How to start up a new koi pond/filter (avoid new pond syndrome)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is my tried and tested method for starting up a new koi pond and filter whilst avoiding new pond syndrome. I have honed this technique over some 25 years keeping koi and starting many different ponds. In this video I take you, step by step, through my own method for starting, seeding and maturing a new filter system, quickly and safely.
I talk about what you need to achieve and how best to achieve it.
I'll tell you everything you will need to buy to get the job done.
This video also contains a lot of useful information for anyone who keeps koi but is not necessarily starting up a new filter at this time. Some of the information will benefit anyone in their day to day koi keeping.
The critical information you need when starting a new filter is how much ammonia is toxic to your koi and yet many people don't know what that level is or how to calculate it. I'll tell you exactly how to find this out for your specific pond water and how to use this information to safely navigate this potentially tricky process.

    SODIUM THIOSULPHATE - 1 teaspoon of crystals will neutralise 1000 litres of tap water. You can make up a solution and pour it over the pond surface or on to your air bubbles for good distribution. It is safe even if you overdose it. It can also be used to neutralise PP. Be aware that a small amount of ammonia is released when chloramine is neutralised with SS but it is a very small amount. I get it from ebay, 99% pure, for around £5.85 for a kilogram.

    @@DazzleKoi One question please, what happens, if during the cycling, there is an algae bloom ( which is pretty common) and the ph start to rise? Sometimes past 9. What do you do?

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate, sorry for the delay. I personally would stop the feeding, or at least throttle it right back, and add something like hydrogen peroxide to kill the algae off. You could also use one of the chemical green water treatments which do the same job. They will knock green water back in a couple of days. You could also measure your pH at dusk when it will be at its highest and use that figure to continue your process with but it is likely to be high so your window for ammonia toxicity will be small.

    Hi mate, yes definitely you can do it , its a doddle. You need a friend who is similarly practical. One of you mixing and passing stuff and the other applying. Dont mix to much, particulalrly at first until you get used to it. Mix it to a ratio that will last longer in the pot. Put plenty on, you want to make sure there are no dry spots. Order more than you need as you will get through more than they say you will first time. I think you are roughly around 20m2 so the kit you need is £484 but get some extra resin. www.fibreglassdirect.co.uk/fibreglass-pond-kit.html?ad_term=&ad_campaign=8422390004&ad_placement=&ad_group=84233493805&ad_device=c&gclid=Cj0KCQjwytOEBhD5ARIsANnRjVgCfo-3i6pwCsDDtAHO291VnEZ1c3NDdrSeGYGrJATCT1msWG04sQQaAutKEALw_wcB

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Alan, yes, unfortunately it will also lower your KH. I would leave it alone because , as you say, KH 4/5 is perfect. pH has quite a broad range of acceptable values and its more important that it is stable than it is to have at at a particular point in that range. Koi find it difficult and quite resource intense to adjust their bodies to a different pH 👍👍👍

    Hi Baden, I've used a hanna pen type pH meter and two other, cheap ones. If you calibrate it properly and then use it you should get a very accurate reading but they drift out of calibration very quickly and you never know if it is correct or not. With the drop tests they have nothing to vary or drift, they are more consistent, if not as accurate. I find consistency is better than accuracy and unreliability.

    Hi mate, sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away on holiday. I would definitely not recommend rocks in the bottom. They tend to just harbor sediment which is then a breeding ground for bacteria. You don't say how the pond is constructed, is it concrete bottom, fibreglass, liner, clay?? Also, do you have a filter on there and if so what kind is it and what flow rate is your pump?

