How To Sing Like Milijenko Matijevic - Steelheart - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
As many of you know Steelheart has always been one of my favorite bands led by Miljenko Matijevic's phenomenal vocals.
Though my voice is vastly different from Miljenko, as a baritone I'm still able to get up into his high tenor range and today I'm going to show you how I do it.
As he mainly sings in the alto contralto and even soprano range, I'm able to use the same technique I teach you, which has given me the mechanics to get up into his range and sing in that registration.
I'll be sharing a version I did of "She's Gone" where I demonstrate how you can actually set your voice up to be able to sing in a whole other registration.
As I teach you how I transition seamlessly from chest to head voice, I'll also look at another example of KTVA student Kati Cher as she is able to belt from her chest register to take on "I'll Never Let You Go".
I hope you all enjoy our versions of these Steelheart tunes and that you find the tutorial helpful. Please make sure to let me know what you thought in the comments!

Wow such good info. I notice that I am getting better at overlapping head and chest although for now I really concentrate on using and growing my chest and I am! But these videos help reiterate everything and illustrate the perfection of it so thanks. What is the greatest part is when it happens to you. I mean I can do stuff just four months after starting your program (I do the workouts about 6 days a week tho) that I never would have thought possible.

I've always thought Mili is one of the most underrated singers from the 80s. I also think he is one singer who almost sounds exactly live like they do on their recordings. EVEN TODAY 30+ YEARS LATER IT'S ALMOST THE SAME LIVE! Do yourself a favor and discover Mili and Steelheart. Mili is also an excellent acapella singer!

Little correction: he wasn't in the scene in the 80s. Steelheart is an early 90s band. They were a bit late. The metal scene shrunk a lot in that decade. ...and that explains why he's "underrated".

He had an accident that kept him out of the music scene for a few years. When he recovered, grunge had taken over the music scene and Hair Metal was dead. He is still one of the greatest voices ever in music history. It's the 2020's and he is still out there singing, like he did in the 80s and 90s, which no one from that time can do.

His voice is like Slavic crystal in purity, it's like a diamond in vocal power! His voice will not be repeated in the world, he received it as a gift from the Slavic Gods. His voice is so crystal as if it were visible how the dew rolls from the pestle to the pestle, and the powerful vocals are like a hurricane!

I totally agree with Ken when he says there is hope for baritones. I've practiced singing with almost no help from outside from the beginning of the '90s. As a baritone I had a dilemma from the very beginning since it was clear I liked heavy metal and wanted to sing it, it obviously was beyond my range. Now I can sing A5 (or A5#) well and I am getting better and better all the time. Last autumn I noticed there was A-ha's Take On Me on a karaokelist of my favorite bar. Now I think I can do it in karaoke where it is not so horrible if something goes wrong. Even E5 sounds quite good. And the quality of my singing for this particular song went up in just a few days. But what I want to say is that if I had known from the beginning that it is possible to gain such improvements to one's singing I would have taken it much more seriously. If someone wants to sing it is better to train with the help of e.g. Ken cause I'm already over 50 years old now and it is quite impossible to do any career as a singer any more. Younger people have their lives ahead and crucial information should be available to them. All a singer needs is some musical ability and a lot of enthusiasm to sing. BYW another reason why I would not have aimed to have a career in music is that I'm not capable to compose music myself and I do not have absolutely no ability to produce texts for songs. Quite important abilities for a singing musician don't you think?

Definitely one of the toughest songs to sing and why you don’t hear anybody try to cover it very often. This is one in my arsenal that I pull out every once in a while to wow people. But I don’t know if it’s something that I would do on a nightly basis unless I knew where my voice was completely every night. Which I generally don’t know until halfway through the night anyways. He does nice clean high notes at the end of "Standing in the shadows". "Kiss of death" is another great performance. He's one of my favorite singers. I believe he was great in his prime between 1985-1988 on the albums Under lock and key and Back for the attack.

Very interesting analysis and tips that hardly no vocal coach talks about! The "slider" in the Steelheart song seems to be G4 - B4 - D5 - G5. I am a tenor and most comfortable is to connect into head on the 3rd note, just like you pointed out!

Great job! Great voice and Kati too😀👍🏻 Don't be too hard with Kati, because a lot of rock singers have a little bit of distortion. That makes the voice more natural and powerful. Therefore some people like analog than digital music😉 But you are a great teacher and singer😀👍🏻 Greetings from Germany 🍀

The benefit of you pointing out the chirp is that you said where she went for the upper notes. I need to hear what parts of the voice go where and you do a beautiful job of explaining it. where you point to your upper cheeks was a great visual lesson that connected for me.
