其實兩部英國字典牛津與劍橋都收錄兩個發音kandɪdeɪt/ 和ˈkandɪdət/的國際音標，只不過牛津只提供kandɪdeɪt的真人發聲連結，而劍橋只提供ˈkandɪdət/的發聲連結，而剛好主持人只懂click 連結聽發音而不懂看國際音標，又只懂查劍橋字典，所以誤以為只有ˈkandɪdət才正確。實際上兩個讀音都是英國通行的讀音。美國字典meriam Webster 同樣收綠此兩個讀音。根本無關所謂英式和美式英語的分別。所以話，唔怕你唔識英文，只怕你識一半唔識一半。

@@ricklauhk01 : People normally use the word "accent" to describe the different regional variation of English in the UK. With Chinese, it is normally "dialects". Cos English uses the same writing systems. (Alphabet.) And Chinese, uses different writing systems. (Hans brush strokes, or Manchu brush strokes, and Arabic I think not including Korean or Japanese scripts) And also can be different speaking systems too. This is why it is classified as a "dialect". With English, the writing system is the same, the speaking is different.

There is something deeply problematic about commenting on people's pronunciation so that you can promote a language class. If you understand what the person is saying, then that is all that matters. These standards that measure "correctness" are constructed within specific cultural and historical contexts and reflect the biases and assumptions of these contexts. Going around telling people they don't say things the right way based on these standards is an attack on their identity, their histories and lived experiences.

It might sound rude, especially use excuse "challenge" to indirectly promote language lesson centre, but it's quiet common advertisement method. Since it's english, it might be quiet easy for adult to understand the other party talks especially if they're used to listen to lot of different people and accent, but conv with children sometimes it's hard (once I couldn't ask for water bcs the other party was an elementary school and they couldn't understand what I said), that's why there's RP (not to mention cantonese/chinese, wrong tones, could be different meaning/word)

@@genevieve8314 I don't think that just because it's a "common" advertisement method makes it right, and I think your example actually points out how more than just telling people they have to speak with a "correct" accent, they can learn to understand many different accents. Because there is no one "correct" accent and to decide which accent they should be able to speak with and understand does not only limit who they can communicate with, but also suggests that there are some who are worthier than others to talk to.

It’s inappropriate to say somebody’s pronunciation is wrong. There are varieties of English. There’s even a field of studies in Linguistics called “World Englishes”. We learn a language to get messages through, not to display how much of a dictionary you have memorized.

Improved English doesn't mean just pronunciation. It includes phonics, grammar and sentence structure. Pronunciation is probably the least important. What good is pronunciation if you can't property spell a word or construct a sentence properly.

The testing is about checking the official and standard pronunciations. If you say "multiple accepted" pronunciations, which mean that those were not correct in the first place but as time goes by, people tend to "accept" as those have become understandable.

@@MrJason919 too bad during the test they didn't say that but rather "do you know how to say this word",if they want extreme accurate one from a certain dictionary they can say that,but the case is they didn't,they claim those who actually got the pronunciation correctly to be "mispronouncing" when that's not even the case,accents affect a person's pronunciation and not only that but there are so many official accepted pronunciations even for one word,as long as they didn't mess up the general pronunciation(for example:pronouncing water as wah-da or all as "aw",etc),they are correct and shouldn't be seen as "mispronunciation" when it's really not,they barely mispronounced it

I believe the first word “Candidate” can be spoken two different ways. The way people said it in your video who you considered wrong is the US version. Your way is the UK version. Everything else is fine though.

Don't be! Accents shouldn't be demonized. It's natural to have an accent due to our language environment/ language transfer and many other reasons. Be proud of being able to speak a second / third/fourth language because you've worked hard on it!

I totally understand why people get offended for this kinda videos, like how that British guy reacted. I found a lot of these so called English teachers don't understand some basic linguistic fact. E.g. language is descriptive. You don't get to teach people how they should pronounce a word unless they are incomprehensible. English has so many dialects. In US colloquial English it's 100% acceptable to say candida(/ei/)t and wo(/ʊ/)men. You guys are awfully ignorant honestly speaking. Pronunciation rules are alive, please learn more about it.

i find it is usually non-native english speakers/teachers who get hung up on such issues. i think in HK a lot them just believe there is always one correct answer because it's easier than having gray areas.