    Probably one of the least complicated explanations.........ever!!!! 👏🏼 Daz i really enjoyed that the only problem is i don't have a new pond to start up 🤔 I may get the spade out 🤣. The pure pond gel as with most products have their place but what do you think about the pond balls? I have seen on videos and heard aswell as experienced them still being in the system for over 18 months without dissolving. When I was solely using an easypod i put some in with the k1 micro as all the water passes through there but over 18 months later they were still there so I'm now dubious. Take care my friend 👍🏼

  • @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi tom and thank you. Yes I to am dubious of the balls and bombs. I've heard mixed reviews. Personally I don't believe bacteria can survive dormant for any more than 12 months so for me they need to dissolve inside that time or they are dead. Some ponds they dissolve in days, other never at all. I read they dissolve when they need to, i.e. when ammonia is present, but I don't buy that personally. I avoid them to be honest. The gel has been great for me though 🍻🍻

    Great video. About to get an EZ 750 and Draco minima, all the videos have been really helpful. I'd quite like a butterfly ghost in the pond and also like the idea of starting with some hardier fish. Equally, I think Tim's tosai deals (5 for 250) would be a great start. Would you recommend steering clear of cheaper ghosts because of origin and risk of carrying KHV etc? Same goes for stocking UK bred (eg cuttlebrook) with cheaper ghosts. Lastly, would you trust carpco to be safe to add? I obviously appreciate quarantine solves a lot of this risk but not all

  • @DazzleKoi

    Hi Ryan and thanks very much 🍻🍻 I agree about Tim's tosai deals, they are great value and a great place to start. I don't think you need to steer clear of ghosts necessarily but quite often people tend to 'outgrow' ghost koi and move them on once the hobby really bites and you start to strive for better and better quality. Of course many people love them and have them for decades so its no guarantee either. I would say buy what you like and enjoy at this stage. No issues with Cuttlebrook either, they are producing some greart fish and often at good prices. Just try to follow good practice when introducing any new fish, no matter where its from. I'm not familiar with carpco in terms of where there koi are sourced from but I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of online sales without seeing any koi in the flesh first. the only thing I would personally steer clear of is mixing koi from israel with japanese koi. This can be a controversial subject but I wouldn't take the risk of adding a KHV vaccinated fish in my pond with none vaccinated fish. I appreciate the risk is low but its not one I'm willing to take for what is invariably a lower quality koi anyway. My honest advice would be to get hold of half a dozen tosai from the same place and grow and learn from them all together. Its fascinating to seer them develop and you will learn a LOT 👍👍👍

Once it starts to show, throttle back on the food. It should take a few days to appear but I think it will be low level. Hi Craig, you can do that but you can do things to help make the transition easier. Find yourself a mess bag or net bag of some kind. A member of the channel is currently doing just this with mess laundry bags off ebay. You can either put the current biological media in the bag and suspend it in or near your filter return so it continues to work while the new filter matures, or you can add the new media to the bags now and suspend them in the return flow to grow bacteria on them before you put them in your new filter. Additional to this follow the process in the video and you should be up and running quickly 🍻🍻🍻

    Hi, interesting video. I have have my koi pond for 18 or so years. Main filter is a Shoreham fibreglass 3 bay with vortex, brushes and matting, gravity fed bottom drain Oase 10,000. I intend to upgrade this to a drum at some stage pennies allowing but that's in the future. My secondary filter which is fed mid level by an external Oase 14,000 is currently 3no. Nitritech vortex type drums the first used as a vortex the second and third with matting. I am in the process of re-siting these on to a substantial purpose made decking 8"x4" frame as they over the years had started to tip. Also adding another drum which i bought a few years ago, along with an huge amount of flocor, which will be 4no. drums in total. What in your opinion should be the order of media? My initial plan was to still use a vortex then matting then alfagrog lastly the flocor. Your opinion would be most welcome

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Steve, I think if it where me I would also add brushes to the first bay as relying just on gravity alone in a vortex is quite inefficient. The brushes help a lot to slow the waste down and allow it to drop out before it is pulled through. Then your main mechanical filtration in the next drum. So yes matting packed in the second drum. Third is for biological so if you can convert this to take fluidised K1 that would be ideal. If not, out of the two medias you have, I personally would have the flowcor next as grog clogs up very quickly and can harbor bacteria if it doesn't receive clean water. So I'd leave the grog to the last drum so it gets the cleanest possible water to it.

