NOTE: wash and dry a new pant before altering. washing can shrink some material so better wash it before to know its shrinkage
As someone who has been sewing for years I would actually recommend only working with thread as long as your forearm as anything longer will be likely to knot, twist or catch on the way through. Its easier to rethread than to do the whole job with knotted, twisted thread. Great video though and a brilliant end result. X

That's what I came here to say. I learned this way prevents knots from forming.

So when you reach the end of the thread you just tie a knot and start with a new piece starting at about the same distance as between your stitches?

Yes. When you come to the end of the thread just fasten off securely, rethread your needle and carry on as before. X

Yeah sure ❤
As someone who regularly adjusts his pants in the length and width, the only caveat I would add to this video is if you use another pair of pants as a template for length in particular, make sure it is a similar type of pants and material. Thicker material like a pair of jeans sits differently at the cuff of the pants than dress pants that is light weight material like in the video. You might like jeans that gather a bit but dress pants that sit straight. Correcting if it is too long is ok, but if you cut, then hem too short, there may be not enough material to correct.
I suggest investing in a simple sewing machine if you plan on taking in the sides of your pants. They are not that expensive used. Start with a very long stitch first (basting stitch) and check how it falls before going over it with a tighter stitch. It is difficult at best to remove a tiny stitch without destroying the fabric. You will need to trim the extra fabric to 5/8ths of an inch from your new seam. Never to late to learn to sew, I had two brothers that taught themselves to sew BEFORE the internet lol. One made a tuxedo and the other made dress shirts for work. I taught him on a treadle machine as a teenager. Good luck.

wow! After years of paying and sometimes not liking the result, today after watching this, I feel inspired to take ownership of my clothing! I was driving to work today and saw everyone with nice suits and I know I am reluctant to buy some bc alterations are so expensive. Thank you!!!!!!!!
Dang. I needed this. I’m a 5’6” guy with a more athletic build. I either find things that fit me horizontally or vertically, rarely both. I appreciate you gents at RMRS 🙏
This is a great video. I have my teenager son watch this video because he has pants that fit the waist but not the leg parts. he measures and I sew them with the sewing machine. This teaches him that when he purchases a pair of pants to make sure it fits the waist and hip area and to tailor when he gets home. thanks and keep on teaching people how to love to sewing.
This is great! As someone who gets every pair of pants hemmed, super helpful video! Going to check the t shirts now!

This video is just pure gold. I usually get my pants tailored by someone else but it feels good to know that I can do them my self.
I hemmed my pants that used to be dragging, and now they fit perfectly. Thank you very much for showing us how to do this!
As a 5’4 male this helped so much!! Almost every suit I have fits perfect around the waist but is just so long! Thank you!
I just saw this video. As a tailor, I would like to say that you need to purchase some bee's wax for hand stitching. Run the thread over the bees wax and then add some steam to it. It helps eliminate the thread getting knots. This should be a must

This works pretty well. Thanks. I never realized it would be so easy. It does take forever to do it by hand though. I did one leg by hand and it took several hours. The other I did with one of those handy stitch machines and did it in less than a minute.

This worked like a charm! Thank you so much for the instructions 🙏🏾
Awesome job Thomas! This is how it all starts. Next thing you know the teacher is learning from the student 😀
My mom's a fashion designer and she taught me the basics of sewing when we were making custom masks for covid when it first happened and the market was high for masks. I just got some brand new pants that fit me amazingly and a bunch of clothes from the goodwill that I love, bit are too baggy. I CAN'T WAIT to tailor them to my new pants and maybe I can watch the jacket tutorials too. I think I'm going to use a sewing machine to save time though and keep a straight line.
i’m 21 years old and never touched a thread and needle in my life before today and i just finessed my work pants to fit exactly how i want it because of this legend 🏅🏅🏅
Got my Airforce Blues and desperately needed them tailored, this helped greatly! Thank you.
Note: sometimes clothes shrink once you've cut them. So if you've done all the alterations, then wash, they might be smaller than desired.

I am glad I have a sewing machine.
I’ve decided to learn tailoring. I’ve gotta bunch of junk clothes and suits to practice on. Eventually I want to be able to make my own suit, shirts, and jeans.
Sorry did I miss something around 3:15 what do you do with the excess material on the inside leg from wherever you've done your new seam, do you just cut it with scissors or what?
Good instructional video. i've been tailoring my pants for years like this for years. I guess I was doing it correctly. I've yet to find a brand of pants that fits me perfectly. Don't forget to prewash your fabric. It could shrink and undo all your perfect measurements. Do this after the first wash.
whoa, Thomas has a great voice. A nice change up from Antonio (no shade meant, Antonio). I'm curious to learn about Thomas' sense of men's style, his perspective and the vibe he and ANtonio have on camera together. Looking forward to seeing and hearing Thomas more, RMRS.
I was about to try a different thing until I saw this and it has probably saved me hours. Thank you
Loved this video. Thanks I'll use my sewing machine but your video showed me how I can do it and do it easy. 🙂
I learned to sew as a child by watching my Mother and three sisters. I purchased my ex wife a Kenmore sewing machine in 1981 for Xmas and learned how to use it. I got so good with it that i took it with me when we divorced after 27 years. Still use it today. Buy a sewing machine and learn how to use it, it’s not that hard. Using this method , it’ll take forever. You can also take it to someone who does professional alterations.
Please don't cut your wool trousers with a regular pairs of scissors. It will unravel and ruin the fabric. Use pinking shears to help minimize the damage and keep the integrity of the cloth.
@Mr-R.R.
2 жыл бұрын
the whole point of sewing is to prevent unraveling. It's perfectly fine to cut it with any scissor that's sharp enough. Now, if you're going to leave the cut ends unfinished, pinking them is will be much more needed there.
props for the Metal Gear solid reference
Thank you. Great video! Finally found what I was searching for.
As a 6'5 male, i appreciate it, i always had trouble with clothes, due to the fact that i'm tall and fit, and here where i live, most pants and jackets are meant for tall AND large, so they always get baggy and i end up needing to tailor it, now i can do it myself.
As a “do it yourself” kind of guy this is super helpful
This video is tailored perfectly, thank you.
Only video that taught me how to fix my pants. Thank you very much.
Perfectly formatted instructional video - clear but very concise. Subscribed👍
I you’re doing it by hand I suggest using a longer needle and while holding the needle with the right wiggle the fabric up and down with the left pushing the fabric into the needle, after few fold of fabric are stocked in the needle just push the needle through by pulling the fabric flat. This technique is used in Japanese sashiko and allows for fast running stitching. It’s hard to explain but there are many tutorials on KZread
I like the untailored look. Its jut much more comfy. Not too baggy though but in the middle. a good balance of not too big or too little.
Perfect. I want so badly to learn the art of tailoring. Unfortunately it seems there aren’t many resources to learn the art form without interning somewhere for up to a decade without pay. I’ve decided to just learn from scratch with trial and error.
This is so great! Thank you!
