It's not simple to say That most days I don't recognize me That these shoes and this apron That place and its patrons Have taken more than I gave them It's not easy to know I'm not anything like I used be, although it's true I was never attention's sweet center I still remember that girl She's imperfect, but she tries She is good, but she lies She is hard on herself She is broken and won't ask for help She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine It's not what I asked for Sometimes life just slips in through a back door And carves out a person and makes you believe it's all true And now I've got you And you're not what I asked for If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back For a chance to start over and rewrite an ending or two For the girl that I knew Who'll be reckless, just enough Who'll get hurt, but who learns how to toughen up When she's bruised and gets used by a man who can't love And then she'll get stuck And be scared of the life that's inside her Growing stronger each day 'til it finally reminds her To fight just a little, to bring back the fire in her eyes That's been gone, but used to be mine Used to be mine She is messy, but she's kind She is lonely most of the time She is all of this mixed up and baked in a beautiful pie She is gone, but she used to be mine

This song is a beast. I’ve got the first verse & ending down. But I struggle with the second half of the second verse building to the climax. I’ll give your tips a try 👍🏽

I'm trained in Opera and have a degree in vocal performance which may be my issue, but I CANNOT seem to sing this entire thing in chest voice. I automatically switch to my head voice, and then after singing this a few times my throat is sore. I'm supporting as well as I can, but for some reason this just doesn't work for me. What am I doing wrong? Is this a common issue for those trained in Opera?

I have the same problems. If you hear my covers, you will hear that I run fast to my head voice, without using my chest voice. In the cover of the new song of Mulan I try to sing it in my chest voice and damn, it was so hard and I don't like it so much. I don't know what to do either. :(

This is an absolutely amazing walk-through of the song, and really helping me to make the whole delivery and phrasing less static and boring as you mentioned... Turns out with some guidance it is kind of easier to sing than I was making it. Great advice!!

I love that song and this is a fantastic analysis of how it should be performed. While I had noticed the internal monologue aspect of it (of course), I hadn't until now realized that the chorus with the "buts" is a particular type of internal monologue where the speaker is trying to qualify/rationalize some of her flaws, like an internal debate. "I'm imperfect (but I try), I'm messy (but I'm kind), etc". In that way it reminds me of Alanis Morissette's "Hand In My Pocket", very beautiful and relatable for sure.

Thank you so much for this video, it is so helpful! I have two questions. 1. Did you sing the long two 'mine's at the end of the song in chest voice? I'm having a hard time copying you for some reason. Wich leads me to the second question. Is there a way to practice these jumps or accents you make with your voice? I don't seem to be able to put this many notes behind each other.

Freya, I used to sing so well when I was in my 20's, but now I am 67 and have slight tremor in my voice. I have picked this song to work on and sing, at the Swananoa Gathering in NC in June. Can I do this with the tremor in my voice?

Why is this song so hard to sing? It doesn't go that high? Is the whole first verse mixed voice/head voice? Why is it so hard to hold that climax at A4? My voice just falls apart. I'll try your tips, Freya.

Miaplayz you could do a lot with your voice! you could embrace it as how it is, or train it to be however you want it to be. I’m sure it’s going to take a while to get to your goal, but I believe in you!

I really have a hard time understanding what is meant by changing your vocal chord tension. I just sing. Quite mediocre honestly, I don’t know what I’m doing or what my vocal chords are doing rather. I’ve been told I have natural talent. I do I guess to some point. I don’t know how to improve though because after watching videos like these, I’m just confused.
