PS, if you're wondering what that big Ork model is, it's the "Orc Warchief in Juggernaut Mecha-Armour" by Kromlech. Not sponsored, I just really like the model :)

As a photographer of 10+ years, this is a spot on guide!
Me: *Finishes model, wonders how to photo it.* Guy: "Here's a video on how to photograph your miniatures." 10/10
What a great video; and so nicely filmed too. The shots of the iris opening and closing on the camera were especially lush.

Hard to do too, since cameras only stop down the aperture when you take a picture to aid focusing. Must have been been filming or in live preview and lucky enough to have a camera that allows you to adjust this in those modes.
I can't believe it, finally someone makes a mini shooting guide, with actual details on what settings you use. Not just "well make it kinda low on the iso, but not too much" etc. Thanks Guy
Last video: got virtually everything on the list. This video: DARLING! I FOUND NEW THINGS TO BUY!! My photos are crap and I've been looking to invest in photography equipment for some time, but had no idea where to begin. Many thanks for this, love and hugs to the family! Hope the twins' first Xmas is a good one!

I got myself a Canon 600D second hand and two photography lights with stands (new, 30£ on ebay). Total expense was less than 200£ and it works amazingly. It takes practice but gives nice instagram results. Just get used to pc editing photographs, use correct file outputs etc
You always give me the confidence Guy to do whatever I want when I paint minis. Always easy and never complicated like many other channels.
Several of the more mysterious bits about photography revealed. Useful stuff indeed. Cheers!
I wish all How To videos were as succinct and informative as this video. Thank you for the great content.
I would like a video going over all the aspects of getting started in warhammer from choosing your faction and going over different financial aspects to choosing starting paints and tools, you could make it go from cheap, average, then expensive, to highlight the different ways to get completely started.
I film the same way you do in some of my shots, I bought a whole heap of those handy little c clamps from small rig along with a bunch of their arms. I honestly had no idea about focus tubes though :O, I am 100% going to grab one now thanks was not expecting to walk away with learning something new but I did.
Merry Christmas Guy, Penny and the Twins!!
Nice video for an intro to photos/filming! Just in case anyone thinks a higher f stop number (camera aperture) will always make things sharper - every lens has a range where it starts to get softer due to diffraction. Typically an aperture setting around the middle of your lenses range is best, the smallest aperture will get more in focus but reduce the image quality overall.
Hurray for random Jersey chirstmas decoration cameo
Guy, you have such a genuine talent for clear, concise teaching. I was able to get some incredible photos of my minis, thank you so much!

Sames here, I was really impressed 😅
I've had some real issues with filming minis, so this is very useful! I get the feeling I'll be rewatching this video before every attempt...
0:22 You see, my first wh 40k kit was an 8th edition first strike, so seeing these minis made me think "WOOAH"
So many light bulbs Thanks Guy and all the best to you and your family over the holidays!
I'm a firm believer in 'its not what kit you have, but how you use it' and this is a perfect example of that motto.
I'm very good at those inexperienced shots. Now I'm going to have to get better. Thanks for the tips!
Hi guy I'm in Colchester now with my family and picking picking up some figures in the local Warhammer shop
Happy holidays. I look forward to another year of your amazing content.
You can get awesome quality on any 16mpix + phone while using a polarized lens. You can get cheap filters that clip on under $10 USD. 16mpix phone were from 2010-14 so you probably have an old phone that's ok enough.
"tips of taking great photos of small objects" my bro needs this then
Guy teaching me in 15 minutes what my university took a whole cours to do
Wishing a Happy Christmas & a Healthy New Year to Penny, you and the twins.
I have never thought of using tube extensions like that, that's like magic how close it focuses.
Wow more than I expected. Well done!
Thanks Guy! Merry Christmas to you, Penny, Nessa, Gork and Mork
Lots of great tips in this Guy!
Great Video Guy, very informative. Happy Holidays to you, Penny and the twins.
Cheers Guy, like this behind the scenes stuff
Thanks for the great guide Guy, as an aspiring new channel, its great to have this kind of a guide from one of our favourite 'tubers to give us some pointers. Hopefully we can use this to take our vids to another level!
Merry Christmas and happy New year. Take it easy Guy
Great Video with a lot of good advice I'm going to use. Thank you!
Very useful advice. Thanks Guy.
Extremely useful Guy, thanks! Hope you and the family have a great Xmas.
Cool video guy! I really liked the tip about the extender rings! I've been looking at them for macro photography, but never thought they could be used for filming also!
Another pleasant video Guy! Cheers!
Awesome Vid! The lighting portion helps loads!
Love you, Guy. Thanks for the content.
I was thinking of setting up a social media for my hobby in the new year - lo and behold you've rocked up with the perfect video!! Knocked it out the park again mate.
Great tips! Thanks Guy!
now I got to understand my own camera better, thanks Guy :D
Merry Christmas to you and Penny!
Thanks a lot for sharing solid knowledge of your craft. This is a quality time spend :)
Merry Christmas Guy and Penny.
It's so useful that I have the exact same camera and lenses
Really cool. Thank you very much. I always had the problem of parts of the mini out of focus. Now I know how to fix it
Merry Christmas to you, Penny and little Gork and Mork!
oh wow this is literally exactly what I wanted thanks
Something I’m really struggling with at the moment so this couldn’t have been better timed! Thank you, Guy.
Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
Really interesting. Thanks for making that.
This is a great explanation photography fundamentals.
This is really good and detailed advice.
Thank you so much guy. great video.
merry Christmas Guy, Penny and the twins!!!!!!
Thank you for this awesome video. Gonna start experimenting for better shots.
Time to upgrade my filming before I launch my KZread! Thanks guy 😊
Really great video. Great job
Most of this advice translates perfectly into taking 3d renders. Like actuly reminded me of a Blender tutorial.
Happy Christmas. and a Merry New Year
Great! I'll use this advice for my thumbnails! Thanks so much.
Thanks for the video, Guy! I hadn't considered using my extendors for my mini photography, I normally use it for my aquarium photography but that makes great sense. Happy Holidays to you and Penny and your littles!
It is so kickass of to pull back the curtain a bit on your production: it can be so intimidating once you start having to become a hobbyist in a whole other hobby to get your production values up.
thanks for the help
Awseome video for beginners!
I like your stuff. Great video.
great video for me to learn how to take photos in general and talk about cameras to that girl in college who just always has a camera around her neck
I'm very glad you made this video! I keep taking pictures on my crappy old phones camera and they make my models look so lame, so I've been wanting to get serious about taking better pics. Thanks Guy!
Have a great Christmas. See ya in the new year.
Love your vids!
White paper curved background is great, something I do when selling stuff on ebay. I have a dslr too but most photos I use my phone camera. One trick to remember if if needed, you can turn the camera around to get the lense in right place for the shot, most phones will correct an "upside down" photo but can be done in a basic editing suite too
Great tips!
Great video Guy. I didn't know about ext tubes, neat! Also love the new music takes. One little tip I picked up re: exposure is it's usually better to underexpose than over, if you can't get exactly what you want from your camera. You can enhance the shadows later in software, which works better than trying to fix blown out highlights. Have a great holiday!
I just finished painting my first miniatures, the elite starters set, and I really wish I had taken a picture of my first one! I've already made leaps in my painting, I'm about out grown my cheap brushes already. I took a few pictures of one of my favorite ones, a assult intercessor painted blood angels..ish, but they aren't the best photos, I'll try these tips out for sure! The biggest thing I learned so far is I need one pigment paints, i have over 20 years experience with 4 color process printing, and yellow sucks lol

