    I don't eat breakfast, don't feel hungry. So the first meal of the day is lunch: Bowl of blueberries, 2 stewed prunes plus one apricot, with juice; to this I add ground flaxseeds/sesame seeds/sunflower seeds/ pumpkin seeds and flaked almonds. Salad with rocket (arugula), green lentils and red kidney beans - dressing is homemade hummus, along with garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, ground black pepper and nutritional yeast. Slice of homemade wholemeal bread with yeast extract and peanut butter, slices of tomatoes. Followed by half a banana with a Medjool date. I also make a smoothy with kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, dates, soya milk. I'm 86, been vegan for 20 years, do 3 or 4 ultra marathons a year (11 so far since Covid), on no meds - and living my best life!

    LOL, I am only 70, so maybe I am just not old enough yet that my appetite drops. I just ate two large burritos with black beans, brown rice, avocado and homemade salsa - and I am still a bit hungry. Better have that cuppa coffee and a slice of homemade bread.

    If Ms. Davis is working on a book for plant-based seniors, please tell her that a chapter on weight loss in this population would be really helpful. It's really hard to maintain a calorie deficit and get proper nutrition at this stage of life.

    Intermittent fasting helped me a lot this past year. I have an 8 hour feeding window, with 1 or 2 veggie/fruit snacks, and my 2 meals. Mastering Diabetes has been helpful too, though I don't have diabetes. Been going to the gym in the last year as well, with lifting weights. I've lost 30 lbs.

Have no problem with protein intake along with my weight lifting for strength gain. All major compound lifts and pull ups. Seniors don’t need animal products for protein I consume different soy products daily.

    71 years of age. Parents made me eat meat and drink milk when I was a kid. At age 66 I evolved into Type 1 (Insulin Dependent). My body kept fighting if off. Processed foods - junk foods. Animal products won. Learned from a natural Dr. who insisted I do a Food Allergy Test that Casein in Milk was causing Inflation. I could go on and on. Bottom line - Now I say: The Way I Eat cuz I don't like the word Diet. 71 on the go with a Healthy Way of Eating to go along with my energy. Research Research Research best words I heard from a nurse. My goal is to NOT let clueless Dr.s destroy me. Now I have a Dr. who will listen to ME and not try to force me on Drugs :-) YES IT IS POSSIBLE TO TURN YOURSELF/HEALTH AROUND.

    It's a bit of a mind f when greger says to keep it low. We have to figure out keeping it high enough without going too high.

  • @xcast1

    @xcast1

    6 ай бұрын

    Greger uses study data. BD bases her "protein" guess on bean feeding annecdotes. Bottleneck for hair, skin, bloating/intestine specifically could be more about choline, sphingolipids etc. in the end. (See also my other comment)

  • @xcast1
    @xcast16 ай бұрын

    21:22 - 'improving skin, hair, bloating .. with little more protein" with beans etc.: Doubt protein until same effects are shown with extracts. Could be more about choline, which is high in those foods, otherwise scarce in vegans, and specifically critical for those tissues. Mushrooms are great too...

    I would love to know the answer to how many kg? For the overweight body OR the body weight you are aiming for? After gastric bypass there is really a focus on protein. Why not before?

  • @thorn324

    @thorn324

    5 ай бұрын

    @Debitandcredit77 - If you look at p. 346 (second-last paragraph) of _Becoming Vegan: Comprehensive Edition_ (Summertown TN: Book Publishing Company, 2014) by Brenda Davis & Vesanto Melina, you'll see the answers to your first two questions. After laying out general recommendations for adults (both younger and older), the authors write this: "Because this recommendation is based on a healthy weight, an overweight person of any age should use his or her healthy body weight to calculate the desired protein intakes (see table 12.1 on page 363)." I hope you find this information helpful. Btw, @Debitandcredit77, in reference to your last question, it seems to me (from having watched a few television programs about gastric bypass) that there _is_ a "focus on protein" before gastric bypass surgery as well as after. Invariably, though, the type of protein prescribed is animal- rather than plant-based. Also noteworthy is the fact that several of the patients end up with severe constipation, even to the point of experiencing bowel obstruction-clearly (at least to all of us who eat a plant-based diet), the important lesson to be learned is this: No fiber = no good! People-including their bariatric surgeons-who make a habit of scarfing down fiberless animal-based substances have not learned that lesson. Too, too bad for them.

    Really protein the bottleck? Guess the effects she talked about are more due to choline, which is also high in those added beans etc. (See my other comment.) Experiments with protein extract vs choline extract .. could highlight the actual bottleneck factor(s). Amino acid status can be measured w blood tests.