FYI: USA CDC does not recommend using face shields or goggles as a substitute for masks. Face shields and goggles are primarily used to protect the eyes of the person wearing it. Goggles do not cover the nose and mouth. Face shields have large gaps below and alongside the face, where your respiratory droplets may escape and reach others around you. Stay safe!

Plenty of these words vary heavily depending on accent, there's already vast amounts of different accents in the UK alone, not to mention international English accents - according to your standards, plenty of native english speaker's in the UK alone would "fail" to speak "basic english". Despite being an English native and speaking the language fluently my entire life, I probably would've "failed" half of these as well. It's no surprise that the older gentlemen chose to walk away after that ridiculousness, I pronounce women the same way he does. As someone learning foreign languages, I can only imagine what this video did to some of those people's confidence in speaking english who in reality, spoke just fine - but you acted like they were from a different planet for it. You point out how "Even native speakers make mistakes when they talk" which is most definitely true, but is misleading here where native english accents play such a pivotal role. You're giving English learner's a skewed view of reality, and then following up this misleading narrative with advertising your affiliate so that they can "polish their pronunciation", whether that's purposeful or not I don't know, but it does seem detrimental to the learners in my opinion. The people involved in this video were also exposed to unnecessary risk due to the improper use of face shields, the moving the mic to and from different people's faces, and just the risk of the close contact involved in this video at all.

It also screwed up because many of the educated degree holders went to American universities instead of British ones as well. Back in the days. This is ironic, since the financial sector is based on British rules and regulations and laws. So it should follow British rules... and not American ones. I sometimes think to myself whether we have had so many financial crashes in HK and in Asia, IS because people did not communicated well.. or knew what was happening... or even was basically unqualified ? Brits pronounce tomato as "toh mah to", and Americans pronounce it as "toh may to". Meanwhile Singaporeans pronounce it as "to meh to".

That is because, in chinese culture, we just want to "teach" a child, so that they can do something for society. Whereas over the years, in Europe. People teaches something in order to group their loyal citizens, and separate them. In China today, teaching a different dialect, and format, will group the people differently as well. But I think many people realises this now in China. Cos the reality is, NOBODY can be the same inside of China. So therefore, some chinese, overseas or inside the mainland, do not know which way to go. When English is taught, it taught as a "I want you to learn these words, and say these things, and in the future, you will write these things in a bank, in an academic settings and more"... But in reality, they may speak like a child back home. Or something. In the UK, the eduation system is kind of fair, they separate the different areas into different subjects and filter out the junk info, in case you confuse it with another job, or another area. In this video, it shows that, the maker of the video, do not understand what is "standard"... And why "standard" has to exist. Standard can only exist, if two parties are wanted and desired to trade, to share the same goal, to achieve the same objectives. There is no point to learn something, just to be different. Torre's English does has a kind of rhythm to it, but his pronunciation also is not English. I will say that he didn't go to an English school in the UK. For certain he didn't. His school is not in SE Asia, I'm sure of that.

I think everyone pronounces “candidate” correctly. It is just a distinction between British English and American English. Most Americans say can-di-date whereas British say can-di-did

Thanks for doing the street survey, Torres, Georgia. The first one with "-date" should be right in the two spoken versions. They are separately RP vs POSH or UK vs American.

It’s so ironic that Georgia believed in the “teacher” from Bristol but not the old man, who is from England as well. Nice logic and choice of source :)

@@hyukleberry5567 You didn't get my point. The correct pronunciation for the word 'women' is [ wim-in ], no doubt about it. That British man was a douche. His ego apparently grew too big and prevented him from admitting his mistake, just like you mentioned it. However, when I said 'No' in my previous comment, I meant the woman who made(or co-made) this video did not have to check with another English person because she already knew the answer. She was just being nasty like a three yo yelling at the crowd trying to make a smart@ss about herself --- 'look everyone, that British dude was wrong and I am right!'. ...*puke*

the Polish girl at the beginning of your video actually said 'zaczynamy'. it refers more to the present 'we are starting (now). and 'zacznijmy' it is more like 'let's start it' (in the future). but it is nice to hear some familiar languages haha!

i thought "candidate" can be pronounced two ways: can-di-'deit' & can-di-'duht'

But because HK was part of the BRITISH governance... Shouldn't it sound more like British English ? Or English English ? The way that the girl handled that gentleman's word on women... was extremely rude. Cos in the UK, the sounds are heavier. And he IS speaking about the old English... Plurals and so forth. She should have listened ! No wonder so many media keep saying that, the youngsters do not listen. She did not listen. Older generation like him, was taught ALL of the old grammar rules... Learning from these online lesson sometimes, do miss a lot of the old rules, and styles as well. I used to not believe why anyone with an English degree can get into banking. Now I do. They can at least produce a proper document. This is extremely terrible.... How can you sell any products, when your standard is not even quite there ? And mis-translation can happen ?

