How to Slip Stitches Knitwise & Purlwise | Beginner Knitting Tutorial | Through Backs of Loops

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This tutorial goes through the simple variations of slipping stitches in knitting.
I teach how to slip stitches knitwise and purlwise first, as these are the most common instructions, and then I show you how to slip knitwise and purlwise with the yarn in front (wyif), with the yarn in back (wyib), and through the backs of loops (tbl).
These are less common but are easy to learn so I thought I'd throw them into this lesson too :)
Slipping knitwise: 0:35
Slipping purlwise: 1:30
Slipping knitwise with yarn in front: 2:00
Slipping purlwise with yarn in back: 2:30
Slipping knitwise through the back of the loop: 2:53
Slipping purlwise through the back of the loop: 3:14
I forgot to mention in the video, but if your pattern doesn't tell you what kind of slip stitch to use, the default method is to slip the stitch purlwise...except if it's a decrease and then you should slip the stitch knitwise. This isn't the law though, and it's down to personal preference really.
Just make sure that whatever slip stitch you choose to use in the pattern, stick with it throughout. Consistency is good!
Hope that's helpful, and thank-you for watching :)

Thank you for giving the detailed explanation and names - purlwise, knitwise, etc. Since this is the name we'll come across in a pattern.

Thank you! I have been looking everywhere for slip ktbl and slip ptbl. The good news is I was doing it right except for not having my yarn in front on the slip ptbl. Thank you for a great video and especially for the time markings so that I could go directly to what I needed.

I’m knitting a blanket and the first of every row is a slip one pearl. I messed up a few rows back. Am I able to correct the stitch without taking out all my work?

I hate it when that happens! I'm afraid mistakes at the beginning of a row are particularly annoying to fix, but I would recommend looking up a video on how to knit lifelines (reactive ones, not proactive). I unfortunately don't have a video on that myself but hopefully you'll find the help you need :)

If they ask to do sl ywif twice 1p how do I do that

  • @RokoleeDIY

Hi! I assume that is "slip a stitch with the yarn in front, then 1 purl stitch" :) The type of slip stitch you would do depends on the stitch type before and after it.
