Č is pronounced as in "Check" or "Change", and the softer pronouncement letter Ć doesn't have equivalent sound in English Dž is pronounced like "Job", and the softer pronouncement Đ doesn't really have English equivalent same as with Ć LJ is pronounced in word "Bolshevik" NJ is pronounced in word "New" (New York)

Note that Nj is only the N part of New York. Also I'm pretty sure Bolshevik is pronounced Bolševik in English

@@hugo57k91 Č sounds like the "ch" in church, Ć can be pronounced like "itch" without the it. Dž is like the "j" in judge and Đ has the "g" sound as in George. But the letter G will always sound like the "g" in goat.
I can finally learn Bosnian and talk to most of my family! Thank you very much!!

Why would it be really really hard? I don't think it is about luck, you won't need it. But practice makes perfect, you know.
Any Bosnian speakers here that could help me? I’m 100% ethnically Bosnian but both of my parents passed away before I could learn any and I was adopted and grew up in Sweden. I really, really want to learn Bosnian and visit the beautiful country that is my true homeland but I’m having immense trouble to find any help. There’s very little information on the Bosnian language, I could really find joke videos or pronunciation ones like this. So I’d really, really appreciate some help and guidance.

You can take a class in Serbo-Croatian language and learn "Bosnian" which, from a linguistic POV (as opposed to a political one) is just a subset of middle dialects in the full dialect range in the Serbo-Croat language. As for visiting, any travel agency can help. However, you could see if Bosnia has developed any programs for foreigners who wish to come tp Bosnia to learn the language. Keep in mind, it remains a poorer country with less robust of an educational infrastructure. There could also be special government visas or programs for children of Bosnian heritage who wish to "return" to Bosnia. Again, keep in mind that Bosnia still struggles in some ways to govern itself when making any decision to participate in such a program.

A little tip for everyone learning! In Bosnia we don’t really care if you say Č or Ć;Dž or Đ because we don’t really make a difference in that whilst speaking or reading it’s all the same to us AHAHAHAH also if you use the wrong Č/Ć or the wrong Dž/Đ it can change the meaning of a word but it’s not that common so don’t let that scare you! Also us Bosnians tend to make up words while talking so yeah we don’t say “Udarit ću te” -I will hit you,we often make up words for example “Zviznut ću te/Odalamit ću te...” and it means the same thing but it’s SO SO SO informal!

Hi, great lesson! However, your pronunciation of apple was incorrect. The A in apple is the same sound as the A in the word cat. The Bosnian A sounds like the A in the word "alarm" or the "O" in "often."
@HowtospeakBosnian
4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. thank you for your comment. "A" sounds like an "A" in ART. Maybe, different English accents play a role here. The safest bet is to pronounce it as "A" in ART, ALARM, ABSTRACT, ABOUT ETC.

@@HowtospeakBosnian sorry but the a pronunciation in 'abstract' is not the same as Bosnian A because it's actually the same as the a in 'apple'. And for the word 'about', the A sound you meant comes from the letter ou , not the the first letter a. But thank you for the video.

@@dinls Hello there, LJ is a phonemic sound which means that you need to pronounce both sounds (L + J) to make LJ. Try saying them together fast. Then place your tongue to the palate of your mouth and say the sound L and J together and hold it. This will create LJ sound. Sorry for the late response but I hope this helps a little bit at least...

I don't hear the difference between Ch and Ch. The Č and Ć. Also the Dž and Đ.
@HowtospeakBosnian
5 жыл бұрын
In Bosnian, č is referred to as tvrdo č (hard č), while ć is a meko ć (soft ć). The main difference between them is how hard the sound is pronounced. Č sounds like ch in “charm” or “match”. There’s no exact English equivalent to ć, but the closest would be the sound of t in British English “tune” (pronounced ty) The distinction is pretty much the same between tvrdo dž and meko đ: dž is pronounced like j in “joy”, only slightly harder Again there’s no exact English counterpart to đ. It is similar to d in British English “duke” or American English “schedule” (pronounced dy) To produce the “soft” sounds (ć, đ) your tongue should be placed right behind your front teeth To produce the “hard” sounds (č, dž) your tongue should be further back along the palette Hope this helps. :)
It is not completely true that each letter represents the sound. Such is the case with Dž, Lj, Nj. It would be correct if it was written in Cyrillic.
@HowtospeakBosnian
4 жыл бұрын
Those are compound letters/sounds NJ for example is treated as one sound and are therefore having a space in the alphabet as a separate sounds.
