Algebra: Solving Linear Equations - Part 1: The Basics

[NOTE: This video is only the first 18 minutes of the full lesson, please visit my website to purchase complete version] Lesson consists of providing you with a Self-Tutorial on how to solve linear equations. Tutor discusses what is an Equation, Solution, Solution Set, Equivalent Equations, Identity, Contradictions, Conditional Equations, Linear Equations, the Standard Form of a Linear Equation. I show you how to actually SOLVE linear equations going step-by-step. I don't skip steps. I review some of the properties of Equality here too. I remind you to check the work done and how to solve linear equations using a calculator. At the end, you will know how to easily solve equations that look like:
2[y - (4y - 1)] = 5 - 9y
No word problems are done here. This is shown in DETAIL in Part 2 of the Lesson.

Dear videomathtutor, I probably should have read the description before watching the video and wasting my time by taking notes. But like most people I searched for linear algebra and your video came up; I selected it and watched it. Thats the entire dynamic to watching KZread videos. No one reads the description first and anyone who says they do is just lying to make a point. Also I'd I wanted to pay for a math lesson I would be sitting behind a desk in college and not browsing KZread.

@benilable Try putting the -2 within parentheses, THEN square it (raise to 2nd power). You don't add -1 to this result, but another -2 [You are replacing all x's with the solution value of -2]: (-2)^2 + (-2) = 4 - 2 = 2. The {-2, 1} are two separate solutions to this. (It is 1, NOT -1). Watch video again to see. To actually FIND the solutions to a quadratic equation will be done in a future lesson.

@Ktayr Most algebra problems are not that obvious or simple. If you want to guess with something that easy, go ahead, but do realize most teachers want you to "show work" for homework or test question so using algebraic steps to solve the problem will do the trick.

Well, let's check! Substitute -2 in place of x. I recommend you use parentheses for this: (-2)^2 + (-2) = 2 becomes (-2)(-2) - 2 = 2 which simplifies to 4 - 2 = 2 and that is just 2 = 2. It checks! It is a solution, but thanks for pointing out what you thought was an error. I value the input of students. I will cover solving quadratic equations in a future lesson.
