As someone who has been sewing for years I would actually recommend only working with thread as long as your forearm as anything longer will be likely to knot, twist or catch on the way through. Its easier to rethread than to do the whole job with knotted, twisted thread. Great video though and a brilliant end result. X

As someone who regularly adjusts his pants in the length and width, the only caveat I would add to this video is if you use another pair of pants as a template for length in particular, make sure it is a similar type of pants and material. Thicker material like a pair of jeans sits differently at the cuff of the pants than dress pants that is light weight material like in the video. You might like jeans that gather a bit but dress pants that sit straight. Correcting if it is too long is ok, but if you cut, then hem too short, there may be not enough material to correct.

I suggest investing in a simple sewing machine if you plan on taking in the sides of your pants. They are not that expensive used. Start with a very long stitch first (basting stitch) and check how it falls before going over it with a tighter stitch. It is difficult at best to remove a tiny stitch without destroying the fabric. You will need to trim the extra fabric to 5/8ths of an inch from your new seam. Never to late to learn to sew, I had two brothers that taught themselves to sew BEFORE the internet lol. One made a tuxedo and the other made dress shirts for work. I taught him on a treadle machine as a teenager. Good luck.

My mom's a fashion designer and she taught me the basics of sewing when we were making custom masks for covid when it first happened and the market was high for masks. I just got some brand new pants that fit me amazingly and a bunch of clothes from the goodwill that I love, bit are too baggy. I CAN'T WAIT to tailor them to my new pants and maybe I can watch the jacket tutorials too. I think I'm going to use a sewing machine to save time though and keep a straight line.

I learned to sew as a child by watching my Mother and three sisters. I purchased my ex wife a Kenmore sewing machine in 1981 for Xmas and learned how to use it. I got so good with it that i took it with me when we divorced after 27 years. Still use it today. Buy a sewing machine and learn how to use it, it’s not that hard. Using this method , it’ll take forever. You can also take it to someone who does professional alterations.

the whole point of sewing is to prevent unraveling. It's perfectly fine to cut it with any scissor that's sharp enough. Now, if you're going to leave the cut ends unfinished, pinking them is will be much more needed there.

This technique is used in Japanese sashiko and allows for fast running stitching. It’s hard to explain but there are many tutorials on KZread

Why? This is a great video and it makes me very confident that I will be able to fix two long pairs of pants for my father in law! I actually believe I can do this! Great instructions-thank you, Thomas!!!

Man, this is way easier than i expect. Thank you very muck I'm planning to bleach my old jeans and dye it in black (looks like the black dye doesn't apply very well to blue denim), like an empty canvas. Maybe i'm going to sew it too

It should be easier to dye denim black. Don’t bleach first. Maybe you did not use the correct type of dye. Make sure it is for cotton and use the correct fixer and amount of dye for the weight of material.
