I just got my first router with a flush trim bit. I had to make a plate to replace a Bose 8 inch sub and 3 inch midrange in the doors of a 2002 Corvette to fit 6x9's. Thanks to watching all of your videos, I had to no problem knocking those plates out.

Hey Man, I'm kitting out my van into a camper and have gone a little off track and got right into my stereo install since watching your videos. I've just made myself a crude router table that works a treat and today just made my first complex shape using your technique. Actually it's my first time using a router and man I'm having fun. love that wheel technique , i fit dry wall for a living and its not that often i have to do awkward shapes but next time i do i will be using that technique , the usual way i do it is by taking about 5 measurements and then joining them up to get my contour your way is better , good vid mate

That's fantastic! I can't imagine the cost tho for this type of box, not only for the number of work steps and extra working of upholstery, but also how many pieces of MDF have to be used to get that depth. Lot of waste tracing hollow shapes. Probably took you at least 3 sheets of MDF to do this box, no doubt. Designing for particular spaces, especially small ones is quite the chore. I myself am doing one currently for a single cab Ranger, and MAN, there is so little room behind the seats (and not enough under them to even fit an amp on the floor) that I'm struggling to even get a 0.7-0.85 cu ft box back there while letting the seats MOSTLY slide back and recline the way they could factory. What a challenge this is. I guess I'm going to be stuffing with poly fill pretty heartily to try and make it work out alright.

Ive been thinking about how to make an overhead console and the the circle system thing is perfect to get the the shape of the roof line.

this is amazing!! I can't wait to learn about how to calculate and port this kind of box!!

Why can you use the round bearing guide on the MDF, but have to use the square one when using the ABS guides? Great videos!

I jus started molding for a fiberglass enclosure for my 17' Rubicon in the same location; IM SUPER GLAD to see your also gonna use the cab screw to anchor your enclosure also. I was worried I shouldn't have done it lol

Just found your channel and subscribed. I was surfing for Jeep Audio upgrades and have watched all 22 videos! Really great videos! You've given great advice and techniques, but I have to say as a Jeep owner I would have had you stick with your original placement of the sub behind the passenger seats somewhere in the cargo area. Jeeps are meant to ride with the top down with plenty of passengers, :) LOL! I would not want to be a passenger with a sub 6" to 8" inches from me. Your client has a hard top and maybe is not planning to take the top off often and have rear passengers, so it maybe the placement matches their driving style.

The much more comedic version of this process is how I built my first set of kick panels when I was 16. Nothing but a drill, a jigsaw, a tape measure, and a pencil. If you can afford to waste the wood, it's not a bad alternative to fiberglass for complex shapes and it' obviously way less mess.

How the heck do you manage to calculate port volume for a box of this crazy design profile with a given driver? Strangely enough I was trying to figure a box of something like this for my Jeep JK using two ( one each fender well ) type r 12's using two PDX-1000's. just something completely different from everyone using just a plain ole speaker box......BORING. Hi Mark I want to know how to get the router bits you use

I replaced my center console on my old jeep with a single 10" sealed box. That way I didn't lose any cargo space or seat maneuverability. I did lose my middle console storage and one rear cupholder, but I put in an under the driver seat safe and threw out shit I didnt need and I never noticed the missing storage space at all. Did miss the passenger cup holder a bit.....but could actually hear music when the roof and doors were off and I was on the highway!

complete novice here.. but I did something similar using sheet foam from lowes, making a stacked shape and smoothed out the corners. Then glassed over that into a clamshell, removed all the foam and ended up with a form-fit fiberglass box.

Great video as always. You may have explained this before but why do you recommend the square bearing over the round at certain times?

how far should port be from back of sub box thanks

why wouldnt you use the adjustable curve tool to mimic the curve in the vehicle and bypass all the work with the jigsaw?

Kind of like a Bob Ross for car audio lol

Curious as to why you do not use cardboard to capture the shape and then transfer to the wood for final? Great work from what I have seen thus far.

