Why the U.S. is seeing a record number of labor strikes

It's being called the "hot labor summer." From Hollywood to hotels, workers have been walking off the job -- recent data from Cornell University shows around 119,000 U.S. workers were on strike as of May. Seth Harris, former acting U.S. Labor Secretary in 2013 under then-President Obama, joins CBS News to discuss what's driving the recent wave of strikes and how increased strike activity could affect the economy.

Pilot for Southwest here. After a 99% vote for a strike authorization, the company appears to not think we're serious. It has been two months since the vote and even this last week, negotiations went backward. They pulled their offer for improved parental leave, which we affectively do not have. We want industry standard disability. As it stands, when you run out of sick pay on STD, you are effectively excommunicated. You lose all benefits including health care; you go on COBRA. Keep in mind, if you so much as break your foot, you cannot work as a pilot until you can function fully without a cast or brace. So needing STD is not only very likely, but financially crippling if you do. That's why the union has requested to end meditation. Under the railway labor act, we cannot just strike. It has to go through channels, and the government can intervene. And I'm really hoping that Biden and congress will support us (because they can prevent us from striking). Until then, we continue to work with the same income as 2020. On the off chance that we join the movement, I would be careful who you buy plane tickets from as all the other airlines have at least an agreement on principle.

I was fortunate to work 35 years at a company that considers their employees as members and shares profits with them. The responsibility of the members is to find waste in the processes and work to eliminate it. In essence they can increase profits through the elimination of waste and by doing so, all of the members receive a semi-quarterly profit sharing payment with an equal amount going into their 401K retirement plan. This is in addition to a % of their salary every pay period going into the 401K. Since the % is applied company wide against a member’s salary, it behooves all members from the CEO to the lowest line member working together instead of against each other to drive the company’s success. This was the system set-up by the company founders nearly 75 years ago and practiced still.

Because the working class is getting fed up with everything rising in price except their pay. Greedy CEOs and executive staff are more concerned with billionaire mega wealth status than paying staff a living wage. Workers are tired of it and not having it anymore. Goverment may need to step in and make companies pay employees a 3% cost of living increase every year. Or based on the companies earnings.

This is such a disingenuous "interview". There is no mystery here. There is no revelation. Labor has been suppressed for generations. Whether it be laws, or monopolies in ownership, or new business models that have purposely squeezed out labor. All of this is by design while people get less and prices go up and their employer's profits go up. Labor isn't do this, employer greed is. They will not be happy until employees pay employers to work for them.

Are you offering them a job or just spitting out your thoughts? The grass is always greener somewhere else, you could probably find a better city, a better state, a better country elsewhere… but a lot of people have years invested into the job they’re at, just like the city, state, or country they live in. Every single person has their own motivations in life and nothing is as simple as throwing the towel in and quitting. The difficult part is starting all over again. As for those who stay and fight for future generations, they’re the strong ones. Some people love their jobs but hate the hours, or the working conditions or some aspect that needs to be improved upon. You can live in Chicago for example and love it, but you hate the crime. Sure, you can go elsewhere, to another city, possibly leave your family and friends, the job you have, the house you live in, or you can do something about it, remain and help to better the city that you love. These labor movements are a demand for justice in corporate America and the demand for fair pay, decent, livable wages and better working conditions. Just like the Jefferson’s, everyone wants to move up, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that…
