How to Take Notes Effectively | Jim Kwik
School automatically assumes you know how to take notes, but you might not have been taught there are multiple ways to take notes, and some are better than others.
There are techniques that use the whole brain to note down information. Our left brain is linear, and our right brain is creative. When you can use both in capturing information, it makes it much more memorable.
This is a simple method you can use for note-making in any area of your life. By learning to use this technique, you’ll be able to learn important methods quickly in the future because you know how to effectively capture information.
For this method, it’s best to write by hand. Why?
Taking handwritten notes forces you to focus on the most important parts of the information you’re hearing and reading. It will increase your comprehension and will help you to identify how you might apply the information in the future.
Today's Assignment: Practice using the Capture Create note-making method!

During college, I was always terrible at note-taking! And nobody taught me how to take better notes. We all know reading your textbook is overwhelming and waaaay too much information to contain and remember, so you know the lectures your professors give you is the key is making the most of your exams and passing it with flying colors! The only way I was better at exams is simply by remembering the emphasis my professors put on things to remember by repeating the same things over and over or by letting students know that, "THIS QUESTION" will be on the exam, so you better remember! No longer in college, but this is applicable anywhere! Thanks for the tips, Jim! 😊

Jim, thanks a lot. I am subscribed to your channel, but I get to know about them only when KZread chooses to display it on my screen. So... How frequently are these coaching sessions conducted. Then I can log in ASAP.. You are doing a great service to make our learning curve better and better! Keep up the good work. 👌👍

You answered my question already, which I didn't hear the first time I listened. Looks like I'm the living example for your observation on inability to focus and listen! Lol!

Actually this video is very effective to even teach our own students how to retain what they learn from us. Mindmapping so important especially as we teach disruptive technologies
"Why MUST I use this?" is the question I definitely am needing to add, execute and utilize. Love this thank you.
I took notes from the video and I realized that when I normally take notes my mind use to go somewhere else (pending things to do, wishes etc) and I just focus on information caption, after this video I have learned that if I puts my mind to capture information but also to think about the real use and application of the content I will retain more information, that makes sense because you are adding something else beyond taking notes task, you are getting your brain working in real life application of the knowledge. That is great technique.!!
Very helpful Thank you Jim, I’ve been doing it the worst way for many many years! Never to late to learn🙏
Great note taking tool for retaining and revising information from talks & lectures. Love it!! thanks so much.
This has been my struggle from day 1 - I was the classic note taker that recorded lectures and then wrote notes VERBATIM 😱. Yep - didn’t retain. Thank you so much for this information!!
Definitely, I will share this with my students... Thanks Jim kick
Thank you so much Jim Will follow all your coachings diligently from now on.
This method is great. First day taking notes and I noticed this shift and my comprehension of the subject is a lot clearer
This was truly helpful. Thank you, Jim!
Jim, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I've improved amazingly how to take notes and retain information with your videos, including this one :)
Thank you Jim! This will be put to very good use!