I'll give you a useful hint - You'll never really outgrow cheap brushes if you're smart. Don't get me wrong here, there are definitely things that you can do better with a quality fine brush that the el cheapos just don't deliver on. There are also a *lot* of things that you'll want to do that are really bad for your brushes and a lot of places where being able to paint the finest line as accurately as humanly possible just doesn't matter. Keep a good supply of cheap brushes from variety packs on hand for the high mileage stuff and break out the really good brushes where they're legitimately helpful.
Good stuff, thank you.
This was incredibly useful for such a short video.
Thanks! I just finished recording my first miniature painting video! And I plan to put all this into affecy next video!
Great vid as always, was pointed here by a facebook user who'd posted a great pic and attributed it to this vid. "Budget model" - I remember looking at that "Budget model" and buying the much cheaper (and not nearly as good) Nikon instead ;0)
This is brilliant! I currently use an iPhone 5 and a led light box and it’s ok, but this will help me take it a step further
Great little video to help with newbies... it’s worth noting that DSLRs basically take an average of the view so you may notice that some of your images come out more grey then you see, especially if you’re shooting with a white background. If you’re using back light, ensure it’s not over powering your front or key lights. If your back light is higher exposure, you could get flare. If you’ve got a bit of spare cash and want to upgrade your lens, a macro lens is the way to go. Macro lens have a much shorter focus distance allowing you to get right into the detail, extension tubes will give a similar result but will never truly give a “macro” image...
Wonderful timing on this one Guy. I just got a tripod and backdrop. Was wondering if my light setup would work, and now I know it will! Thanks!
Is anyone else detecting notes of Journey of the Sorcerer (AKA the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy theme) in the updated outro music?

I wasn't until I read your comment!
I picked up 5 of the Neatfi lamps at a store that does Amazon returns etc. Scored them for $56 each. Made some hobby friends very happy for Christmas. They're great lamps.
Super helpful as I just bought a 250D for miniature photography!
yay A7III gang! Have a great christmas break!
This is great. I make my own fragrances and this will work for this also.
I never knew about the extension ring allowing you to extend the field of focus but closer to the camera side, that could be hand if it worked. Will investigate.
This stuff is golden! I'm at that point where I would really like to take better photo's of the mini's I paint, but to be honest, a DSLR is... Overwhelming, to say the least, if you have about zero experience with one. I do have one lying around (it was a gift a few years ago) and I have a few days off coming up, so I'll definitely be trying this out! Thanks!
Enjoy your christmas time off!
Great video guy! Please do a colour guide at some point!
Great video! Any chance of a link to the little side lights you used in the video?
In your White Balance settings, the rightmost icon which you didn’t scroll over allows you to set it manually. Check the manual on exactly how. (At least that’s what it is on my Canon 7D)
Merry Xmas!
Merry x-mas to you and penny
Hey Guy, Just got into high-quality mini-photography and your video was a tremendous help. So i wanted to share the one Part where i could actually improve an what you did: while a narrower apperture does focu the background more, thats not really apparent when you have a monochrome background. And if you find the right f-value, you usually can skip the post focus-merge. In my cas (Kharadron Overlord Models and a Canon EOS 10D) its about 11 but i am still tinkering Oh and before i forget: I am happily pulling manual focus and did so before, even without preview display, and your video did help, as i said, tremendously =)
The minimum and maximum focusing has to do with the distance between the actual glass of the lense and the sensor so by extending it you are altering this variable. It's how you mess with the ability to focus when doing astrophotography
First it was gaming. Then building and painting. Then 3d printing and sculpting. Suddenly I want to buy a camera and a tripod, so... now photography? Just how many hobbies IS this hobby? 😂