Videos like this always come off as a bit insulting. People pronounce words differently all over the world due to accent, dialects and regional differences in their speech. Especially when they put a trick question in at the end. Desert has two pronunciations, like bass. Both should have been accepted. Learning a language should be fun and none of these people "failed" at English. They just have their own way of speaking, even if it's not the standard Cambridge.

accents differ from incorrect pronunciations. The real world allows flexibility and mistakes as long as it can communicate and be understood, but there is no "own way of speaking" when it comes to speaking a language properly and correctly.

@@christinacheong8767 In reality, there are almost 40 different dialects in the UK that sound different from each other, and in many cases use different spellings and word structures. In fact, there's pretty much one accent per county.

As a native Chinese speaker, among all the words, I feel "candidate" is the most difficult one.. Although I know the correct pronunciation, I still pronounce with the "date" sound at the back most of the time especially when speaking fast..

Don't lose sleep over it, I lived here for over 40 years and native people here still pronounce the words just like most on the video.... over thinking makes it worse for you. Being confident more important than trying to get it perfect.

I don’t think it is important how you pronounce it. Americans pronounce it with the “date”. You say it either way. It is just a word, torris is being picky about it. It won’t be a problem as long as ppl can understand you. Just say wtever lol.

With some of the English words, sometimes, the stretch point is in a different location. So when some people speak the date way... It is more like this .."can-dee-daaate". The stretch point is on the A. But the English way is more like a quick and sharp pronunciation without any stretch anywhere. "can-di-dat". You can say the "tsa" sound for the T, but no e. So, with the added e, you have to stretch the A sound. i.e. "daaate". You will find this stretch sound of the A quite often in words. This is how you will sound different to a listener.

The pronunciation of "desert" actually depends on how you're using the word. It could mean "place with little precipitation," "abandon," or "that which one deserves." The video specified the noun form, but the philosophical term is also a noun.

We say can-di-DATE in the US

Torres, if this game is based on the pronunciation in the Cambridge dictionary, then I think your opening question should be "Can Hong Kong people say the basic words in British English ". I mean, to be honest, take the word "candidate" from your game as an example, both candi-date and candi-did are acceptable...still, not trolling here and love your show.

They are not. There are multiple pronunciations for these words. They chose to use what they are familiar with and only choosing one dictionary when many others are available and disagree with it. If they wanted good words, they would choose ones with very little variation.

How do you pronounce it? In the US it’s loun-ge. But some ppl also pronounce it lawn-ge.

Desert has two pronunciations depending on what you refer to, which is the verb - desert (dɪˈzəːt) that means to leave someone and noun desert (ˈdɛzət) = the arid land with no vegetation. So, the native Australian was correct in a way... but you need to clarify the meaning...

Should give huge credits to those who did the interview cuz probably they could have earned more than 500 using those time lol

I lived in the US before, heard only "can-di-dait" most of the time, it is not wrong pronunciation. The word cupboard is tricky and many people mispronounce it.

So surprised to see a lot of people doesn’t like this video, come on, it’s English, there’s reason for you to called it English, don’t butthurt when someone just tried to correct you

The thing is, being in HK, so many people speak American English already. Because of the many American banks in HK.... This is also why so many classes, and various other educational materials never followed British materials. Which it should, because it was a British overseas' state before.

@@MeiinUK Correct. With the world being so globalized, there really isn't a reason to be stickling about which origin of English is the "correct" one. Language itself is morphing constantly with time. We should just embrace the variety and focus on understanding one another.

zaczynamy (in Polish) literally means let’s start, and it’s the inflected form (first person plural) of zaczynać, which is the imperfect (niedokonany) form of the perfect counterpart (perfectum/dk.) zacząć. It’s interesting to hear several English variants that are still widely accepted among anglophone speakers.

Well, "literally" it just means "we are starting" or "we start." In context though, it makes sense to translate it as "let's start." However, I would say "zaczynajmy" is a more direct translation of "let's start," as it is in the imperative mode, and thus has that "let's" attitude.
