Thank you Mrs. Rachel you've helped me understand many of movies and TV shows but understanding African-Americans are still really hard for me they speak in a way that I can't realize

Awesome video. That's exactly how I taught English about 25 years ago-except you're going into much more detail, Rachel. Another very interesting feature is the protagonists' body language: Nonverbal behavior like body movements and posture, facial expressions, eye contact, hand/arm/shoulder gestures, and tone of voice all contribute significantly to how they both communicate. Learners of (North) American English should also assimilate this in a US or Canadian environment.

A little of it. It was hard to me. There are other series more easy to catch the sounds like Friends. But it's necesary all kind of tv shows. Rachel you're a great English teacher, your help is invaluable. One question. How can native English speakers understand each other when accent is so strong? For example Australian or Jamaican accent. Ohhh Thank you for you now i realise that context is important to understand English contrast between stress and unstressed words.

Thank you, I'm glad you're finding the videos helpful! As for understanding English dialects, it can take some practice, even for native speakers. If we hear a dialect we are unfamiliar with, it can take our ears some time to catch onto the different vowel sounds, intonation patterns, and vocabulary/idioms of the new dialect.

Hi, Rachel! I have a pronunciation question that's annoying me. According to dictionaries, the "th" in the word "with" is pronounced as ð. However, I found these two examples (and more than two) where speakers pronounced it as θ instead of ð. There are they: 1- The big bang theory season 2 episode 21 timestamp: 15:41: "I really don't wanna have this conversation wiTH (θ) you". 2- The big bang theory season 2 episode 10 timestamp: 11:59: "You wanna come wiTH (θ)?" Is there any explanation for this? Is it ð or θ?! Thank you so much❤❤❤

Hi Baloza! WITH is a unique word, because the TH can be pronounced both ways! Sometimes speakers will match the TH (voiced or unvoiced) with the sound after it (voiced before voiced, unvoiced before unvoiced), but not always.

This doesn't have much to do with this particular episode, but I'm shocked that not pronouncing the h in when, where, whale, white. My maiden name is White and I have always pronounced it with the h being sounded! When did this become a thing to drop the h sound.

Hi @itsthevk! It's very common in American English to drop the H in WH words. Interestingly, we sometimes alternatively drop the W and keep the H, such as in "who" and "whose".

Hi @a-note76! Yes, once the brain isn't focusing on understanding the meaning, it's easier to relax and focus on how the words are pronounced. It's great to use transcripts in your practice, since it helps you to develop your ear training skills.
