also very hard to pick them up and a traumatic experience seeing this huge hand reaching in chasing them when I have to take them out for cage cleanings and nail trims. I'm probably going to set up another rack next to this one and move them down to a lower shelf and give them a little more space between shelves so it's easier to reach in and pick them up. And also attach the Midwests to give some of the piggies on the bottom shelves more room to zoom. Or I might build something completely different. I want something with a flip down front panels like you showed in your video to make cleaning easier. I could just flip down the side and hold the trash can up and scrape the bedding into the trash can. The scooping out of the bedding takes so much time. And I wish the doors of the Midwest were larger. Without an open top, reaching in and picking up squirmy pigs with only one hand is really difficult for me and traumatic for the piggies. When I finally figure out my design, I'll be sure to share it with everyone!

When I'm trying to build trust with my rats, I go under them or to the side instead of over. I think because they are prey animals, they feel less threatened when something is not hovering over them.

Scotty, I have to male piggies together in two connected Midwest cages. I have cats and dogs so the cage has a top on it. Whenever I go to interact with them it’s hard because of having to take the top off. Any recommendations about the cage/cat situation and how to better bond with them? Also the cage is on the floor, so would it be better to put it up on a table so I’m at the pig’s level and not hovering over them. Thanks.

funny enough i started with one finger on my own content with just being aloud to touch a nose when they stood up to get treats or veg. Yesterday Lucy let me give her a little rub one finger down her head and back. the other i have been able to approach with an underhand low to the ground and give them chin rubs and maybe a little head pet

it's really hard for me to "tame" Cooper because of my dog. Charlie literally freaks out any time someone talks to Cooper. Cleaning the cage is a nightmare. Holding Cooper, Charlie has to be gated in another room while he cries and has like an anxiety attack. I wish I had a bigger house. I have 2 bedrooms but Charlie just claws the door and cries and freaks out. I feel like I cant punish Charlie for wanting to kill Cooper because hes a dog. It's in his nature to hunt (and hes part Poodle so it's really in his blood). I just dont know what to do anymore. I will not give up on either of them though. I know that for sure 100%.

I hope this isn't turn into another heartbreaking story like I hear way to often. It is not giving up to make sure that you provide your guinea pigs with a safe home. If a dog gets in once and you think that that would be the end of it is that a risk you're willing to take? I literally hear horror stories all the time at the rescue and in emails

@@ScottysAnimals I have Cooper in a cage up on a table. It's a midwest cage. My husband is in the process of making him a stand for it. It's in the livingroom because I dont want him alone in the other bedroom. He always has supervision by myself or Mark. Charlie is not tall enough to reach the table on his hind legs. I would never do that to any animal Scott ☹

Oh dear this story scared me. I know you want the best for your fur babies. But your pup is miserable and Cooper may be nervous 24/7! See if any of your good friends would adopt Cooper that way you could visit him often. Otgerwuse I think this is not good for either of them, they are both unhappy.

@@kayesguineapigs they're not though. Charlie just goes through his emotions when someone pays attention to Cooper and Coopers really not bothered by him. He runs around his cage with zoomies, he popcorns, he wheeks constantly. He knows hes protected inside his cage. I guess I need to go onto a dog channel because talking it out shows me that Charlie is the problem. Cooper shouldn't have to conform to his needs. I'm not here to scare people (and I could care less if I get judged), I posted because I'm frustrated and need help and would like suggestions. Again I see I need suggestions for Charlie and not Cooper lol

Maybe take Charlie outside while taking care of chores or hanging with Cooper? I don't know if you have a yard or live in a big city or something but that's what I would do (: To me though, I think adding a friend to his cage would help him have some company. Atleast if you don't pay attention to him while the dog is around he has a buddy to hang with

So my pigs will eat from my hand. And occasionally I can pet their nose while they eat, mostly the oldest one, the young piggy gets scared easily. I know they are happy because they popcorn through the cage and when I fill their hay thingy, they also come hang for a bit while I clean their cage so they are not THAT afraid. They just don’t want to be picked up I guess. But maybe it will take time, I have definitely seen improvements since I first got them. Just not cuddles like I would like. 😌

Thank you @scotty animals My girls Jade and Willow are seven weeks old today and they still run from me. (except when I have food lol) it breaks my heart because I want them to allow me to cuddle and pet them. I know it takes patients so I'm hanging in there.