Interestingly I took notes of this video lesson in " capture create" method only. It's really helpful and makes you think about the information you capture. Thanks.
This is very helpful, thank you Jim!
Thank you so much Jim Kwik..This is really amazing.. 👏❤️
Jim Kwik Thank you!! Thank you so much!.. nobody could explain it better than you did, I really appreciate it!, This can definitely help me with my new career, to succeed in life to achieve better things, better goals,
Okay I will do this and evaluate it. Thanks Jim!
needed this, thankyou 💗
This is great! It is like the mirror image of the Cornell Method with the mental boost of “knowledge x action = power”.
Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. It is useful both in personal and professional life.
You are a good Teacher 😍 Long live you!
Thank you Jim. Great Video🙏
Can anyone show me an example of the way they can use this method please? The whole point of searching his method in a youtube video is i am a visual learner and it sticks.. he doesnt really show examples
Awesome Jim! Thanks
Thank you Jim so useful
Thank you so much Jim ❤❤❤
I think this is quite a useful method. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you Jim.🙏🧠♥️
I appreciate this video, I am taking my first IT coarse with Google starting today and I really had to face the fact that I suck at note taking! Thank you!
Hi Jim Kwik, I enjoy your video, you give me some ideas on how to improve my note taking skills. I have found for me, that the web, note, design helps me to remember things better when I take notes. I'm a visual, hearing person, so this design works for me. I would like to hear your idea about this, or if you have any suggestions on better note taking process. Thank you!
Thank you jim🙌🏽🔥🙏🏽
Really they are three magical questions to hack any problem. Thank u very much jim kwik
❤yes i will use moving forward and make note when unable to schedule space to review information again with note taking
Thanks Jim for making my work Kwik!
Thank you, Jim! This is going to be a way for my grades to increase😍
Wonderful. Thank you.
I am lucky. It is only today that I searched for this topic specifically, yet I found it less than 1 day after its publishing.
Thanks Jim!
I have two children. While they were small children in school, one struggled with learning and the other did not at all. The one who struggled was put into learning programs - from the school - that eventually taught her "how" to learn. Guess what, that kid is now wildly successfully in her creative career, and still relies on those strategies. The other child (who previously never even had to study to get good grades) is successful in a different way, but I notice she struggles more nowadays. Learning how to learn is key. I wish I had noticed that 15 years ago.
Thank you!
Thank you very much.
Thank you💗
brilliant note taking method. thanks
For a video about taking notes, and noting in this video how over-explaining can be bad, I find it ironic how often things are overexplained in this video.
So far I am seeing note taking tips on KZread focused on format structure. It is helpful, but I need examples to follow. Some how some way, I do better learning by way of following an example. And any tip on improving my speed taking notes, short hand and summarizing, would be helpful. I suppose practice makes perfect.
THIS was pretty interesting. i am horrible at taking notes; this feels more effective.
Thank you
I've always had trouble with note taking. I'm going to try out this method. Thank you !
🙋🏻♀Ok I paused at 11:36/11:41 time stamp of the video to comment this: I have always used the Cornell Note taking method of compiling/taking notes on the fly and in long form then reviewing nad personalizing it after I go home and on the weekends in college way back in the early to mid 2010s. I will be incorporating this to my bullet journal file folder/notebook Thank you soooo so much for sharing 👏👏👏👏👏😘

