Secret Union Tactic Fuels Unprecedented Labor Wins

The practice of joining a workplace with the secret aim of organizing it is called “salting.” And until now, it's been the mostly secret ingredient in a once-in-a-generation wave of union organizing that’s spread from Starbucks and Amazon to other Fortune 500 companies in the Covid-19 era. Bloomberg's Josh Eidelson explains the tactic's recent revival after exclusive visits to undercover training sessions over the past year.

    seems like the ability to salt a company is dependent upon being able to recruit young people to relatively entry-level roles. could be harder to salt into any role requiring more skill/experience/education, no? actually would be more interesting to see how salting is accomplished in companies hiring for mostly for more skilled roles. also, did you know average retirement age in china is LOWER (much lower actually) than in france?

    More skilled roles are usually on the management side. The people in the entry level positions are the ones in most need for a union.

    @@esgee3829 You are right. I didn't really think about other fields. I guess I just focused on the retail employees. The others you mentioned (minus health care workers IMO) are definitely fields that need a union, especially oil field workers. They are paid well, but they are also worked to death. My wife is a nurse and it would be difficult for me to see the need for a union in a field that allows you to work anywhere in the world, basically name your salary AND make your own schedule. Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, x-ray techs, physical therapists, etc. They are all pretty well taken care of. I realize you did not ever mention anything about who needs a union. You just would like to see how salting works in companies that look for more skilled workers and as far as that goes, I'm kinda curious to see how that works myself

    I’m an entry-level engineer at a company where MGMT is old fashioned in labor relations and medium, but growing quickly. Every one of my engineer coworkers dislikes management’s strategies and their lies but it’s frustrating how hard it is to detach ourselves from our middle management which also hate their job but will always bow to our common boss.

    It is crazy to me that the US doesn't even have something as basic as freedom of association. The fact that you need to get past all these hurdles to even be _allowed_ to exercise your individual human right to join an organization is wild. This is something that anyone should be able to just do whenever they want to. Why should someone else have veto power over your choice on whether or not to be a member? That is straight up authoritarian.

  • @nnhk0056

    @nnhk0056

    It is authoritarian, no one should have that power. Including the unions that then mandate joining them upon being hired as a condition of employment.

  • @saviorself1164

    @saviorself1164

    Mandating new hires to join the union is what gives the union its strength. Not allowing that mandate is one of the pillars of Right to Work, which is one of the things that has crippled labor unions. Not all companies need a union. My company, for instance, treats us pretty well. However, the companies that have been unionized were unionized for a reason and without all of the employees belonging to the union, the union itself is weakened. Unions are a show of solidarity for employees vs employers. Without that solidarity, the employees are going to be walked all over

  • @sepilokfui

    In the United States, workers have the right to engage in "protected concerted activity" (such as collective bargaining, strikes, protesting working conditions, etc.) with or without a union. And you can't get fired or disciplined for exercising those rights. I would rather take my chances on my own, or with my co-workers who actually want to be there with me, than trust these professional liars . . . they have their own motivations and those motivations aren't about helping me do my job. If they are willing and able to lie their way into a job that has application processes and requirements, do you really think they won't lie to you? Sheesh. If you want a union, be about it upfront and be prepared for people to agree or disagree with your position. Why are we turning into a nation of decepticons?

In my particular area, I know the person that owns the commercial property where they are located. He has indicated that Starbucks is not renewing their lease and not going to be moving anywhere else, they’re going to be closing that at that location. How’s that going to work out for everyone?

    @@Nice_Fella Based on some information, I just looked up, they are joining “Workers United” a derivative of SEIU. The workers don’t realize this, but they are being unionized not for their benefit. Starbucks company will just add more cost onto the product to cover whatever was bargained for. The union organization, and the people that run it are the ones who are going to benefit. Of course, is this is not the kind of a job working at Starbucks, following a recipe making coffee most people want to do. Who would do this for a career? Based on the information that I’ve gotten from others, Starbucks product is first class, and the workers do their job very well. It gets down to whether or not competition, offering the same kind of product not unionized can take some of their business away.
