The Rodecaster Pro: Everything You Need to Make a Podcast

With no hyperbole, the Rodecaster Pro has totally changed my audio production workflow. I haven’t been this excited about a new tool in a very long time! Here’s an in-depth review of the Rodecaster.
•June 2020 Update: Rode added a ton of features with the Firmware 2.1 update! In addition to this review, I cover that update here:
• Rodecaster Pro 2.1 Off...
•Time Markers:

4:15 - Features
8:13 - Pros

Remember though, that the most important step to creating a podcast is to simply MAKE A PODCAST. You don’t need a ton of fancy equipment before you can begin.

In Spring 2022, Rode released the RODECaster Pro II, which is a pretty significant upgrade and definitely worth checking out. The original is still awesome too though. I've got a basic walk through of the new one here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qI6H27OOZtrJpto.html

Just got mine, thanks for all the information. If anyone experiences any noise in your mic line, make sure your XLR cables are not crossing with any power cables. Took me a few to figure out, but my monitor power supply was crossing and introducing feedback into my mic line.

As I educate myself, getting ready to dip my toe into the podcasting waters, I found Tom's video about the Rodecaster among the best I've viewed. Only thing not given was the price, though of course I easily went out and found it. Tom, you are an outstanding presenter.

Thanks so much for this review. Just pulled the trigger and ordered one and a couple Procaster mics and misc equipment! I feel like you saved me a lot of time because before I found your review I was thinking I needed to bone up on my Garageband skills and was playing with with it, trying to find a good eq for my voice, which was taking a LOT of fiddling. Now I can forego that and just concentrate on content!

Something to consider, the Rodecaster Pro can be used as an audio interface, so if you have a laptop or other computer handy you can record the tracks to software in the computer, and within the computer software you can hit pause. You can also export the final product to mp3 right from the software.

Dude, so gotta get one of these. So love your demo of just how easy it can be. LOVED your point about how fast you can have your podcast up with no editing. That is insane and “exactly” what I’m shooting for. I hate editing. So getting one this year. Your vids are insanely good. I’m getting hooked and binging them. Super appreciate your down to earth realness rather than some forced ‘performance.’ Thank you.

I know for sure that the AI-1 can connect to my iPad thanks to the USB-C and be self powered by the iPad Pro 11 inch. I've already recorded some videos that way. Super cool for a mini recording kit!

I'd been recording my podcast with a Mac in a sound room with the pretty decent Blue Snowball mic. Since the lockdown, I've been recording with Garageband on my iPhone with a homemade pop filter, and recording on a bunch of pillows as soundproofing - and I can't really tell the difference. Before I forget, I DO LOVE The Mario Brothers-esq intro/outro! Takes me back to when there was fun in video games! You must be a sick person, because you have a clean desk! Lol! Thanks for the super peachy keano description of this faaaaaabulous piece of gear. Makes me want one. Then again, I've always wanted to just DRIVE a Lambo! But LIKE the Lambo, you didn't mention p-r-i-c-e....I'm wondering if because it was astronomical, or you're just trying to be discreet. You said it was backordered, so I'm thinking they are selling quite a few of these and maybe they WON'T be astronomical...hoping! Thanks agin. Fun time, great themesong, great product description, whawat moah could I ask fora? Y'all. First time viewer, won't be the last! Whoo hoo!

Oh my gosh, this is one of the greatest comments I’ve ever read, haha! Thank you. The Rodecaster is usually available for about $600, which isn’t cheap, but I think is definitely worth it. Once it’s been out a bit longer, I’m guessing it’ll go in sale from time to time at a cheaper price. I’m glad you like the outdo music- most people really hate it, but I like it! Like you said, it reminds me of things that are FUN!

Great video, waiting for mine to come. I liked your review a lot but two things stood out the most for me was 1) regarding changing from a wave file to mp3 and 2), which to me is the most important, was to start your podcast now and not wait to get your gear, do it now! So with that, I will start with my content and get going. Thanks!!

Hey Tom! Great review of the RCP. I finally received mine and unfortunately the mic channels are SOOO noisy and the headphone amps are as well. I'm sending it back for an exchange. Crossing my fingers! That's not quite why I was writing though. I did want to ask about the noise on your side. You said it's quiet and I think your experience is the norm as others have said it's pretty quiet. Also, what setup did you end up using? Mics etc... I'm using SM7b's but I may end up getting a shotgun as well for video. So please do tell in regards to your mic setups. Love your vids. Thanks!

Hey Mike! Sorry to hear about your issues, mine is super quiet on all fronts, so hopefully it’s just a fluke. I have a PodMic on order, but I’ve mostly been using an SM58 and SM57 pair with good results. I haven’t had a chance to try it with an SM7B, but I might try and borrow one for a test.