Thank you bro ❤
Thanks Jim, recently found your channel and in the journey of improving my cognition. Can you tell this same method can be used in Online learning. studying psychology and have so much info. To cover and it feels like im taking down all the info. Without my knowledge. It's tedious. Could you help me on this?
This is a pretty good way of note taking i'dd probably use it for the movies I watch.
I love how you associated it with what's your written on your t shit 🥰
Thanks jim kwik
At 7 years old, I was labeled "Gifted and Talented". I was apparently ad smart as a 12-14 year old child. I was never taught how to study or take notes. That wasnt a problem at first, but once i hit high school, it became a HUGE problem. It was specifically my US and World history classes that highlighted the problem. That class was taught like it was a college course (it wasnt even an AP course. It was a regular high school class) and we were allowed to use hand written notes on the test. Problem was that the notes we were given were anywhere from 20 to 150 pages long, doending on what we were learning about. I didnt know how to take notes and i couldnt use the notes i was given in class, so i would spend all night and all during class trying to copy the notes down to use. This video helped me a lot. Im planning to start college soon (took a few years off due to mental health and being homeless.) Hopefully this is enough to get me through college. Thank you.
I have a question, do we take and make notes simultaneously. That seems a bit of a challenge ...
Wow ! Wonderful tips for taking notes. Could you please send me a format or screen shot of previously taken notes with these techniques?
Jim I’m learning w/your video &at the same time- I noticed u rarely blink …had me questioning myself if this was A.I. created
If this is all I need to get the rightful information I’m putting it to work right away.
Very interesting page division note taking style. It reminds me to humans brain division: left brain half and right brain half, which should work in different ways (left language, right more mathematical).
Hello Jim! It is such a privilige learning from you and all those ways of improving techniques, better yet to make it possible believe we can prove ourselves to level up our knowledge. Thanks!
I absolutely love your t-shirt,😊
Good video, i like it!
It’s incredible lecture Jim. It will definitely help me to memorize more information in my second language. Thank you so much for creating this video.
I am adding my new goal to listen 1 to your videos weekly. Also, do you have any methods for people that take notes on iPad? For example, re writing my notes after class on paper help, but when is the best time for the brain to due it since is a muscle? Reasons I enjoy note-taking on iPad: I record and take pictures. Is re-writing notes efficient? What about before studying? My professor don't share lectures before but I make a fast reading is that the best approach on pre lectures? I think that getting ready for a lecture should have a whole video. Thank you so much for all your knowledge !
Thank you so much jim kwik for this it is really very much helpful Im sohaib from India And i want you to plzzz have an interview with david goggins he is very amazing guy his teachings will gonna really help us alot So its a genuine request plzz....❤️❤️❤️
I like that take note 1 side then interpret it to to suit you on the right .
For me making my text bold for certain keywords or color. For instance capture create method: We divide parts into left and right: that word could be in bold or in any colorful font..I saw another videos. It says, three R. 1. Remember 2. Recall 3. Retain.
How do you have time to do this, while every sentence have multiple information related to one another to build the whole picture???
Jim, could you show an example of capture? What to capture and how much to capture? I have limitless, so maybe using a couple of pages of the book showing how to decide what to capture. I feel like I capture too much. Thanks.
This is really awesome, I read this method in your limitless book and also in other training. I am thinking today to get different journals for taking notes, 1) for my study on topics for work 2) for the books I am reading 3) for your memory class I am taking. But I am asking if anyone would be willing to post a screenshot of this method of note-taking?
It worked better for data analysis programming to memorize it, than repetition method
I will try this method and thank you, iam not good at taking notes.
Knowledge is power if you agree like it 👌 brotherhood advice aquire as much Knowledge as you can
I love your content this is so great and helpful! You mentioned that the notes should be taken on the left side and in the right it's my interpetation and that way i capture..what happens in case language is right to left language? does the order matter?
@watuhdude
Жыл бұрын
The order shouldn’t matter unless it’s going to interfere with the main point. I don’t see how it would.
I am reading your book now and i wish i had read it as soon as it published ..
Wow Jim 🎉
Before this I used sketchnoting and mindmapoing kind of forms. And in the mindmapping I used examples for my self what it triggered in me. But these questions I will add beacuse it gives a deeper layer and also prioritize. Espcially if I can't explain to myself why I can't use it then it will be not used because I need that as a push to put it into my mind
I think it would be interesting to see this method applied, to see what a page of notes actually looks like.
Thanks 🤭😁 Jim Kwik
I am having so much trouble recalling so much dry information to pass the test. Any recommendations?
I wish I saw this video during high school
I use this in language learning
you are awesome
Greatest
03:10 But what if I write on a Tablet, that's digital but Is it still effective?
Jim please.... I have a real problem of focus then if I will take notes with the capturing - creating information probably I will lose lot information because my dispersion 🥺 Must I make the creative exercise after of the conference? only take the notes of capturing during the event?🙏🏻🙏🏻
This is an interesting method of note taking. The shocking information from was: tradetional noate taking is more effective than digital note takin, I almost forgot how to use a pen :), Well, I will try to get back to the old method again. Although I think these tips are very good for concentration and information retain, but I think it will affect reading speed. I hope my guess is wron.
I took the worst notes when I went through engineering, all my professors were baffled on how I prepared for my exams 😂 I guess I just did, organized chaos I guess, but now I’m preparing for my masters and I can’t BS anymore.
I've never been great at taking notes. Trying to self educate/study topics I'm interested in though want to actually retain it and have quick references if I forget something
He said everything you need to know in his first sentence...to retain something is to remember...folks you have to exercise your memory
How do you control your blinking? I noticed you rarely do so
Yes
the 3 questions to get yourself to do something: 1. how can I use this 2. why must I use this 3. When will I use this
Is this a playlist?
He is genius
I don’t like taking notes because they distract me from listening and understanding the subject. I just pay attention and later write down what I learned.
Good