    Hi Daz, filled my new pond Friday it’s 2400 g and used a dechlorinator. Filtration is a nexus 320 with 50 litres of media currently and a 20” k1 bead off the skimmer line. I Added 3 koi on Saturday, 25cm, 35cm and 45cm when pond was 12.5c. pH when adding fish was 7.5-8 on the Colombo dropper and now 3 days later the pH has increased to 8.5 and the koi are starting to show signs of stress. One koi has developed carp pox and another is hugging the bottom of pond flashing every now and then. Ammonia, nitrite are O and KH is 15 drops. We’ve had a lot of rain, could this increase the pH so much? Do you think it’s new pond syndrome and everything just needs to settle down a bit. Don’t really want to be adding pH reducer if everything just needs time to settle. Just after a bit of advise about what you would do? Pretty sure the koi are just stressed from going into a new environment, im a newbie to the koi world! Currently doing a trickle in trickle out. Sorry for the long post! Any advise would be much appreciated! Stay safe

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate, it sounds like tyou have a great setup there and with so few fish its not going to be ammonia or nitrite causing the issue. Carp pox is just one of those things unfortunately, it can come and go, usually it gets better as the temp warms up. pH of 8.5 is absolutely fine, that wont cause them stress. What may cause stress though is a dramatic change in pH. You will see swings during the course of a day. Its lowest first thing in the morning and climbs during the day as photosynthesis is going on. It peeks at dusk and falls again overnight. Measure it first thing in the morning and last thing at night to get a picture of what its doing. Measure your tap water to, thats useful to know. Rain will cause your pH to drop as rain is acidic but it wont impact much on a pond of that size. I would suggest doing a couple of scrapes on each fish to rule out a parasite.

    One of the old fashion idea's was to actually pee into your pond. I never fancied that idea myself. The other thing you didn't mention is the bacteria multiply quicker in warmer water (+10 to +12). That's another reason you should start feeding slower at the start of the season. My little pond has been kept at 13.5c through most of the winter and the fish fed at least once a day. This has kept my filters running nearly perfectly.

    Haha, yes mate, I did that myself with my very first pond. Thank god that idea isn't still popular. Yes temp does have a bearing on bacteria but I've found that because your koi eat less at lower temps it kind of takes care of itself as you are able to feed less anyway if that makes sense. Starting the new spring season on wheatgerm left over from the end of winter helps to as less ammonia is produced with lower protein foods👍 🍻👍🍻👍

    Hi Kyle, no they don't. None of the test kits are able to test for chloramine. The best way to find out if it is in your supply is to check with your supplier. If you add sodium thiosulphate to take out the chlorine this will also take out the chloramine if its there. Chloramine is a long term build up, it doesn't gas off over time like chlorine does, so you wont have enough chloramine in your tap water to harm your fish straight away. It would need to be left to build up over a long time. It is possible to get test strips that show total chlorine and free chlorine and by subtracting one from the other, in theory, you are left with the amount of chloramine. But test strips are not very accurate.

    Green water can be your best friend. You as pond owner hate it but the fish love it (as long as it not too thick and taking away the oxygen). Green water indicates too many fish, overfeeding, insufficient filtration, and/or some other intervention such as over cleaning, medication treatment, etc. Taking away your obvious indicator can lead to more severe problems. I would limit food for a few days, add nitrifying bacteria, and add a dozen or so food supplement tablets of Folic Acid, 800 mg each tablet, every day until green water clears up. Faster bacteria growth, healthier bacteria, and longer lasting into the cold months, and faster bacteria growth coming out of winter. Just my humble opinion and 25 year experience.

    Hi John, my understanding is that when they are starved of oxygen (when they go in the bottle) they become dormant, similar to a state of hibernation, so they can survive for extended periods of time in this anaerobic environment. They don't need to eat in this state and from what I read they can stay like this for around 12 months. Once they are moved to an environment containing oxygen again they come out of this state.

