I’m doing something wrong lol my axe doesn’t even hardly dent the wood. Brand new. Do I need to sharpen it or something

Probably not a sharpness issue unless it's truly, truly dull. Axes for splitting are generally not very sharp. Think about a few factors: How long is the log you're splitting? A long log splits harder. Does it have any knots? They get in the way. How heavy is your axe? A light axe will have a harder time getting the force necessary. Beyond that, it may just be a practice thing. Form can really matter. Give the axe its initial momentum with the back swing, then move with it as it comes down. Sometimes people unconsciously fight the axe as it comes down, and it'll slow it down.
