    Great tip on the storage box. Flipping every other one. I just got back into collecting the last few months and finally got my first box, again. Put them in and was like ?? they are going at an angle! After seeing what you did I immediately went to my box and rotated every other one. Never noticed it, or do not recall, when I was a kid collecting in the 80's.

    I have a large collection of silver age 60's & 70's stored in my roof space for the last 18 years. They are as good as the day I bought them despite the changing seasons. My roof space is well insulated with the regular amount of ventilation. Store them properly and you'll have no problems whatsoever. Just keep them away from light and excess moisture.

    Not only do I bag and board my comics, but I also put them into top-loaders. They are great for protecting comics against the dreaded 'spine roll' as the thick edges of the top-loader prevent the spines from compressing against each other. They're fantastic!

    I've switched back and forth on different types of bags I started with resealable modern age bags with modern half backs, then I moved to silver age bags and boards but I wasn't too keen on everything sliding around with my modern books so I decided to go back to modern bags however I accidentally bought the standard non-resealable bags and while I was initially annoyed I just went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of scotch tape. The bags were also a little smaller this time but I came up with a novel solution to gently stretch them with a standard size trade paperback because I could only fit my book in there without a board however I bag AND board and they just weren't wide enough. I also used to tape vertically but I've found it's easier and safer to open your books if they are sealed vertically. One strip and you're done. And don't try to reuse the tape. Discard the old strip and use a fresh one.

    You are so right! Environmental conditions are everything. Even putting your books in CGC holders or slabbing will not protect your books from heat, moisture and light. I collect DC Superpacs and marvel Multi Mags and they have been in cheap plastic for 45 years and are like new. Don't get me wrong, I use Mylar on my entire collection, but that's because i like the way they look inside them, but they're kept out of the light!

    Jim, Wow what a great video! I cant tell you how helpful it has been for me, especially getting back into collecting. I really enjoyed it and hope to see more great tutorials and videos. if I were you, I would go with e-bay or an auction house. You might need to take inventory of what you have on hand, and look up the values of each one. It will take some time, for sure, but could pay off in the long run.

    I keep watching this video and I swear I am picking up new things each time. So right at 5:50, is that a 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 Mylite bag with a 7 x 10 1/2 backer board? If so, does the reduced size help prevent your comics from bending once you tape off the top edge? I noticed on some of my comics, I use the same sized bag and board and when I tape it off, my comics tend to bend, or get rounded. That can't be good for the long term, correct? Also, do your comics (bagged like the one at 5:50) tend to move around a lot when you shake them a little?

    I use plastic boxes for office to storage paper. They are big enough to keep 2 stacks of comics. can the comics be damaged this way, in stacks? I put them this way because If I put the comics standing, the usual way, they can be damaged in the top because the pressure of more boxes over. Putting the comics in stacks I can leave a bit of space and white boards for protection( sorry my english). Great videos,thanx!!

    Wish I had a dollar for every time I pulled a comic out of a taped bag fresh from the comic store when I was a kid and the damned tape tagged the book. Eventually I learned to remove the tape right away. I've been collecting since the early 70's and have never used boards. I've used the Bill Cole 4 mil mylar bags and boxed them loosely since the 80's (When I began swapping out all of the polyethylene bags the back issues came in) and have never had an issue. They still look great.

    There's only one way to display comics in a box LOL I don't know when it became popular to use books as art on a wall, but please stop...The next time I'm in my LCS I'll have to take a picture he's got a CGC 9.8 FF 21 first Marvel Zombies on the wall for years the cover is so discolored just from the store lights (it's nowhere near any windows) you can't even tell what it is anymore. All these guys are like but I keep my blinds closed...forget about it give that book 10 years and it will be ruined. The reason all these high grade Golden Age books exist is because they've been stored in the dark basements....Great video as always! 😁

    Hey Whitedog. I am not sure why they won't bring the stuff in for you, that is weird. I get all my bags and boards through my LCS. They just order them through Diamond Dist. which is where they order all the comics from and it all gets shipped together with the comic order. Maybe they don't know that they can order them from Diamond? Or maybe they are really cheap and don't want to cover the shipping costs? Maybe inquire about the shipping costs and ask if you pay for them if they will order. Because I buy 1000 bags at a time I get the Mylite 2 bags for $16 Canadian per pack of 50. Jim

  • @tracyisbest
    @tracyisbest6 жыл бұрын

    Re: Poly bags Where do you live? I never used to understand the discrepancy when posters would talk about how long bags last. But location is everything. I live in Florida and it's a non-stop battle to keep books looking nice in poly bags. Yes, down here their shelf life is about 5 years or a bit longer. Meanwhile, you have a book there from what, 1981 that still holds up? I'm guessing you're not a Floridian then. :) Truth is, the humidity is a killer and even storing your books in a cool, dry, dark room has it's limits due to the overall, year-round environment that we live in constantly. I got so tired of having to change out bags on thousands of books that finally, the mylites saved me from this. I realized I'd pay a little more to make the switch on all of them but it's the last switch I had to make. I also prefer the fullbacks to the halfbacks but to each their own.

  • @jimcomics3017

    @jimcomics3017

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tracy. I am in Vancouver Canada so the weather is definitely nowhere near as humid. I still have some old comics in bags from the 80's in the original poly bags and even though they are wrinkled, yellow and smelly the comics come out in NM condition. My higher valued books go into Mylar bags and commons still go in poly until they become a coveted book. If stored properly a poly bag is fine for way longer than most people say but I do prefer mylar. By far a better quality bag and the book looks so much better in them. They also help prevent the comic from sliding around or dropping right down to the bottom of the bag which can cause corner blunting over time. At the end of the day do what you can afford and works best for you. Jim

    OK Liam this was way harder than I thought it would be, so many good X-Men books. There are the obvious big ones Hulk 181, Giants size X Men 1 and X-Men 94 but not very affordable. If you find any of those for reasonable buy them. The whole run from 94 to early 120's is awesome and valuable. My top few affordable X Men are 120, 121, 129, 134, 141, 142 and 266.

    Had to add that the early issues 1 - 67 are getting pretty pricey but again if you can find them for a reasonable price I would recommend picking them up. Issues 67-93 were all reprints of earlier issues so keep that in mind when out hunting. They still have value but not as much as some other books. 94 is start of original stories again.

    Way to throw that Kazar #1 around constantly. Just because it was in a bag doesn’t mean you can’t still damage it the way you kept handling it.

    So silver age bags/boards for modern age comics?

    That is what I use but not everyone agrees with it. I would recommend trying out some silver age and modern age bags and see what you prefer. I collect silver age, bronze age and modern so having one size that fits all makes it easier for me. Take care Jim

    Jim Comics Thanks. I've read that some people don't like how tightly modern comics are packed into modern bags and that they could potentially damage the book.

    Yes I don't like modern bags at all. I find that the modern boards are actually slightly smaller than the comic and corners can get damaged. The silver age boards are bigger and always cover the corners. If you have a valuable book I would definitely recommend the mylar bags as they are way stiffer, dpn't allow the comic to drop to bottom of the bag, don't need to be changed out every 7-10 years and don't absorb any moisture which poly bags do believe it or not. Plus they are crystal clear and your book will look amazing. Take care Jim

    Putting the spines all on one side does cause spine roll. Then you are looking at pressing your comics.

    If a person can't figure out bagging and boarding on his own, with a few simple questions concerning best materials for doing so, it's like he never bought back issue. Ever. --- I will be impressed when somebody does an educated vid on PH values.
