How to Talk about Hope in English | Present, Past, and Future

The word hope in English seems so simple, right? Here’s the thing. The word 'hope' can do MUCH MORE than simply highlight what you anticipate or want in the future.
It also highlights expectations you had - expectations of past events. Or expectations you had of people.
It can reflect on past desires you had as well. And ponder the possibilities of the present.
The word hope in English unlocks your ability to do all of that.
But here's the twist: using 'hope' correctly involves more than just the word itself; it's about mastering the time tenses that give your sentences life and meaning.
Whether you’re here to brush up on your English grammar skills or you’re an advanced English speaker aiming for fluency, understanding how to use hope in English with precision across different tenses is a game-changer.
In today's video, we're diving deep into the heart of English verb tenses-past, present, and future-highlighting how 'hope' evolves with each.
From 'I hoped for a better outcome' to 'I hope you'll join us,' and even 'I will hope for the best,' we'll explore, through examples and easy-to-follow explanations, how you can express your past, present, and future hopes in English.

Situations you propose using hope 1. I hope your job interview goes well and you get the job you looking for. 2. I hope the decoration is to your liking too, but is there anything else you think would be appropriate to change? 3. I hope in the aeroport lounge has a good food and nice place to rest until I wait for the next flight I hope you continue to share your grace, beauty and knowledge with us 😃

Thank you so much for the insightful lesson! I enjoyed it very much! Sorry to ask one question: I am curious about the difference between these two examples: "I hoped I would meet her today" (this means I did not meet her today based on the example) and "I hoped they would call me the next day" (in the example, it means that this is my hope at some time point). May I ask how do we know one hope is not fulfilled, and another hope is for the future at some time in the past? Is it based on the whole sentence, not just the "past tense" of hope and the modal verb "would"? Thank you so much for your help and expertise!

Thank you. These are great responses. In the last example, the time tense is a tricky and to keep it focused in the past (since we can't change what happened in the past) we would say: At that moment, I hoped/wished I had booked a later flight.

When we use "I'd" it always has one of two possible meanings: 1) I had 2) I would We determine which meaning is used based on the context and grammatical structure of the sentence.

Wonderful examples here. The hope you are expressing in each one uses the correct grammar structure. For number 2, another situation to consider is what would you say to your friend who is coming to help you with decorations? You've already started. What will you say about the decorations when she arrives?

Because this is future focused, a better structure would be: hope + present simple. For example, I *hope* you *get* the job.