    I have never had an ammonia test off the bottom of the scale. Never. But nitrite I struggle with so much (and nitrate). Hard water/high pH area. JBL bottle nitrite test seems to vary a lot and shows discrepancy with their ProScan. NTLabs nitrite test (only bought once, never again) might just as well be water, I never get any colour even if JBL is up around 1.0 !!! Not seeing any symptoms in fish. Main pond (poor design, inherited from property vendors - had hoped pond builders would have built me a second/new one by now) currently fine on nitrite but nitrate always high according to ProScan (75) ... plants seem to make no difference (but it's a big pond, 25,000L). I think/hope adding a 24" pressure filter (Advanced+) to my Clover four chamber system has more or less cracked the nitrite here. But I'm setting up three tanks (450gall, 500gall, 800gall - because thte pond builders aren't here yet but one will also be a growing on tank, and another a quarantine/isolation facility) and getting far too high values despite daily water changes, filter start and dropping feeding. Now holding back a lot more. Have used some Sera Toxivec, not sure it really makes a difference (does it affect tests though?). Finding it really frustrating.

    Hi there. Nitrite is notoriously more stubborn to crack than ammonia. I think plastic media in particular can take a very long time to get a colony going. I'm not familiar with any of the products you mention, sorry, the one I use, EA Pure+ gel has worked great for me but I'm not sure if its available where you are? Is there any chance you have something in your source water that is knocking it back? High chlorine / Chloramine levels for example. Again, it may not be available where you are but I really like the Colombo pro test kit. I recommend finding one you like and sticking with it. When you use different ones you often get different results and it can drive you mad. Do you ever have any signs from your koi that the nitrite is high or just on the test kits? For what its worth, the impacts of nitrite are 100% repairable and quite quickly to. If you get in a really high region you can nutralise the impact instantly with salt. High nitrate isn't an issue other than a negative impart on appetite and subsequently growth, plus the encouragement of weed/algae. The best thing I find for nitrate on a continuous basis is a shower filter with the correct ceramic media and a high flow rate.

    Hi mate, I think they can work well at removing nitrate and phosphate but they come with lots of downsides. Obviously contamination of the water and possibilities to harbor bacteria plus they are a lot of work to keep on top of them. They are not for me as I want a sterile environment but I know a lot of people use them successfully 👍

    I have a question about pH. I have a 700 gallon pond and pH is about 8.0 -8.2 I know that adding pH Down product will drop it, but only for a while. How do I bring the pH down and maintain it there without constantly having to add acid?

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi mate, the short answer is , you cant. But also, you don't need to. Koi will adapt to pH from approx. 6 - 9. The hard part for them is adjusting their bodies to a particular pH and once they are there they are very happy. So you can see, stable pH is what you want rather than a specific value. pH 8 or 8.2 is absolutely fine. You would do more harm than good trying to change it and causing fluctuations. You would need to add something to reduce it on a daily basis, consistently, pretty much for ever more once you started. If you still want to do it I would look in to RO water.

    Hi mate just watching this episode. Iv just checked seven trent water supply and can't see chloromine. Could you have a check for us and see if you can see it or any other problems like pH. It says seven but not 100 percent sure. Sorry about spelling chloromine wrong if it is. Thank you.

    Got an nt labs kit kh 4 drops turned yellow and ph to high went dark blue. What is the answer bi carbonate??

  • @DazzleKoi

    @DazzleKoi

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi John, bi-carb will add carbonates and increase you KH but it will also increase pH. When you say pH is high, what is the actual reading? And when did you measure it? pH will be lower in the morning as no photosynthesis has occurred over night. It will gradually increase throughout the day and peak at dusk. pH from 6.5 - 9 is fine for your koi to live in. Its more important that it is stable than it is at any particular point in this range as koi struggle to adjust their bodies to changes in pH. When you start to feed more as the temperature increases your pH will drop also. KH of 4 is ok, mine is always 3, but if you want a bigger buffer you can increase it with bi-carb. But you would need to add it every week once you start.

    Rain water is acidic in nature so if anything the rain will lower the pH. That is high, it might be worth trying another test kit just to confirm. You also need to measure the tap water pH so you know if that can be used to influence your pond pH and also measure your pond in the morning and evening to fully understand what is happening. Algae and weed will impact on the size of the swings you see through the day.

    Hi Lewis, I have added salt to my list of videos but to be honest with you I try to avoid the subject as it just upsets people and ends in arguments. For what its worth, I would never add salt to my pond unless for a specific, short term treatment.
