How to Split Shot for Bass

Спорт

In today's video I talk about a technique that is greatly overlooked in the sport of bass fishing today. The Split Shot rig is one of the best rigs ever created when it comes to catching bass during some of the toughest times of year. It has been overshadowed by the drop shot, ned rig, Neko rig, Shaky head, etc. I go over the setup, how to use, when to use, and why you should use the split shot rig. Doodling and Splitshotting were the ticket back 80’s and 90’s. Just dumped my Splitshotting rod. Should have kept it.

Nice vid and the detail introduction to a new rig (to me) for bass fishing. What is the size of the hook? And do I just cast, let it hit bottom and start reeling?

Hey Calvin, I use a 1/0 Owner All Purpose Worm Hook. It is important to use the smaller size hook so that it does not over power the presentation of the worm. Yep, make sure to stay in contact with the bottom at all times and it'll get bit. Thanks for watching!

@@TheBassHookup I see that you lifted your rod in the vid, I don't have to do such if I don't have a rocky bottom right?

Dood that pond is at your house? Sooo when do I get an invite to come fish haha. Hey man I grew up using those proworms, #64 Smoke/Purple flake leech was the key to any lake back in the day. I still throw those leeches too. Does your dad/uncle pour those proworms? I used to fish Elk Grove Bass Club with one of the guys who used to pour those proworms so I'm guessing your in the Sac or Wilton area maybe if you're related to them? I used to fish split shot but I stopped. I used to bite the split shot closed on my line, chipped a tooth so I started using pliers to close them on the line and its very easy to crimp them to tight. I used split shot rigs for my kids cause it was cheap and I'll never forget at Folsom Lake my boy was fishing with a split shot, hooked into about a 4lber, got her at the boat and once she saw us she bolted back down and snap! My boys line broke right at the split shot, I crimped it to hard and damaged the line. I felt horrible that he lost that bass. Haven't thrown a split shot rig since. Everyone I know stopped fishing that rig for that reason. Sure its fun, quick and cheap if you're just going for fun but if you happen to catch a big bass when you're fishing for fun you better get on your knees and pray that split shot wasn't crimped to hard cause it turns a fun day into a crap day real quick when your boy starts crying. haha. If I'm going for quick/cheap now I just use a bullet weight with a rubber stopper. Just as quick and cheap as a split shot without damaging the line.

Lol, the community I live in has 5-6 ponds in it with bass, so it's not actually my lake. And no, no one in my family pours the ProWroms. Do you remember the binky bug? That was a killer split shot bait too. Surprisingly we never had any issue with the line breaking at the split shot, maybe the 8lb mono we would use was pretty strong stuff. And we always crimped em with our teeth so it wouldn't be too tight on the line. Lots of alternatives to the split shot now but it still works great.

@@TheBassHookup Awwww ya! So you are local to the Sac area then. Those were custom made around the area too I believe. I don't recall who made them but I remember going down to Delta Bait and Tackle back in the day and picking a bunch up. They were killer up at Berryessa and out at the delta. I used to pour worms and made some molds with plaster of paris out of those binky bugs.
