How to Solve Multi-Step Equations
This is 4 of 4 videos I custom made for an educator in California for an experimental 1-week video homework program. I have only performed minor editing (so a few comments I make in videos may be out of context). Although not designed for the general public, I figured you may find them useful.
This video provides a quick lesson on how to solve multi-step linear equations.

I'm so happy I found this video! I'm in algebra 1 in the 8th grade! I have a test tomorrow about this lesson. So happy! _I just want to clarify that yes, I am learning this in 8th grade. Although I don't know how you guys learned this in 5th grade, but from where I am, they have a pretty bad academic curriculum especially when there are children that excell in this. And I am pretty upset that my school isn't challenging their students enough and some teachers suck. But don't ask why I'm here when I said in my comment that I had a test on this._

Not at all. Especially when your solution is dealing with a possible negative answer. I still get them wrong. But dealing with inequalities aren't too bad. You just gotta know what you're doing, do it slowly, and make sure to check your answer. That will help you a whole lotta.
Thank you for making the videos. They have helped me a lot. I'm trying to join the Navy to become a SEAL and I didn't know anything about solving equations and started to lose hope. I got motivated to learn everything I needed to know and I stumbled upon your videos. I now have the knowledge to pass and ace the ASVAB. THANK YOU so much for the help.

Hello Mr. Luis, your videos were very helpful. There is one thing though. I noticed that when you did each problem they ended with a whole number. The problem I'm working on actually ended in a constant times a variable in parentheses. This one: d-12 = 4 (d-6). Do you know any tricks that would specifically help me with these. Thank you.
@VideoMathTutor
9 жыл бұрын
No tricks needed. Just distribute the 4 to the d and -6, then proceed like in video. I cover these problems in more detail in my "Solving Linear Equations" lessons.

Well, what if there aren't any like terms like 4*y + 2*x = 58. How would I solve that?
@VideoMathTutor
8 жыл бұрын
+NoSecretsJustMemes It depends on what your teacher wants. You may solve for x or for y. Depending on what's asked for, solve by isolating the variable using the steps I demonstrate in video. If you need more help, I can do private webcam math tutoring with you, but I do charge for that. Visit: cam.vmt.cc for details.

For 5c + 3 ( c + 4 ) = 36 why did you times positive 3 and 4 instead of adding?
@VideoMathTutor
8 жыл бұрын
Great question! When a number (or variable) is next to a parenthesis, this mean multiplication. So I am applying the distributive property to multiply 3 times c and then 3 times 4. The plus sign will separate the two results. I do more of this in my Basic Math lessons, so I hope you check those out too.
I was a bit confused regarding the 5c+3(c+4)=36 equation. When distributing, I found that I would get 5c^2+3c+12=36. I don't mean to point out a mistake/sound rude, but I was a bit confused when distributing the 5c with the c, wouldn't it be 5c squared? 5c^2 (That's how you type it if I'm not mistaken.)
@VideoMathTutor
9 жыл бұрын
Hitlermeme Xdd First, you are not being rude by trying to point out an error on my part. We all make mistakes, and I would welcome anyone letting me know if I made a mistake (which has happened a few times in the past). In this case, only the 3 gets distributed, not the 5c, so it would not be 5c^2 (this is because of the Order of Operations, the 3 is being multiplied, so it happens before the addition of the 5c. I hope this helps!
You da real mvp
What if you dont have like terms like 22=2x-2+8?
@VideoMathTutor
9 жыл бұрын
Constant terms are considered like terms, so you would try to get them together, then isolate (get it by itself) the x on one side of the equation. My "Algebra: Slving Linear Equations - Part 1" video goes into MUCH more detail on how to do all this.
@VideoMathTutor

im really confused with a problem do you mind helping me out the problem is: 15 - (3-4y) = 2(y + 2) im not asking you to do it im asking for help on how to do it
@VideoMathTutor
7 жыл бұрын
A hint for starters: I recommend you first distribute the "negative 1" (subtraction) that is next to the 15 and distribute the 2 to the left of the y. See if you can finish it after this. If not, let me know.
