Part 1 - Burial Style Drums and Bass

This is Part 1 of how to, sort of, make music like Burial (I emphasize "sort of" because we are using Ableton which follows a grid system, and he by all accounts used Sound Forge, which didn't!).

Wow. This is by far the most accurate Burial evocation I've ever heard, that's remarkable. Absolutely nailed it.

also check out Brendan Park's take on burial's tunes. Amazing.
dude, this is the first video I ever found on actually building up Burial-like sounds, and not just taking a fucking prepared in advance sample pack to tell about the swing for 15 minutes. Greatly appreciate it, cool sound design tutorial!
Def the most faithful recreation I've seen so far, stoked for part 2!
The tempo automation REALLY got me
Really excited for this series!
This is one of the greatest Live tutorials I've ever watched. It not just shows how, it shows a good workflow. And the music is pretty damn good too.
dude you nailed it AF
You're already my favorite production channel, this is so good

dude you are awesome
Great work. It is always amazing to go back and think he did this in Forge. That was what, 12 years ago or so? All those tools like Forge, Wavelab etc... while they must have been a nightmare to actually mix, did offered him a focus for total sample manipulation and destruction. The way vocal samples are modded, that is almost impossible to do via conventional sample editing in DAW. Actually it is, but it is hard to THINK the way he did, as he quite often did so many steps. Yes he would use pitch, stretch, resample, formant etc, which are all conventional tools in any sample editor nowdays, but the different workflow he applied (and his talent and specific vision) led to results we love.
Nice!!
dope stuff!!! Thanks
Amazing.
That tempo trick on the master is so tasteful *chef's kiss*

Hollow ground is the goat undisputed
well done
Great stuff. Imagine Burial creating this stuff in SOUNDFORGE, which is not even a DAW, it's an audio editor, which meant he'd have to lay out the entire of one layer, then destructively render it and start adding the next layer - no going back, no tweaking the mix, no GRID even, ripping those metal gear solid gun clip samples off his PS3... just building and layering by ear. Crazy! Apparently one of his ways of judging when a track was nearly done was the audio file in soundforge would start to look like a fishbone.
1:12 - Kick 2:12 - Low Rim 3:00 - Mid Rim 4:02 - Hi Rim 4:50 - Hats 5:50 - Knife Sharpening 6:31 - Guns & Ammo
REALLY good. Maybe a little too fast but nothing a few rewinds cant solve. Thank you.
Great depth as always. Will check out your album now too! Also - would love to see some more Bonobo stuff in the future, the Ibrik one you made was great. Cheers man.

These videos are awesome man. I don’t know if this is in your wheelhouse, but I wanted to request if you could make a video on Bjork. I feel like you would knock it out of the park!

Intriguing! Any particular track? Baring in mind, there is a massive log jam queue of requests I will be working through, so it's gotta get to the back of it for a while!!lol! Saying that, I would advise getting in touch at hollowgroundproductions1987@gmail.com to organise a personal tutorial, and I can create a Bjork masterclass video or two if you're into the idea?

Thanks man. Ever considered making som Massive Attack - Mezzanine era production videos?
Great tutorial, you could've even stretched it out a little bit more and explain more of the details e.g. sample finding. Skee mask would also be a great tutorial if you find time! :)
The album slaps by the way
nailed the tutorial! im just a bit confused why my eq eight doesnt show any waveform when i click edit to roll off the stereo on the foley kick? i havent used the m/s mode before so i may be bit of a dummy. (if it makes any difference, im currently using a neutron eq for the kick because i dont have fabfilter)

The sound changed so drastically from 1:55 to 2:00 min. What did you change there? Attack is way different. Also the notes are shorter but still play out. Any chance to get the kick sample?

Glad you mentioned this first looool. Great tut, lo fi thru and thru I guess.
Not claiming to be any kind of audio engineer, but I think the kicks need to be shortened, and the sub frequencies on them don't need to be boosted quite as much. I noticed that a lot of the kicks on Untrue feel less punchy in the low low end and that they tend to sit in a slightly higher frequency range, so that seems to be partially in the EQ and partially in the length of the actual samples. What I like about the bass in songs from Untrue (I don't tend to listen to his other stuff much, fake fan I guess) is that it really breathes in the mix and that Burial's unorthodox kicks don't cloud up the low end. From the standpoint of trying to make bangers, it's all technically awful mixing, but that really suits the lo-fi, melancholy atmosphere of Burial in my opinion. Also, none of the drums feel super saturated in any Burial songs that I can think of, and I think that that deadness and emptiness in the mix is an important piece. Listening on headphones, I feel like I could lose the drums if I'm not careful, and I like that they can melt into the textures of each song and don't really demand attention. I think in some cases, reverb that's either added to certain samples or already present in them can determine the presence of that sample, and sometimes the presence is determined by the resonance or sample length. Might also help to use a shorter reverb or just cut the reverb on a sample shorter too, but I think a bleak and relatively empty drum mix allows for the vocal samples, instrumental samples (pad synth, piano) and bass to shine in a unique way. It's definitely a challenge to figure out how to bring the Burial sound into the present, where most listeners demand a certain type of audio quality, but hopefully these observations are helpful. EDIT: There are some kicks that are a little subbier on Untrue, but most of the kick-like sounds in those grooves don't have that sub frequency at all, just the kick that hits on the first beat of the loop, or in a simple off beat 2-step pattern for example. Hope that's not too contrary to what I said above. EDIT2: Panning out beefier kick sounds and maybe messing with stereo width could also help ------------- I don't mean any of this as an insult to you, and I appreciate that you're making these videos and sharing your knowledge with other producers. I thought your Aphex video was great, and I definitely got some cool results out of Ableton after watching it.

You cannot side-chain in Soundforge so mentally B would lowpass everything necessary so the mix wont sound muddy. This guy wouldnt do that, its a major nuance BUT from a unique point of view he did mention not to "coppy" himmmmm I use that term loosely lol but I personally love this "burialesque" sub genre along with the percs!
Am I the only person playing this back at 0.75 speed and replaying things over & over to see what's happening and actually trying to follow it? It sounds great, but there's some pretty big leaps that just go unexplained, it's pretty frustrating.

Late reply but... Did you ever figure some of this out? I am having the same problem. I feel like I followed everything for the most part, but something just seems off still.
Dude your mic is EAR SPLITTING LOUD. I didn’t make through 30 seconds of this 🤦🏻♂️
Tech boys imitating Burial is the least Burial thing you can do.
This "upcoming " video thing is annoying. My feed is cluttered with videos I can't watch. Screw the Algorithm - please stop.
