Apart from what the Dr. mentioned. From my experience you should always disregard the very 1st reading when the machine is powered on the first time. Then do multiple readings at about 1 Min intervals and average them out, don't panic or discourage when the reading is worse than you expected. Since you have the machine, why not experiment with it, take readings at diff times, before and after diff activities performed soon you'll have an idea of how your body reacts to certain situations. Track your progress if you're trying to improve your BP it's a long term goal. Take charge of your body, all the useful info provided by the health experts are recommendations and suggestions only, you should be the ones in control of what works and doesn't work for you.

Really? So how do does one make sure the doctor's blood pressure monitor is working, Dr, or are we supposed to just assume it most definitely is? That's one thing. The next thing is, if, say, "white coat syndrome" is at play in this matter, what you suggest is really going to end up being, as the expression goes, "six of one, & half a dozen of the other."

From reading and googling how to take an accurate blood pressure, supporting the arm (cuff )at heart level is important because when the arm is hanging, gravity can change the reading. Also, emptying the bladder is important to. That will throw off a BP reading so don't do a reading if your bladder is full.

When I take the reading after a cup or two of coffee the numbers spike really high like sometimes 30 pts on the systolic and 20 pts. on the diastolic. It does come down eventually. Does this mean I have a caffeine sensitivity and is it dangerous? my PA said it is not good to have high numbers like 150/90 even after caffeine?

Also, be sure to have a proper fitting blood pressure cuff. If one has very large biceps because of excess muscle or fat the normal blood pressure cuff will give a false reading, and the same applies if one's biceps are very slim either because of the skeletal frame or because there isn't much muscle and/or fat. I have learned this through my nursing skills.

I notice they always rush me into it. sit in a awkward chair position. Dangle my arm. Talking to me asking me questions while I'm taking the reading. Pretty much everything opposite of you mentioned. Thanks Doc for explaining the correct way of measuring BP - I never knew of the mark on the band and that it should be aligned to your artery. On a different note, I have seen that when you go to a doctors clinic - they dont let that the patient settle down for 5-15 min before BP can be taken. Most likely, they take a reading and manually compensate by reducing 5-10 points. For example, i tested 130/90 and then they took the reading as 120/80 - because the reading was taken as soon as i sat in the doctors clinic. How accurate would that be? Does the reading change when BP is measured with patient lying down?

The problem is I wake up at different times every day ranging from 6 AM to 10 AM (depends on how well I slept or if I'm in pain). How well idoes it work with a range of four hours? Or, should I take it at 6 AM every day? I have an alarm set for then to take some of my pain meds. Some days, I go back to sleep anywhere from one to four hours when the next alarm goes off. Question on Arm Position: How important is it to have the arm perfectly parallel, lined up, etc. with your heart? It seems to be true that keeping it below your heart will give you a false-high, while having it above your heart will give you a false-low. It looked like your arm was a little high in the video, Dr. Story. What is the ideal way to support your arm, at what level, etc. when checking at home?

those machines are a piece of shit. I tried using at least 3 different models, just out of curiosity, and the reading were not consistent on any of them. I would get one reading, then repeating the process would give me another totally different value. Asking my friend (who's actually studied medical school) to do it using a stethoscope yield another unrelated value. The stethoscope values were always the same, constant all across the board, making it the only reliable method.
