@olo I play cello. You still kind of bounce the bow but you just need to use a little more of your arm because you can’t rely completely on gravity.

I’m was drummer before I picked up a viola, so spiccato was intuitive for me to understand. The motion of a stick hitting a drum feels very similar to a bow bouncing on a string.

I joined orchestra pretty late, so I had to start off doing spicatto right away. I practiced spicatto a lot, but this had the unfortunate side effect of making spicatto the default setting for me during eighth note runs. That means Everytime I had to play eighth note runs in orchestra, I played them with spicatto. I’ve gotten over it now, but my teacher was very confused and frustrated with me for a decent bit of time 😅

Dear Ray Chen, I would suggest a new way of Bowing developed by the Violin 🎻 Maestro Late.M.S.Gopala Krishnan. Who will play in this way. " Thaa Ki ta , Thaa ki ta, Thaa ki ta ......." for several minutes which when played continuously will sound like the plucking notes in a Mandolin. It is very tough to play in a violin 🎻 but he , being a Maestro did it effortlessly and effectively. Please listen to his Solo concert, towards the end of the main piece , he will play it vigorously. Literally you will be in Heaven.
