In this video, I’ll show you how to cast on knitting like a pro! This is the thumb method cast on. If you have no idea what that means - no worries! Just know that it’s an easy and super useful cast on that both beginners and old hands use all the time.
So, you’ve got needles and a ball of yarn. Cool! Now you want to knit something. But how do you get the yarn onto your needles?
Say hello to the cast on!
Casting on is a way to turn loose yarn into neat stitches that can be knit. It’s the first step in knitting. All you need is some yarn and needles.
What needles and yarn should you use?
I always recommend a chunky yarn and correspondingly thick needles for beginners because they’re much easier to grip. In this tutorial, I’m using Lion Brand’s Hometown USA and 8mm bamboo needles.
You’ll find tutorials and guides for making a Slipknot, Cast On, Knit Stitch and Cast Off. These techniques form a sturdy foundation in knitting.

For years now, I have been recommending your cast-on videos to people who are trying to learn how to knit! This one and the long-tail cast-on one were what finally got things to click for me after many failed attempts. You have a real gift for making something confusing into something that is easy to understand!

I had been winding the wrong length of yarn around my thumb the entire time! 🤣🤣🤣 Other than that it was perfect haha. This worked so well, I learned how to cast on in however long the video was, my grandmother would always do it for me before!
I haven’t picked up knitting needles in about 11 years, and I only had one project going (never finished it 😂). It was super fun and calming! But life got in the way of things, as it does. Thanks for watching!! 🤗
Thanks for the tutorial! I repeated the steps and a couple of munites later somehow did it one handed, and then realised - that’s what my grandma tried to teach me a number of times and failed because we both didn’t have the patience! But you made it so easy, I am truly grateful.
Thanks alot for a fantastic video 🥰 After all these years of knitting finally I learned casting on properly 😉👍
This was the only tutorial where I not only got the first few loops actually cast but was able to do it myself easily after watching you cast twice. I’m so excited to start this new journey. Thank you for taking me the first few steps
Finally....thank you for your easiest cast on tutorial👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Divina, I have used this so many times. You are THE BEST!!!!
I’ve known how to knit for awhile and I always had to my grandma cast one for me. Every tutorial didn’t show every step in full detail and now i know how to do it independently this helps so much. And reminder if your a beginner you can do this!
