How to Start a Podcast (Complete Tutorial) 🎤 Equipment & Software

A while back, I published the most popular podcasting tutorial on KZread, and in this video I wanted to make sure you have all of the latest and greatest information so that you can get your podcast setup the right way.
Podcasting has changed my life! It's helped me build a huge audience, develop a deeper relationship with my subscribers and customers, make more money, and most importantly make a bigger impact in the world.
All you need to do now is take action and learn how to start a podcast!
In this particular video, I'll be highlighting the equipment and software you need to get started - all without breaking the bank. My goal is to take away all of the excuses you have that are holding you back from starting your podcast. Trust me, because it took me forever to start my podcast back in July of 2010.
Things have changed since then (hint: it's A LOT easier to start a podcast today than it was before), and so make sure you watch through this video about equipment and software, and then subscribe so you don't miss the other two videos in this tutorial series!

This is the series to watch if you want to get into podcasting, I came across it while researching how to get started on my own podcast and it has been immensely helpful to me. Thank you Pat, you really get across the finer points of what and whatnot to do as well as the basics ! Watching your videos gives me more confidence in my ability to produce my own show and get my audience built up sooner than later. I was about to make all the mistakes you warned about, because frankly, I had no idea what to do. I have been writing online opinion columns for years and I have a great audience with that, but I wanted to get into podcasting to get those thoughts and messages out to my audience and hopefully gain new followers in the process. Now I feel that I have more confidence in doing this thanks to your video tutorials. ~ Rob D.

Thanks so much, Pat! Your timing was impeccable. I have just started recording a podcast with my son, and I purchased the Samson a few months ago because it got similar reviews to the ATR2100, but it was about $20 cheaper. I figured if I didn't like it, I would try the ATR2100 for our second one, so we each have one. However, after watching your review, I'm going to stay with the Samson for my second one, as well. I did have some problems with the stand for it, and I saw that was a negative in the reviews for it. Some people said to just pick up a better stand to go with it, so I will probably do that. Thanks, again, Pat!

Is possible on a Mac very easily without any extra equipment (probably on a pc too but I’m not familiar)-you just plug in two usb mics and make an aggregate audio device in preferences. I won’t explain it all here because there are peeps out there doing so in a much clearer fashion. Search KZread or the web and there are plenty of great tutorials. It is surprisingly easy

Use Zoom or Zencastr. Or just do it over the phone, assuming you both have separate recorders / mics. You’ll have to sync the audio in post, but people will think you’re in the same room!

Pat, we have a ton of amazing pro equipment leftover from my musician live gigging days: Allen & Heath 16:2 Mix Board, AKG C535B condenser mic (now discontinued...the best vocal mic in the studio I ever heard), AKG D5 mic, Shure SM58, SPX90 reverb, plus more. The irony is that we are NOT USING any of it: we are using a simple Samson Q2U mic directly into a MacPro, and do all remote recordings through Zoom now instead which is an improvement in quality over Call Recorder through Skype which is what we used to do (Note: we will be switching to Squadcast soon, so we can record directly into an uncompressed .wav file). I use Audacity free version for post production, a video editing tool I like, and then publishing all our content through Libsyn. We think we are getting a good sound quality (are now up to episode #76) - but being somewhat of an audio file I always feel the sound quality could be further improved. However, I love the simplicity of our current setup up - and our listeners care more about our content anyway. Do you think it would be overkill to use all of that pro live music equipment I already own for the podcast, or are we cheating ourselves by not using it?
