How To Strum The Guitar - Beginner Guitar Lesson #7
Welcome to the seventh video in the Beginner Guitar Quick-Start Series. In this lesson Nate covers essential strumming hand techniques. He provides some guidance on how to find a comfortable grip for holding the pick, and then covers practical tips for staying loose and relaxed while you play the guitar.
Strumming is a foundational element of playing rhythm guitar. Not only will these tips help you establish a solid foundation for future playing, but they will also help you reduce the risk of injury or fatigue that can slow down your progress.

I don’t know about anyone else but I think it sounds better when you use your finger and thumb. I would say it’s a richer and warmer sound.

I just wanted to thank you so, so much for sharing with us in a way that is so comfortable. I’m a gramma that has wanted to learn just the basics for years but never felt comfortable with the instructions until I came upon your site. It’s not because you aren’t charging. It’s because you are gentle and not rushing us through. I’ve started and stopped several times being so disappointed in myself for not being able to keep up. I don’t feel that way now and I thank you for that. Truly I do…
Thank you for this video! I literally didn't even know that you didn't hit all 6 strings on the upstroke... so much to learn!

Made me lol 😂
If I mute the strings while practicing strumming, I can't hear which strings I hit vs. which strings I avoided. So if I'm not holding down a chord, I just let the open strings ring and try to listen to which of the 6 notes sounded properly based on which strings I was trying to include. I hope that sounds like a proper strategy.
This video helped me a lot you answered all of my questions thank you for that 😊

I love this series! Thank you. I'm 65 years old and a raw beginner. I'm practicing with a thumb pick, any thoughts or opinions?
I grew up holding my pick kind of like a pen because it was comfortable, but when I finally switched to the proper grip it was night and day in terms of tone and ability to play tight with the beat. Let me just issue this as a warning not to set bad habits out of comfort. The correct grip is the first one he shows, where the fingers are curled and locked behind the thumb.
i came all the way out here to subscribe ! Good boss keep it up
You are awesome..Thanks! :D
How do I know if I should use upstrokes or down strokes?
@MusoraMedia
8 жыл бұрын
You'll learn over time. Most of the time it comes down to the feel of what you're playing. A lot of the time you'll be using the constant strumming technique, which will dictate whether you use an upstroke or a downstroke.
@KidrauhlFanJB

It also depends on what is being accented in the measure. Most songs you will be strumming an 1/8th note rhythm (1 + = down down), which is about 90% of songs. Once you get that down the 1/4 & 1/16 note rhythms are the same hand motion. IMHO, strumming is THE most important thing a guitarist can possibly learn. You'll get it...just keep asking questions until you don't need to ask questions. Good luck! :)

Make sure you are counting the beat and understanding what you are doing and then what beats are being accented as that's AMAZINGLY important! Kick-ass bro! Guitar is my therapy and I always do my best to pay it forward to people who are just learning as I've been playing for 30 years now. It's funny because in my mind I'm only 25 years old...lol...any questions let me know...:)

When you play a chord, do you strum up, down, or up and down at the same time?
@MusoraMedia

I like how to fingers sound and feel easier to do. The pick is louder though
how do i only play theta 5 strings? My tendency is the always play all 6

You can use your thumb to mute the 6th (largest) string. When you grip the guitar neck with your left hand, you'll notice that your thumb is already next to the 6th string. Simply rest it on the edge of the string to mute it.

Hi I'm a fan
Hey Nate, Thank you for putting these guides together. One thing I was wondering is how it should feel when strumming. I always feel like there is a ton of resistance when I hit the strings but when I watch you it almost seems like you're not even touching them. Am I hitting too close to the strings and not letting them flow well and are there any tips to getting a better feeling when strumming? Thanks again!
@MusoraMedia
9 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy, If you feel like there is a lot of resistance when strumming you might wan to make sure that you aren't digging too much of the pick into the strings. Just dig enough of the tip of the pick into the strings to get the appropriate amount of volume out of the strings. You might also want to mess with different pick thicknesses.
Manuel Neur teaches guitar? Dope
well i need help i am comfortable at the both i mean i am using down and upstrokes TOGETHER its a good thing right?
When strumming (upstroke or downstroke), do we need to hit all the 6 strings? Pls be patient to reply. I'm trying to learn from all your lessons step by step.
I am facing problems with downstrokes and upstrokes altogether on my guitar. I also am facing problems with playing strumming faster.

When I strum,my wrist & sometimes my fingers come in contact with the strings & thus the sound doesn't get produced smoothly.How can I avoid this mistake?
@eelmiraataanevaa6805

Cut off the fingers, works like a charm.
how do you exactly do these microadjustments? I've been having trouble adjusting myself while strumming, I need like 1-2 seconds to put the pick back in the right positioning. Would love any advice, thanks and great video as always!
Here's a tip use a lighter pick that flexes easy for strumming and a heavier pick for picking
Thanks 🙏🍬 This is classic Guter?
While up strumming is it mandatory to hit all the 6 strings or any less number is fine
Nate hi can i ask when i touch the string should i just touch it soft or i ill hard it?
how do you know how many strings to touch on your up stroke?
Do I use my index finger when I’m upstroking(when playing without a pick)
Hey its grt :-) very helpful 😘😘😘
