    Summary steps: 1.- Learn phrases. 2.- Learn Intonation (generally it is always the same). 3.- Start using the patterns that native English speakers use. 4.- Learn their pronunciation (use native vowel). 5.- You have to focus on a specific kind of English from a specific region.

    I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I get nervous, my English gets worse. I start to stutter and words don’t come out right. Especially when someone knows I’m not a native, and I feel like they’re waiting for me to screw up. I also don’t understand how some people tell me that I have a slight accent and others say I have a thick accent. I’m a nurse and meet many new people each day, and some tell me one thing and others tell another. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just want to blend in, and not stick out like a sore thumb. In my opinion, my English is pretty damn good since I’ve been studying it since about first grade. Thanks for this video!

    If you're not from America, I am not sure how important it is to sound like a native speaker. If I hear someone has an accent, I am not going to expect him or her to speak perfect English. It forces me to listen more closely to fully understand what that person is saying to me. Perhaps if you plan on living in the US permanently, learning to speak like a native - could be a helpful. But honestly, it could work against you as well. If you sound like a native, but you're not still totally fluent in English, it may make you sound less intelligent. But, by having an accent, we don't expect you to speak perfectly.

  • @pcoll100

    @pcoll100

    The reality is it is almost impossible for a foreigner to have a perfect an American accent. As she says, we have many different dialects. I know foreigners who have lived in the United States for a long time, but I still a detect some accent. Perhaps it is possible, but I can't think of any situation in my life where I've met a non native English (American) speaker and been fooled - if they came over to America as an adult. If someone came over as child, then it's different, but that's not what we're talking about.

  • @pcoll100

    Any by foreigner, I'm referring to non native English speakers (not all foreigners). I am from Chicago, but can do accents for all areas of America. I can also do accents for Australia, Canada, Ireland, England and Scotland - just not quite as well. If a non native English speaker foreigner, could come to America as an adult and perfect an American accent, I would be blown away. It's hard enough for people from other English speaking countries to do so!

    Hi, my favorite English teacher! I think I need to tell you this: When I started working as a security agent for an american airline in my country, I used to help the passengers to print the boarding passes and the bag tags. I was studying English and working at the same time... The passengers that came to me and asked me for help, they used to say: hey, your English is good! Why you said "I speak only a little"? And I discovered that everything is about to practice the pronunciation and encourage ourselves to speak with native speakers. I think Im not perfect when speaking or even writing, but I learned a lot with the passengers...

    My experience with learning English turned out to be quite different from what I had imagined. For many years i surrounded myself with English and did everything i could in English to the point where I started to think in it and I could speak it to an (almost) native level. I always thought it would be "cool" if i ever traveled to the US, that I'd surprise people with my amazing English. However, when i actually moved to the US i found out that it was kind of pointless, because as long as you could communicate, it didn't really matter to the natives if you had an accent or if you sounded native-like. In fact i noticed that native speakers preferred foreign accents because they thought they were "cute" or "interesting" or "different".

  • @AysarAburrub

    @Dana Shehab ... well lets see, i took English in school for 8 years, which helped me become familiar with the structure and grammar of English, but i could never speak, or understand spoken English. I only was able to do that much later on during my college years, that's when my English started to really kick in, which is around the time when KZread became popular. In fact it's KZread that helped me immerse myself in English. I used to watch tons of videos with lots of dialogue, like interviews and vlogs, where the content is authentic and real so i could relate to it. The cool thing about vlogs as compared to movies for example is that vlogs are clear and easy to follow, you just focus on the topic without being distracted by cinematic music, or action or explosions. Also, the language people use is their daily speech, normal simple English without much jargon or academic stuff. If i wanted to learn some more academic vocabulary, that's when reading comes into play. I loved reading about all kinds of stuff, from history, to biology, to linguistics, to politics etc. I also watched tons of interesting documentaries. All of this helped internalize English in my brain. It became a part of me, and i started to think in it. I stopped "mental translating" from my native language, and i started speaking as if I was a native speaker. It was an unconscious natural effect of being immersed in the language, just like how kids learn their native languages. It just started happening automatically, i didn't force it at all. Of course i still had an accent whenever i spoke, and i didn't like it because it didn't match my level of fluency, so i decided to consciously work on improving it. By this time I already understood spoken English very well, and i knew in my head how Americans pronounce almost every word, so all i had to do is consciously force myself to mimic their speech patterns whenever i spoke. It wasn't easy, and it felt awkward many times, but little by little it became easier, and words started to flow more and more naturally until i (almost) perfected it. Long story short, you basically have to use English A LOT, and by "use" i dont necessarily mean "speak". Just immerse yourself in it, do everything you enjoy in English, whether its movies, music, video games, watching tutorials on how to cook, or anything else as long as it's in English ... ALL ENGLISH ALL THE TIME. Eventually your brain will pick it up, and you will be surprised at how naturally it happens. Just don't stress on it too much if it feels difficult at first, and you DON'T need anyone to talk to, I personally never had anyone to talk to before I came to the US. Trust me, you need to be able to understand English before you can speak it. Speaking comes later and it happens naturally, for now just enjoy the journey. I hope this answers your question ... Good Luck

    haha, yeah, there's no point in slowing down my speech... that won't prepare you for the real world. Anyhow, don't worry about your grammar for now... just focus on using English with native speakers. That will help you build the fluency & confidence you need for everyday communication. Then you can study grammar on your own later on. Anyhow, my website is SUPER simple. The most important thing there are the free guides and signing up for my email newsletter... that way you can get lots of tips to improve your English and learn about the special courses I offer. :D

    Really great suggestions. Btw, I think listening a lot to the language you are learning is the most and the first important way of sounding more like a native speaker of that language. Once you are familiar with how the language sounds like, you'll be able to notice your mistakes and successes in pronouncing the words when speaking. Listen a lot, then speak a lot, even if you are only speaking to yourself in front of a mirror (that's kinda sad, but will do the trick to certain point regardless).

    I love you, I just found your channel and it gives me hope, I was so impressed when I watched your video speaking Spanish. I was doing the dishes and I had to stop, clean and dry my hands and watch you hypnotized, you sound equally beautiful in English as in Spanish. I've been into English for 7 years and studying really serious (self-taught) for 3 years. I get to that point where I can have a conversation with no problem, except when I find people with a very strong accent or a really difficult dialect to understand. I moved to the States 4 months ago and people were already telling me when I got here that I spoke very well, and I was fully blinded by those comments. Thing is I know I still have trouble when I'm talking and I need to use words I don't know in English or I'm reading and I get to words I don't know how to pronounce. I recorded my voice and heard me (something I never did before), and I was shocked to find out (I'm exaggerating) I sound like Gloria of Modern Family or Abuelita Lydia of One Day At A Time. I found that around 2 months ago, since that it has been my commitment, to speak the most I can like a native speaker or I will get back to my country by swimming. Your tips are really useful. I took notes and I will keep them as a valuable booty. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Johan from Florida.
