How To Start A Union: Step By Step | The Class Room ft. Sohla & Ham

Over the last couple of years, record numbers of American workers have walked off the job. That makes it sound easy, but as anyone who has done it knows, that’s a big decision. A recent survey found that 63 percent of workers who quit their jobs or left for a new job in 2021 did so because their pay was simply too low, and 57 percent said it was because they “felt disrespected at work.”
Does this sound familiar? Is there something happening in your workplace now, or in your workplace in the future, that you want to change?
Maybe you feel like you’re ready to take action to solve some of these problems in your workplace. More Perfect Union has covered many union drives and labor actions. But the statistical odds are, if you’re watching this from the United States, you probably aren’t in a union, or haven’t had the opportunity to join one. So where do you even start? How do you actually form a union?
We created this video to help provide a simplified guide to the basics of the process. While no short video or guide could give you all the organizing or legal advice you might need throughout the process, we hope this can be a good jumping-off point for you to learn the basics!

I like this saying. An individual at my company started developing interest in unionizing because we were growing extremely fast and rather than injecting capital to employ more workers and give us more resources, they just started to crank the dial on operating like a sweatshop to get everybody to run as hard as they could all day as many days as they could force. I’m sure they turned to union busting, because they had all the big wigs fly in and had huge meeting with several groups of employees, management was shifted around, and lots more meetings were constructed to keep communication open and start trying to give some. There are still lots of things I would like to see change, but the company actually did make some pretty reasonable changes. But it just goes to show, even if you’re not successful, going through the process will yield some benefits.

If the benefits and training are okay now I can only imagine how great they will be with a union. Fortunately I talk to a lot of people at work and train one on one so I'll have plenty of opportunity to get the know and interact with workers who are staying for the long run. Wish me luck guys, I'm playing the long game!. I've already gotten many to voice me their grievances including racial discrimination and having to take another job. Let's do this!

Do you know if your co workers are also facing verbal abuse as well? It's possible that you're not alone and you can ask them "Hey, how do you feel about how (name of your boss) speaks to you?" It's very likely you're not alone but if you are, it doesn't hurt to ask because maybe in the future they will notice how disrespectful their boss is to them and feel safe talking to you about it.

I have a job driving passengers all day as a tour guide and I had an awkward exchange with a coworker today (another driver). We are "required" (illegally - the company would say it's not a requirement) to work off the clock from home setting up itineraries for our tours on our days off. I made a joke about unionizing, and my coworker proclaimed loud and proud that she is very ANTI-union. I said well, you can thank unions for 40 hour work weeks, overtime pay, benefits, vacation pay (every driver clocks about 10 hours of OT per week since we usually work 9-10 hour shifts on an hourly wage of $16/hr). And she said "what kind of propaganda are you watching, unions are useless, this isn't the early 1900's paperboys." I was gobsmacked, I really didn't know what to say. Comparing illegal working conditions to disney fantasies about liberating child laborers was not something I was prepared to address. Our job is generally actually pretty cushy, it was just a joke, but it made me think a lot more seriously about how little we're paid and some of the labor law violations we're expected to voluntarily undertake. I think you should put together a resource for people like me to get more deeply educated about the history and need for unions and how to interact with anti-union sentiment in the workplace from peers. I understand some of the long history of labor exploitation in America and the right to unionize being critical to protecting worker's rights, but I don't really have a way to formulate cohesive, concise arguments to help get others onboard who may have been buying into the concept of unions as organized bullies for a quarter century or more. This overview was nice, but it sort of skipped the entire process and went straight to "okay, you successfully formed a union! now what?" without covering the entire battlefield that is hearts and minds of coworkers.

Is there a viable exit strategy for folks who don't feel represented by their giant union so we can form our own? The massive union that takes a huge chunk out of each of our paychecks has not negotiated a new contract for us and dismisses our complaints. And of course you can start your own. It might not be easy, but if what you are saying is true, you may not be the only one feeling the this way. So you can talk to your coworkers and maybe get together and start your own union.

Otherwise? We're all facing a nightmarish dystopian future that the 4 years of the Trump presidency already evidenced and the Regan/Bush years were a precursor to.

Can all in left YT please start educating people about both: (1) the difference between right-authoritarian vs. right-libertarian; & (2) the difference between left-authoritarian vs left-libertarian? It’s long overdue. People aren’t cattle or sheep: They will understand if we educate them. Though we need to educate (& learn) about all the nuance.

This sounds like political compass brain tbh. There are more factors in politics than just “libertarian vs authoritarian” and “right vs left”. I think what’s more useful is comparing different specific strains of political ideologies, going off a material basis and not an idealist one. So like neoliberals (arguably the most prevalent one today unfortunately), right-wing libertarians, neoconservatives, anarcho-communists, Marxist-leninists, Maoists, etc.

The word Union is not mentioned in National Labor Relations. National Labor Relations is the 1935 language that gives workers the statutory right to organize and collectively bargain. Using the word Union is counterproductive. Not agood start if you are thinking long term.

Can someone please explain the CA labor union’s argument that we should abide by 1977 law that a tractor must be manned, even with advances in automation, and a labor shortage?? Kinda screwing over the farmer when they need work done. No labor avail, but can’t use automation. Loose, loose. Please, ask the CA Farm Bureau for comment. And for reference, I’m a progressive dem living in the Central Valley and whose “job depends on Ag”. Just working 60 hrs/week to feed people who think we are trying to kill them. “No pesticides, but I want perfect fruit.” We can do less, but consumers have to be tolerant of visual imperfections, and occasional use of stronger things to eliminate detrimental invasive species. ❤️

RN here.. the hospitals are shuttering, especially in rural areas. The Managment blame “no nurses, no CNAs!”. This is untrue. The Managment has made the work environment so terrible that they can only use travelers. They get $$$ if there’s no “staff” and only Travelers. This costs US THE TAXPAYER triple for a nurse. Do we have that to waste? And that’s not even bringing up the issue that these corporations are comming in our communities, exploiting them and not paying anything back in. They abuse white male patients and staff because these corporations are all Woke, and Woke is exclusionary. This is Idaho. No nursing union. This must change.

You have stumbled into the major contradiction with Capitalism. We witnessed the same problems in the early 20th century and the solution was made to alter the economic model from Liberalism towards Keynesianism (or for some countries Socialism). I am curious to know which scholars you may have come across that offer a solution which maintains a (neo) Liberal economic model?

Unions sell out real workers for political gains and power. California truckers protested Assembly Bill 5 made for Uber gig workers during a pandemic because "Unions" celebrated laws making it harder for all types of drivers to be independent. The same is happening with all types of gig work and there is a heavy promotion that it only provides great things. It is a trojan horse to stricter work environments and self-loathing coworkers that hate to see anyone happy.

Unions aren't perfect because they are made up of people who aren't perfect. That said they are better than the alternative. Look how much better life got for Americans when Unions still had power before corporations found sneaky ways of politicizing the issues of unions and undermining them. Wages have stagnated and even decreased while profits continue to increase.
