Honglish is a kind of English language which we unnaturally speak all the time. Sometimes, we find it so funny to speak in this way and didn't feel anything wrong. But we need to level up our English speaking and sound more native if we need to communicate with foreigners.

Wah, I've lived in HK for 29 years and have long been flummoxed by the accent - I've wanted to be able to learn it and produce it, but I never could. Now I have some insight into how it's formed. No linking! Stressing more words! This is genius-level gold. This is one of our intangible heritages.

Tiffany you are spot on! Honglish is quite harsh sounding generally compared to English spoken by Europeans. I wondered if it’s the result of having Cantonese as the mother tongue! We can also identify mainlanders from Hong Kongers by the way they pronounce the “th” , “v”, “n” sounds!

Tiffany, your HK English is really fine. Some English teachers in HK have no idea how bad their HK English is and have the guts to teach conversational English, thus, ruining hundreds and thousands of the young children and that a shame. My niece and nephew in HK tried to talk to my American born kids in Honglish and my kids said it sounds a little off but they have no problems understanding my niece because I have a HK accent although my English was mostly taught by Canadian nuns. But I am not sure if my American born grandkids will understand Honglish, I wish they do.

I am studying in form 5 in a English mediated secondary school and my brother is studying in form 1 . I speak in a relatively native accent because all my classes are taught in English and i have to prepare for the oral examination and my brother’s English classes mainly teach grammar and fundamental english, and he speaks in a relatively Hong Kong English accent. But I think I rather speak like a native but my brother is proud of his accent. He does not think speaking Konglish is a problem, maybe he still doesn't need to worry about the dse. On the surface, it is quite right what hk english is. If you want to learn more, except for practising mispronunciation which should never be encouraged, you could (1) emphasize the correctness in grammar always, (2) think of the entire sentence in your mind but never on your feet, (3) stop using idioms but show off hard vocabularies in a way that your audience have to keep looking them up in a dictionary

You do speak with a very heavy Hong Kong accent wor! It's a joke. Hongkongers say or write wor and la just for fun and are clever enough to tell it's not real English. To be fair, some Hongkongers with higher level of English speak English more fluently and don't speak with so many 'efforts'. But most of what you said is true. Haha.

Personally I think learning English is a very serious matter. Some people learned English as something to do, some people learn it because the job requires. some learn it to show off. What I cannot stand is that people speaking English in phrases and broken sentences, not a complete thoughts which is what you hear on Jade Channel another Hong Kong media. As long as Hong Kong people speak Cantonese with the lazy accent, they will have a hard time with the accurate English pronunciation.I don't know how many times I heard the name Nancy and pronounce Lancey. I am a little bit critical about English because I have studied English for over 30 years and I did a lot of technical writing in my career as an engineer. I understand the Hong Kong accent is very hard to lose and I went through all the difficult hurdles that most learners have experienced. In order to be a good English speaker I have tried to minimize and eliminate that Hong Kong accent but I still catch myself every now and then. That's why I made that comment.