Another killer vid man. One question i got tho is, whats the difference between that square bearing vs the normal round bearing? You said something about "eating into ur piece" what do u mean? Dont round bearings do the same thing? I would think that a round bearing would fallow curves alot better than a square bearing. Im pretty sure im wrong but i cant make sense of it yet. Thanks again for all the tips and vids you make, ive been stressing about my build for a while and ive barely started but im using alot of ur techniques, ive spent alot on tools lol but the right tools make things so much better.

+HumbolSkitso the round bearing won't have enough contact area against the slippery plastic that the adjustable curve is made from. The round bearing keeps spinning and heats up and eats into the adjustable curve. The square bearing stops and glides right along. Have you ever made a box out of closed cell foam ?

Is there a way to kerf a solid sheet of mdf to make the box, rather than layering the box? I know you did a kerfing video a long, long time ago, but you should revisit that. Do a tutorial for kerfing for complex curves, with different depth cuts to maximize strength and minimize wasted material, cost, and work. I know the layering style wastes wood no matter what, but thick boxes waste a lot of wood. But one of the advantages is the internal texturing using a waveform along the wall to remove the hollowness of the box due to complex surfaces as opposed to flat surfaces. I wonder how this could be done without layering, maybe using kerfing with a thick veneer material that's solid but still flexible? Also, where did you find 1/8" mdf? I can only find hdf, or the clipboard material with the rough, textured side and the smooth, almost glossy side, in 1/8". 1/8" hdf is pretty flexible itself, so I'd think 1/8" mdf would be even more flexible.

Mark, hello from Russia! Could you explain why you didn't use resin in this project? Yes, resin is stinky, but it's will be faster to build a box.

Max Elkonin , Obviously I am not Mark but I believe that he is just using this as a teaching moment. People use this technique and he is just showing us how to do it. You're very correct, mat and resin would be WAY easier, cheaper, and would probably give you a better box.

+nicholas hardy I do use cardboard from time to time. The thin strips of MDF are made from my wood scraps so I put them to good use. :)

Just fyi for all of us non sponcered builders that dont want to spend 60/300$ on an adjustable curve . At Walmart in the children's toy section where they have the 1-2 $ toy bens they have what looks like a plastic chain . Its 36" in length and can be linked to what ever length . It bends left to right and front to back . Best of all its 2$ ... They are blue and green at my Walmart .

The adjustable curves start at $20, so first off, nice of you to exaggerate to try to make a point ($300? lol come on...) Secondly I am familiar with the curve you are referring to, it doesn't give you a smooth curve, it looks jumbled and for lack of a better term... "crappy". It also doesn't have the surface area to allow for sticking with surface tape. If you really are a builder you will know that tools easily pay for themselves when you use them to complete a job and charge what your work is worth. The sooner you learn that your work is valuable and stop focusing on price and selling value the sooner your customer will stop focusing on price. You will be on your way to not caring what a tool costs because you know it can easily pay for itself.

Man you left room on the left side of the box going twords the rear of the jeep . Why? You could have used that and lowered the top so it didnt block the window . Your work is awesome man it really is , but the box being above the window line kills this build for me .

Andrew.s. Mcmurtrie The carpet is, often, a poor match to the panel, it's rare that you can grab the carpet from a spot and duplicate it onto some wood. The carpet is moulded in 3d where as the wood will against the surface in a 2d position.

Then you are likely a very talented artist. Us normal people do not see the world like you do, trust me when I tell you that, for the average person, the carpet sucks for template work. You have to be able to visualize, in 3d, to be able to use it and someone like me can't do that. Every single time I have used the carpet, I end up tossing it to the side and grabbing the card board.

Man all that work to make that amp rack look factory , hours or work to make a stacked box and easily 4/5 times the cost and you build the box that dosent follow the body and sets in the window 🤔

Why you just sale the boxes to people's who don't have the tools to build the a speaker box

If you're making a box by the window, won't the box look big and easily noticeable in the window. Don't you want it flush and lower than the window?
