I just got diagnosed with bipolar and I have bad experience with therapists who are either plain stupid or the university counselors who were too busy to give me more than 6 appointments and made the police cuff me and put me in a police car when I was manic.

As a Licensed Psychotherapist in Washington State, I really appreciated seeing this video. It is packed with information for people to use if they are looking to find a good therapist. I am planning to include it on my list of resources to give clients, since my practice is full, and I get lots of people needing help. Thank you so much for creating this helpful tool!

Someone who would respond to you that way is acting very unprofessionally, IMO. A therapist of value would respect the fact that you know yourself well enough to have gleaned that the two of you were incompatible.

Oh my, how I wish I had this vidio years ago! When your depressed is when you realize I've got to find some help, but unfortunately depression greatly affects your brain function and ability to think things through! When I'm riding high and and my brain power is up to par, I'm playing catch up on all the things I couldn't do, the last thing I want to do is spend the day frying to figure out all the stuff your explaining in this vidio! Thank you for this vidio, I'm sure it will be very helpful for all those struggling to stay alive while deeply entrenched in the darkness of depression!🙂

I completely understand. So what would your ideal therapist look like? Write thos things down. Assign value to each quality. I would make appointments with 3 different therapists for trial meetings Then take someone you trust with you. Now interview them. And add up the value of, your list as well as the things in this video.. and most important tell yourself over and over that you will find the right therapist for you.

The best way to find a good therapist...leave the current one asap when you see it's not working out, don't force it. Also be careful of what you sign, don't give intrusive rights to a therapist that you don't know. If treatment is conditional of giving some rights away, power over you, then walk away

I've been to at least 5 therapist within 3 years. Initially it was for marital but eventually ended up for personal counseling. A lot of times it became a lot of clock watching to me just asking " can you assist me in finding the correct therapist?". I was eventually told that I was full of ish. So now I just keep my issues inside. I am a veteran and that is dangerous.

Man, If someone is really overwhelmed and mentally a mess (I’ve been there) all the things you mentioned would be so confusing 😕. The good thing is that it's written down at the beginning. If you need help do what you can. Save this video and refer back as needed. If you are considering therapy go for it. It's worth it. I know. I've been there.

To be honest, I think it would be great if there would be some kind of helper like "you got this problem and you seem to be this kind of person. So, it can be presumed that this type of therapy would be ideal for you." I think there is tons of stuff. CBT, Psychoanalysis, Gestalt Therapy, Systemic therapy etc. I think this would be great if there would be such kind of help.

For future reference, there is a service available in Florida, California and the state of Washington called Two Chairs that does just this. You have a meeting with a real therapist via zoom, and that therapist helps to connect you with a provider in their network that’ll be a good fit. They may also give you a few references outside of their network so you can choose the best option for you.

A number of therapists will work on a sliding scale. But the more complex your issues, the harder it will be to find a good fit at an affordable price. Sometimes, you might need to start working with one therapist on a particular issue and then change to others over time. This has been my personal experience. If you need a very specialized approach over the long run, you might need to start saving funds in the event that it is more expensive. Not everyone will receive full psychological treatment if their financial resources are strained. But they might still get some relief from shorter term therapy.

If you have a Facebook account, please search for some kind of support group related to your problems, because there are all kinds of Facebook groups relating to all kinds of troubles that people face daily. Talkspace gave me 1 horrible therapist who barely responded and had no other matches for me. Awful. Betterhelp therapists seemed low-level, mine only did half hour sessions, and it took weeks to find someone meanwhile you pay by month..they didn't have a lot of options
